| Dir En Grey – Merciless Cult (English) Lyrics | 16 years ago |

Well first of all I don't think this is either about the church because let's be honest, Kyo doesn't give a shit about it, or about real cults, because that would be just too random and nonsense. I'll give a general idea of what I think about this song: This is about Dir en grey's audience, the "cult" thing fits and the "merciless" part refers to their passive attitude regarding Kyo's self-mutilation on stage. They all want a good show, no matter what. They like to see him bleed for fun; how merciless is that? I think that what he means by "please love me" is "accept me for who I am" and "this blood and the meaning" well, just think about how many times Kyo cut, scratched, fish-hooked, punched himself with the mic or whatever he has done in stage... It all has a meaning. He screams out mad when he stops and thinks about it for a minute; but he knew it all along, maybe his personality or his attitude drove him to this mental/sentimental/social/whatever state... So he can't really complain about it. "But I just remembered there's no love here" well, maybe he realizes that his fans are just FANS; your family loves you, your friends love you, your lover does, but not a bunch of people who buy your cds and send you letters saying how hot you are. I think that's what he meant, besides, when you love someone, you don't just stare at him/her bleeding out while you do nothing to stop it or help that person. He has mentiones "gasping for breath" in another song, Machiavellism, which is CLEARLY about himself. Kyo said many times that he writes to himslef, from himself, for himself, about himself, and never uses any external experience, influence, ideas or whatever. So I think that Kyo really doesn't give a shit about cults, church, or whatever. And why does everybody want to relate every Dir en grey song to an unhappy couple, defeated lovers, a cooled-out love or anything related to romantic love?! WTF?! |

| Kyo said many times that he writes about himself, his experiences, what he feels... I don't think he wrote about religion, society in general, or anything like that... He doesn't seem like the type or person who would be writing about kids using drugs and having sex at a young age... I don't think he cares about that... | |

I think this is about either abortion or killing a baby; "was it freedom what we won" makes me think of a couple asking themselves if now that their baby is gone, are they really "free" again? Then, "even the love that is locked inside the shell is swallowed by the heartless beast, what makes them do it?" The shell could be either the womb or a cradle; maybe even an incubator or whatever is called. The heartless beast could be the mother aborting or the person who killed the baby. Then he asks what makes people do such thing. "Deep into the red darkness" could be about blood. If this song was about abortion, maybe the mother bleeds out... She feels dizzy ("everything gets twisted") and then she dies, thou I don't really get the part when he says "This life I hold high and proud.. " if it were about abortion or killing a child... It's just a wild guess... |

This is definitely about Kyo himself. "The lonely red stage at night I dedicate the following to the aspiring leading actor That's where the truth is" Clearly he said things referent to finding the truth in the stage because that's where he can be himself. He's not talking about an actor like the ones in the movies, but a person who express himself/herself in a stage, as he does. "Seeing people becoming friendly while clapping hands" This makes me think of an audience, the fans in a concert. "I will live with my work I scream with this body of flesh that separates heaven and hell I carve the sins What will be the proof of my existence if it disappears with the wind?" He is saying he is going to live with his songs and his performances, that he uses his body to fully express his feelings and maybe he feels like he is in the "limbo", not heaven, nor hell. that could be like... he doesn't know where he is gonna belong to once he's dead. On the second sentence he might be talking about self mutilation, maybe to leave a mark, a phisical proof of his feelings so the wind doesn't carry them away, I think that's refering to his voice singning but words are blown by the wind and fade away. That's all I can do today, gotta go to work. |

Oh, and the "all dolled up as a star, you make me laugh" Maybe he wanted to express the feeling of being "garnished" to look like every star should, and to be more "attractive" for the future fans, giving the sense of that tough guy, the typical rockstar everybody loves and everybody wants to see on stage. He probablly thinnks that is pathetic, but more pathetic than that is him accepting it. So that makes him laugh at himself. |

In my opinion (I could be mistaken of course), I think it's Kyo talking to himself. "You're the one that's lost now" I think that maybe he is lost when it comes to his lyrics, maybe he feels like he has no inspiration; let's be honest, his lyrics don't even look like they used to. "You shallow shit with that sad little look on your face Why don't you just grow yourself some wings of pity" Kyo IS an unhappy person, everybody knows that, he has said it himself, so maybe he feels empty and when he looks at himself in the mirror he sees that sadness in his eyes. The part of the wings of pity might be sarcastic, like "why don't you go cry in your room". "Lose track of who you are, all dolled up as a star...? You make me laugh Money? Fame? Success?" He might be talking about his carrer, that he is a star now, he's famous, has money, has succeeded in the music scene, but maybe he changed into something he doesn't want to be, he feels like he isn't himself anymore, or maybe he can't be himself anymore. "Suck Me Destroy" That is just a "fuck you" "Even when you talk big, you do it by protecting yourself" Kyo is a very cold person, he doesn't talk much and maybe he is talking about protecting himself by only opening up in musical aspects, I mean, he limits himself and only talks about the band, he doesn't want anybody to know anything about his personal life. And that could be his "shield", he avoids personal stuff and only focuses on the band. Something like that... "Suck Me" Fuck you again. This could be completely wrong, but he has written songs about himself before, R to the Core, Clever Sleazoid, Machiavellism... And this, to me, is definitely about Kyo talking to himself. Maybe he is unhappy with how he is as a writer and singer now... And the PV is kinda supporting my point of view... well, how can I explain it...? Many scenes in the video show something like a typical North American family and lifestyle, and there's also many "drawings" and images with a very western style. The fact that there's a family watching TV and they appear in the screen makes me think of something like "we are a big hit in the US now" but maybe Kyo isn't really happy with that. He even said in recent interviews that he doesn't really enjoy touring overseas when it comes to the US lately. It could be because of the fact that many fans in the US like them because of their Vulgar~TMOAB era and later, not many really enjoy their previous CD's or really like their VK times (many "fans" are glad they quitted make up and stuff and prefer a more... "western style"), or maybe just because it's exhausting, who knows... Besides, many non-japanese fans have requested more songs in english, not realizing that they are a JAPANESE band and Kyo sings in Japanese, he had done that for years, only including short phrases in english, but suddenly he has to change the other way around to "please" many Dir en grey fans. And I guess he isn't very happy with that. He dosn't have to write songs in english only, but he has to sing in a "perfect" english too, because when he "did what he could" everyone complained and said "he should definitely practise/improve his english" (Why don't you improve your japanese then??) and that must be a pain in the ass. The part in the video where you see a woman cutting her tongue maybe means he can't express what he really thinks. Maybe the whole "fame and success" has limited his "repertoire"? For the "circus" thing... maybe he finds himslef as a clown, entertaining others but behind a "mask", not really showing his true self. And there are many parts where you can see female figures lifting their skirts, in provocative poses; I interpreted that as a feeling of "protitution"; maybe Kyo thinks he "sold" himself for money, fame and success? This post is too long already so I'm going to stop writing, besides I've already explained the idea... And the Indian stuff... I have no idea what they mean, I'm not into Hindu culture so I can't figure out the meaning. |
