@[ihatewestseneca:2705] "we all know how women are" - that is a generalization and clearly not true. your statement isnt fact and not made from logic, just bitterness from your own experience. let me explain the following lyric "i think the needing just took everything the wanting was sung". they had everything they wanted but there comes a point when wanting isnt enough. sometimes what you want and what you need are two very different things, and thats why they broke up |

| Kristin Hersh – Me And My Charms Lyrics | 12 years ago |

i heard this in the movie foxfire too. my first impression of the song was that the "angel" is her child she had with the person who left. i've wondered what else the angel could be, but nothing else seems to fit. "I haven't left this step And when the lights go out I pick the angel up I only have two hands" perhaps she is talking about how she would run after the one who left but she has this "angel" to care for.she only has "two hands" meaning she cant do both. Is she here? Is she here right now? Drive her off; don't bother to call I'm checking out today this is the only part of the song that confuses me. if the angel is her child then that cannot be the "she" being referred to here. perhaps this is someone her lover left her for. maybe she is saying 'drive off with her, dont call me, im leaving anyway'. checking out of a hotel? hospital? going to commit suicide? just some ideas. |

| Sarah Slean – Society Song Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| i think this song is about how some singers/artists change to fit the way society wants them to be.they sell themselves short, sell themselves out.sarah is saying that even though this may get them the grand prize, she is fine with that because she has something bigger up her sleeve.part of her would like to tell the world who they really are, share their 'dirty laundry' but she is above that, she is a nice girl and has an 'inner cinderella' herself. when she says inner cinderella she means that she wasn't born in the spotlight of fortune and fame either, she started from rags to riches too. perhaps she doesnt want her own story in the media/analyzed so she keeps quiet. | |
| Kathleen Edwards – Away Lyrics | 13 years ago |

"I remember the way, driving home late,"...she is on her way home late one night and she is remembering the way to someone's house, possibly thinking of how it would play out if she drove there right at that moment. "I was rehearsing a part From down at the bar" probably means that the last time she saw this person she was trying to get up the nerve to say something. "my mouth smelled like a drink, we were laughing i think" she was drunk so she either didnt get to say it or it came out sounding more like a joke so the person didnt take her seriously. when she says "Do you pick up the phone Do you check your mail, Do you answer your door even if it's late?" she is wondering if he would've answered if she had called or wrote him. As she already stated, its late and she wonders if he would still come to the door at that hour and be okay with it. When she says "I don't know who to call, I don't know who to write, And I think I forgot What your face looks like" it sounds like she doesn't feel close to anyone to call or write but she thinks of him so she mustve felt close to this person. And since she cant remember his face so well, she must've went away for a long time after they last saw each other. Then she says "do you think i changed? i swear i never tried" She wonders if he would think she is different now. She sounds apologetic for if she did change. cuz if she changed, theres a chance he wouldnt see her the same anymore, perhaps not feel the same way about her as before. "memory is a terrible thing when you use it right" is my favourite line. what she means is that when someone meets up with you after a long time, they only know how you used to be so even if you changed just a lil, it might seem like a big change to them. this can work against someone, which kathleen seems to think is the case in her situation. she keeps repeating "ive been away" bringing this to be the focus of the song. this lyric helps divide the song in parts ; her memory of this place, wondering how it would play out if she contacted this person after so long, and lastly - that she has been gone a long time and is now back, so this returns us to the present which is her driving back from whatever took her away in the first place.i assume this would be her music career.just a guess though:P |

| Brandi Carlile – Tragedy Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
i think the song meaning is as follows; this person felt it was necessary to let someone go for their own good because this person wasn't good for them. "I'll defend the tragedy we knew as the end" so she doesnt regret the ending because she knows it was for the best no matter how much it hurts the person right now. She is telling them 'you can count on anyone, you have friends who are still there for you even if i cant be'. and she may also be saying that the friends might tell the person 'you guys will patch things back up' but she is saying this will not happen because 'i defend the tragedy that we knew as the end'. it was hard to let the person go but 'its harder not to save' someone you love. |

| Ida Maria – Keep Me Warm Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| bobbutcher, i def see what you mean! i like your interpretation. its def another good prospective for this song:) thanks for mentioning it. i thought about it as well. | |
| Ida Maria – Keep Me Warm Lyrics | 15 years ago |

The song is written vaguely enough so that it could be interpreted a few diff ways. it can also be interpreted that she has been through a lot of men who played games with her so she learned the games because of them.but she wont use those games on him just because they're fighting. she believes that this relationship is the one that will last because even when they are fighting she is smoking his cigarettes and drinking coffee and these are reminders of him because all of them keep her warm. the line 'keep me warm' may be her way of saying that she still feels secure even though they are fighting. i also saw how it could be about alcoholism.but that may be reading too much into it ha. |

| Kathleen Edwards – National Steel Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
i like pipKo's interpretation. here is an added thought to that notion...perhaps the line "trading a daughter and 2000 dollars for a national steel" is not about the father losing a daughter but maybe she is trading settling down/family life/kids (daughter), with the $2000 dollars for a guitar. otherwise, the lyric 'trading a daughter and 2000 dollars for a national steel', sounds like a parent would be trading/exchanging kathleen and money for a guitar for himself.because when a trade is made, you give something up and get something in return, so i dont see how that interpretation works because than the parent would be getting the guitar, not her. i agree she was asking him for a loan for some of the $2000. "are you writing this all down" refers to how he is keeping track of everything she owes him. money, being a grandfather perhaps? what do you guys think? |
