Cat Power – I Found a Reason (Velvet Underground cover) Lyrics 14 years ago
To me there's some conflict between doubt and certainty in this song. She says she found a reason to believe in this other person's reassurances about their love, but she also needs proof, she needs him to come to her. He'd *better* come to her. Makes me think a lot about faith, and how human beings need faith to be rewarded with proof to keep on believing. She's willing to believe, but he has to eventually give her reason to believe in his actions ("come to me", "run to me"), instead of just his words ("all the things you say").

I like this cover, even though it's very different from the original. They're practically two different songs, this is very sincere and low-key while the VU is quite ironic and more buzzing. I don't even think of this as a cover so much as an adaptation.

Best Coast – Boyfriend Lyrics 15 years ago
Wow, now that you mention it, it sure does! But I think "Boyfriend"'s intro is about a measure longer, the music comes in a bit earlier in "Badlands".

Ryan Adams – Nuclear Lyrics 15 years ago
Ahh, love. What else can make you feel totally giddy and totally out of your mind with apprehension all at once? The passion the singer feels is likened to a nuclear explosion, enough kilowatts to annihilate a beach full of unsuspecting denizens (even the rich ones, their money can't save them now). The singer also feels a bit tortured by his feelings, keeping himself up all night wondering if she feels the same way: the lines "Sentimental geek/Shut up and go to sleep" are effective because they're so brief and unexplained, it makes the song more spontaneous and emphasizes the singer's fervor. In fact the entire song benefits from the brief yet distinct imagery, that's what gives it its punch.

Best line of the song, I agree: "When I saw her the Yankees lost to the Braves". What a way to put it. I know what you mean, man.

John Mellencamp – Key West Intermezzo (I Saw You First) Lyrics 15 years ago
I can definitely see the Gatsby influence. The girl comes off very socially adept and glamorous, as if she fills the space around her with magic, the kind that Gatsby would put on a pedestal. And the narrator can't imagine why she'd be with who she is, which fits Gatsby's perception of Daisy's relationship with the uncouth Tom. The imagery of the song and the warm buzz it creates wouldn't be out of place at one of Gatsby's roaring 20's shindigs.

Jefferson Airplane – Today Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is too beautiful. The eerie, serpentine electric guitar riff over humble and honest fingerpicking creates a darkly intimate atmosphere, the tambourine adds a wild pulse or heartbeat, and the vocals of both Marty Balin and also Grace Slick on backup are yearning and ethereal. The lyrics are so passionate, especially "I'm so full of love, I could burst apart and start to cry" and "To go on from here I can't use words, they don't say enough" on through to the end, which just explodes in feeling. This song just leaves me speechless.

Damien Jurado – Ohio Lyrics 16 years ago
I wrote Damien Jurado about this song once, expressing my adoration for it. He informed me that it is 100% fiction, inspired by a girl he knows in Ohio, but not about her.

As for it's meaning, seems pretty straightforward, a song about homesickness and longing. The girl longs for her home, and the singer longs for her. In a story of simple images it conveys a plaintive sadness of distance.
