| Lorde – Still Sane Lyrics | 11 years ago |
|
I am pretty sure that this song contains a reference to the WHY? song "By Torpedo or Crohn's." The WHY? lyric is "only those evil live to see their own likeness in stone my brother said that" (Yoni Wolf referring to his brother Jonathan I guess) It sounds far-fetched for Lorde to paraphrase WHY? but she did name-drop a Broken Social Scene song on "Ribs" so anything is possible. Girl knows her shit, and as soon as I heard this song I caught the reference. My interpretation is that she's seriously thinking about that quote and what it means to watch oneself get famous-- no literal statues yet, but you get the idea. |

| Aimee Mann – Lost In Space Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
I know Lost in Space is primarily about addiction, but I think this song also fits very well with depression. It doesn't read as ironic to me so much as detached. The sudden onset of depression or severe anxiety can leave family and friends confused about the disappearance of the person they knew and loved. To me, this sounds like the feeling of suddenly realizing that everyone around you is talking about someone else when they are actually talking about how you used to be. Alternatively, the feeling of hiding a problem or hurt can also create that detachment: the line "she's the face" is I think actually talking about the speaker. She is both the face and the double, faking happiness or going about her daily life efficiently, while no one is aware that it feels as though someone else is living her life. |

| Florence + the Machine – My Boy Builds Coffins Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| I think there are three layers to this song, and it has a slightly different meaning at each of them. At face value, it's about a girl narrating whose "boy" (boyfriend, I assume) is a coffin-builder. He has an endless, thankless task and devotes his life to making accoutrements for death. Then we also get the kings, beggars, etc. who are all equalized and put into coffins at the end of their lives. But for each of these people, the experience is different. I wonder not only about the coffin-maker but about this narrator who is so close to him. She seems to be frustrated on his behalf and shares little about herself. | |

| Broken Bells – October Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| oh! I meant to point out the first lines of P&P -- "as someone sets light to the first fires of autumn, we settle down to cut ourselves apart." Seasonal reference, yknow. | |
| Broken Bells – October Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
I was wondering that as well. It may as simple as a reference to the time of year that he had this experience-- also, something about autumn makes me think of naivete and the feeling you have of going into a new year invincible (in high school and college, which might make sense based on the fact that the girl sounds as though she's young, maybe in college). I also don't know how relevant this is, but this song reminds me a little of "The Past and Pending," which has a similar tone to me. Both sound as though they are about the realizations that come in youth, a kind of sudden sobriety as one realizes that one has been acting foolishly. My take on this song is in line with some of the earlier ones-- whatever the specifics, he's pointing out to a girl he is seeing or has seen that she's using him as something that he isn't, and thinks her understanding of love is more mature (and probably more dramatic) than it really is. The tone of the very last line is so tired and almost bitter-- as though he has been trying to make her see and is finally giving up. |

| TV on the Radio – Will Do Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
Hey the last verse is partially in spanish. It reads: oh my reddest rose, caldera set it off how your fire grows, hermosa caldera glistening through your fuse it blows, carino caldera set it off as your body flows the second hand flashes passes over your skin like time "hermosa caldera" means "beautiful caldera," caldera as matt said being created by the eruption of a volcano. I think totr21 is close but I'm pretty sure he is saying "through your fuse it blows, carino caldera." Carino (supposed to have an accent on the n but I can't figure out how to do it) is also a spanish word, which means something close to "dear," or "darling" in English-- so "beautiful caldera" and "darling caldera." affectionately comparing her to volcano (definitely hot! haha) |

| Themselves – Rappin4Money Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
hey, out of the lyrics booklet, with spelling corrected: WHY?: This is for them male lyrical perps who want to enter the squared circle with an old pale urkle Working birkenstocks with socks kid But still pulling all the lurking working girls nad hot chicks Gold watch on your wrist, all pissed, watching me fold any chance you might of had at a tryst like what's this? Hey kids, this song's not for profits, Like all but locust honey, long walking and God is Or it is and that's funny, to be rapping for money, so which is or which isn't it? If it ain't dick to make I'll rock my fake batch of syphilis which is strictly for pity, but boy it ain't pretty, the faux rash on my breast plate. I'd ask if this pay sbut upper class and rich say broach no cash on a mix-tape, it's gauche and that shows distaste. My good tongue displaced and replaced by a hood one like men and mice is in these times of economic crisis I ain't rappin' for money Doseone: This is for them young male lyrical perps who volley aimless and anxious tween unwell women and works, With a less than rent to they merc, And an ant on they shirt. Ain't nothin perf, cept for death vertex and pre-Cambrian earth But that depends (why wouldn't it?) on the caliber of your friends And whether you garden lightly in the feeding of men, Where kids had did sing songs not for profits, Like all bu locust, honey long walking and god is, Or it is and that's funny- Like rapping for money, So which is or which isn't it? You flashing flint for a tongue, hair a choir of wicks that's lit, Or just like your sedatives sung and a derivative hip, Shit, I prefer my bezels a bundle of dysfunction and thunder, Their poems bones a certain something to cover, Ain't a more significant others with which I'd rather fail a mother, As each our own proverbial suns, our good tongues replaced by hood ones, and then spun, where mics is hung in these times of crisis... I ain't rappin for God I ain't rappin for pity I ain't rappin for profits I ain't rappin for chicks I ain't rappin for others I ain't rappin for money I ain't rappin for money the end they are kind of spliced together, and the chorus usually is just spliced from the verses so the words aren't new (or particularly important if you ask me) The last part they're kind of mixed together |

| Why? – The Fall of Mr. Fifths Lyrics | 16 years ago |

I think the last part is: god i'm sorry, i'm just being crazy. i'm sorry. i'm just being crazy, i know. but i'm paying attention to you, kay? i'm fine. everything's totally fine. i feel a lot better now. I listened to it a few times and I am pretty sure he says "but I'm paying attention to you" -- I also think it makes sense given the context. ComaLogic's suggestion also makes sense but I just don't hear the "me" |
