I think that this song is Jeff Magnum sympathizing with holocaust victims. I think the "two Headed Boy" is a jewish boy separated from his family and lover and how he misses and his thoughts of wanting to be with them. I think the part where he sings "In my dreams you're alive and you're crying..." may be about Jeff Magnum's borderline amorous infatuation with Anne Frank (who died when she was 16 if I'm correct haha) or it may be about a girl that the boy is in love with who may also have been a victim of the holocaust. And the end, I think, is Jeff Magnum's thoughts on the whole situation.
I believe part 1 to be about the boy being seen as a freak (two headed) for being jewish during WW2 and the hardships that it came with in that time period and how life would have been easier if he were a christian ("The world that you need is wrapped in gold silver sleeves. Left beneath Christmas trees in the snow") and part 2 is about him being in the camp and what he is thinking and possibly his death, which was brought on by being burned in a furnace ("And you left with your head filled with flames. And you watched as your brains fell out through your teeth").
I dunno maybe it's too obvious in context with his other songs but these are just my thoughts on these two eerily beautiful songs.
I think Neutral Milk Hotel may be the best thing that ever happened to music. |
