Dar Williams – February Lyrics 11 years ago
My take on this brilliant song by Dar is that it is the person in the song has split up with their old partner, and the winter metaphor is about the end of the relationship - and as has been mentioned above - February is the longest and hardest part of the winter (in the northern hemisphere at least). Throwing the keys in the water, and having them freeze up so quickly - just like their owner (the ex) is a brilliant use of imagery.

There is then some discussion around the relationship, about how they forgot to love each other, culminating with the "presents without cards' - again already mentioned above. The real clincher for me is the description of shovelling snow endlessly (working on the relationship) and they wake up and it's snowing again. It's a never ending and pointless cycle.

The new relationship starts in the warmer months however 'the leaves were turning' when the relationship becomes committed (the new lover makes keys to the house). When they get home however, they start chopping wood so that they can survive the winter (the hard part of the relationship) 'because you never know how next year will be'. Either based on the previous experience - the winter which saw the end of the relationship - or because of pure imagery about chopping wood to try and heat over winter, we wonder if this relationship is destined to fail as well.

What a brilliant song!

Duran Duran – Tel Aviv Lyrics 16 years ago
It's a shame the song never came out with the lyrics - but they look great nonetheless. I've never been to Tel Aviv but the music paints a picture in my mind, down to the Wailing Wall sounds of Simon Le Bon's vocal melody (is that what it's called) laid over the music scape. A great piece of music.

Duran Duran – A Matter of Feeling Lyrics 16 years ago
I have a different view to the others, I think the song is all about someone who desperately wants to be with someone - to find a partner. They want it so much that they feel somewhat alienated - even at parties where people try to "pin you down". By pinning you down they want to know "who the other half is"? They smile along even though you tell them you're still "just looking" (falling off the same mountain).

The person in the song (I call them "you") have started to mistake one night stands with love - "Steal away in the morning" (get up and go after a bit of rough and tumble, in the early morning light sort of thing) "Love's already history to you" (what seemed like love last night after a few drinks is actually nothing like love - it's only a few hours ago and it's history already. "It's a habit you're forming" - this is becoming the norm rather than the exception, the one night stands.

The line about "this body's desperate for something new" - means you think the next best thing is just around the corner and you keep trying (sleeping around) looking for it. "Tears will dry as you're leaving" - you'll get over it as quick as the other times, but "who knows, you might find something to last".

Some of Duran Duran's songs are impossible to interpret but this is a classic that begs interpretation - this is just mine. I spent many many hours listening to this one during my final school year (graduation year) exams. See what you think of my other interpretations on Duran's songs...
