Kings of Leon – Back Down South Lyrics 14 years ago
Hmmm, makes sense - the reference to the song "the runner"

For some reason I thought the runner was in reference to his guy, aka his dealer - hence "babe I'm kickin off now" as in getting his kicks.

Probably way off though...

I'm a little late to the show but here's my take, =)

I think it's written from the perspective of the front desk clerk at one of those seedy motels where sketchy folk grab a room by the hour (** "on by the hour sheets" **), for themselves and their escort.

He's hearing everything going on through the paper thin walls in the room adjacent to his front check in desk, all while working the night shift (two shifts in fact), noticing the sun coming up and how tired he is.

The tenants tip due to the nature of whats going on, but considering the shady individuals that show up, probably not much.

The escort changes her name every time, giving an alias. James happens to be the guy in this narration.

Also an amazing personification (or whatever the grammatical term is??) in saying considering the awkward situation he is in, he wishes he could be something that allowed him to hide and not be noticed. Fold himself away.

And finally, the last line of the chorus, ties it all together, is what he emphasizes this escort goes through every time after so many times. Faked pleasure, followed by the reality of apathy - whatever, etc. It's all the same.

This just makes sense to me given that it was a song writing exercise in coming up with the hardest phrase to craft a song around.

"maybe when things turn green again
it will be good to say you know me"

To me this is pretty straight forward. When he says: "maybe things turn green again" he is referring to the passing of some unspecified amount of time. The line taken literally would mean it's winter now, no leaves on the trees, until summer when "things turn green again" but symbolically it just means the passing of some decent amount of time.

"It will be good to say you know me": It's hope that in time she will start telling people she was glad to know him, and be grateful for the time they spent together. Because you know whenever you break up with someone, immediately following the breakup, your ex is bad mouthing you to everyone, telling everyone how big of a jerk you are, and basically hating you.

So it's a longing hope that in time, his ex will be glad she knew him

The song is just a down to earth, really cool way that bob sees god. He's just some dude, the same as you and me, getting caught up in some questionable circumstances that you and me tend to find ourselves in. But overall just one of those cool dudes with interesting stories that everyone loves to hang out with. Maybe almost ironic, in that God is doing these "sins" that all of us try to rationalize. He's just another cool dude, that's all

Genius.

Bob Dylan-esque.

"You don't need no reason or a 3 piece suit, to argue the truth"

"Keep on building prisons, gonna fill them all, keep on building bombs, gonna drop them all"

Dave Matthews – Dodo Lyrics 16 years ago
In the first verse, he's saying, at one point in time everyone believed the world was flat. It took one person, one instance to change that, now we know the world is round (a ball).

Using that to move into the chorus, if we can at one point be so sure, and so much in agreement that the world is flat, only to have it proved entirely wrong in an instant, it's now obvious that even the most collectively agreed upon "truths" can be wrong in a second, how do we know whether what life feeds us is not rubbish (life billows smoke inside my head). And if is the case, why would ever "play by the rules" that are hammered into our brains (that our parents, teachers, authority figures, governement feed us)? Do it your own way, he's pleading. Don't be hypnotized by scoieties pressure.

The Dodo verse: besides the dinosours, probably the most known extinction, and maybe even some older people alive can remember it (not sure on that). Did she even know she was the last one...ever? And if you did know you were the last one ever, what would you do, who would you be, how would you leave your legacy?

*Chorus*

Maybe what everyone believes and preaches is true, but why would you worry, why would you try to force YOUR beliefs on others? Why would you worry, whether it's true or something completely 180 is true, why worry, humans are very adaptable creatures, we'll be OK.

Could be way off
