So here's my guess: Brendan is flipping through his lyric journal and picking out seperate pieces he wrote. Dude calls up his homies, says "Guys! I got a bunch of cocaine! Get your equipment down here and let's bang this out!" So, they all show up, do some mjnes and just start going at it.Neil feels the coke kick in and yells "WOOOOHOOOOO!" in the back. Brendan applies some of the lyrics he wrote, emphasizing vocals that sound cool rather than an actual coherent song, as well as coming up with some lines on the spot (these are closed and velvet ropes...) that may or may not be more relevant to the current situation at hand. And that is literally what the song is about. Y'know, on an estimated guess. |

| This is a pretty lousy song. The lyrics aren't subtle and there's just too many words for the music, its crammed in too tightly without enough meaning past "I miss you, I'm sad, I'm horny". The vocalist wants to be emotional but there's no soul in his voice, as if he doesn't want to fight and already admitted defeat. Its a song about nostalgia and a longing for things past. Its an overdone concept, and doesn't bring any witty metaphors, just abrasively blunt ones. I hate this song because it is the definition of weak, and when there's a fight to be had it advocates surrender. The only lesson I can take from this song is "don't turn into this loser." This is the first song I've ever heard from this band, however it is quite possibly one of the worst songs I've ever heard in my life. | |

"Fuck this, I'm pissed, I'm out of bullshit to cry about. You can pass these fuck you's around. I'll be dead and gone when this shit hits the crowd" I really like that part. Something I feel I should do. |

I'm about 90% certain this song is actually about the anonymously written book, Evasion. Its a anarchic documentation of someone who, after high school, decided against continuing school, and against work. He turns to train hopping and just living one day at a time. The main character constantly has to scam large corporations and dumpster dive just to eat and get by. Its actually a really good read, and I definitely recommend it. It has a following in the punk rock community, and any fan of Rise Against should know that Tim's an avid book reader. It wouldn't come to a surprise if he hasn't read this too. Now after reading the book, I could relate the lyrics perfectly. The name "Paper Wings" represents his claim to fame from this book of his. The line in the first verse "Landing somewhere far from here with no one else around" is the singer's challenge to the author: How will you get by if you don't have anyone else? The chorus alludes to the author's writing style: He's constantly laughing about the things he does, and makes it out as humorous. The singer calls him out on this; "I can't tell if you're laughing, between each smile there's a tear in your eyes", meaning he believes he's truly isn't happy. "Swing for the fences, son, he must have told you once." The author's parents are mentioned I believe only once throughout the whole novel, and not much is said about them. The singer believes the father must have at least told him once to be all he could be, instead of a wanderlust hobo. To put the singer's entire reply into one statement: "Is this the life that you lead? Or the life that's led for you? Will you take the road that's been laid out before you?" I love both the book and the critical retaliation this song brings. |
