Go Stephiphany! I don't know where this 'bob's' point is, and yes it is almost a decade later, but I just feel the need to point out the obvious fact that even the original "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen, arguably one of the most famous songs of all time, also rhymes hallelujah with 'yah'. what an ass. |

Among the afflictions with which I've been marked None so pretentious, no, none quite so dark I get the feeling you're bored with me Though not through habit or frequency.. Did your mother have you easily? And if there's someplace else you'd rather be Then go, Then go. Amongst the intentions which have been sought Numbered and labelled, but none of them bought I get the feeling you're testing me You're saturated in urgency And you stick your probe in further but you're still not pleased And if there's someplace else you'd rather be Then go Then go Then go Then go. I would've lied for you I would've cried for you I crossed the line for you I would have died for you. |

Personally I see it as a bitter remark about what a difficult, unagreeable, unchangeable person this is who the song is aimed at, perhaps also a call at their cowardice. "Did your mother have you easily" Was it a difficult birth because they wouldn't let themselves be positioned correctly as a babe (or be objective or considerate in their judgments), did they not want the effort of being born (or maintaining a relationship) and (from the female vocalist point of view) were they generally an unappreciative ever-taking never-giving bastard to the females in their life. I adore this line, and all its subjectivity & obscurity. It adds to what could be entirely a despaired lament a powerful and subtle touch of anger at being thus mistreated. |

| This is one of my favourites, and I'm still not sure why. it's a great song on it's own, but something inside it makes me shiver every time i hear it. Ben Gibbard, you are my god | |

These are my favourite lyrics of the song. They express the hystericy of forbidden love perfectly, and although my case wasn't with an ex, just who i consider my illegal soulmate, it drives me insane he can't hear these words and feel them too. i agree with you wholly and completely, and he makes me cry also :P |

A new and probably wrong perspective for the fisrt verse, though one i find i like more: when she says "you'll never gain weight from a doughnut hole" she's not talking to him, she's talking to herself. To start with, his message made her think he loved her (the trick), but as she delved deeper she realised he was actually saying there was nothing there (the kick), and so she tells herself there's no use trying to make him care if he's already so set on denying it. (There's no one here dear, No one at all) the beauty is that you can hear her struggling to accept it, and failing. She grows from hauntingly sad, to bitter & angry he can't see, then feels the double burn of the new girl, but she's even more depressed at the knowledge that she's not going to be able to let go. I think by the end she's resigned to sitting there in his background, fading, because there's nothing else she can do. |
