On the Esplanade Lyrics

On the esplanade
Down by the sea
Baby, watch my back
Think somebody's following me

I feel overcome
With trying to play it dead
Feel safe that way
Is it better than displaying instead?

It was a big slip for me
To roll up my golden life
She should have saved, saved my energy

I'm awake today
So nice to see the window
Wash my dreams away
I prop myself up on my pillow

Been through shaky times
But I'm glad you found your way
There was too much panic then
From here on it'll be straight all the way

It was a big slip for me
to roll up my golden life
She should have saved, saved my energy

Changing with time
I can wait for the sign
is this right?

They choose your side
but the day brings the
pride of the light

Oh with peace comes at night
I will never break from the shadow of exhile,
to be blinded

I might be totally wrong on this one, but this is what I think. I have a very vague understanding of the song. I think the song is about a mistake.

The first stanza means... ??? I'm not sure what the sea would have to do with his mistake, but the mistake may be personified here ("Think somebody's following me"--the mistake is haunting him).

The second stanza may mean that it feels safer to pretend it didn't happen ("trying to play it dead...feel safe that way") than to admit that it did ("displaying"=admitting that it DID indeed happen) and deal with it.

The chorus means that it was a mistake to throw away the positive things in his "golden life" (It was a big slip for me to roll up my golden life.) The next sentence stresses his regret (SHOULD HAVE). As for the reference to his energy, there's probably a little more to it than I can understand.

Now for the stanza beginning with "I'm awake today." Thw window may offer a distraction from the mistake the speaker made (looking out at something else). Hence the "washing my dreams away" bit.

The stanza beginning "Been through shaky times" is obvious. It used to be awful for the speaker and his audience, but from here on out, the narrator vows that it will all be ok.

The end of the song is:

???? Inside my heart ???? Inside my heart

which MAY be a key part of the song.

Again, this might not be what "Julian Plenti" meant exactly. :)

These lyrics are wrong... and some are missing.

At the beginning of the song there is a voice saying "Abort. Decoys." After the first "To roll up my golden life" you hear the same voice say "Decoys" again. After "Should have saved, saved my energy." The voice comes in again but I can't exactly decipher what it's saying. If someone can, that'd be awesome. I'm really intrigued.

The last verse is: Oh the peace comes at night, I will never break from this shadow of exhile To be blinded.. Changing with time I can't wait for the sign Is this right? Is this right?

My Opinion

will change it now. As I put the lyrics up I listened to the live version of the song, it was before the album release.

I think this song would be way better without the weird voice in the background.
