This is probably stretching meanings beyond Homer & Hardy's intentions... but I picture the singer tearing up at seeing a love of his marrying someone else. "Onion rings:" onions make you cry, see... "Feet are filled with glue:" no longer free but anchored to one person, see? And might it be "ALTAR life," continuing the wedding theme? "a silken sponge that calls saliva love" and "undetermined oyster beds... to be a hedge:" doubts this marriage is based on real feelings, only on bodily fluids and convenience (like a financial hedge). "Favorite Ferlinghetti found in Auntie Mame" is interesting. In the original book, Auntie Mame hooks up with a so-called poet who's a big phony, just a leech and a lush. Whatcha think? |

Not sure how seriously to take these factoids: The Residents play in EYE-ball masks, their alter ego is the CRYPT-ic corporation, one of their most famous works is the Freak Show... and those falsetto hooting atonal voices sound very Residential, too...??? |

Wow, everyone's twisting slowly in the wind over a two letter word... I can't believe I'm the first one to mention the tasty brain-spinning paradox at the heart of the lyric: owning no organ and no car, then selling a car to buy an organ... |

| They Might Be Giants – I'm Your Boyfriend Now Lyrics

In my experimental film of the music video of this song, I would show a filthy kitchen table covered with all kinds of crazy stuff at the line "Your boyfriend likes Italian food and wine..." PLOP PLOP suddenly appear a bulk-size Sam's Club size giant can of Chef Boy-Ar-Dee with two forks sticking out of it, and a screw-cap bottle of cheap wine.
But nobody knows about this - I'm still figuring it out. |

Am I the only one who hears a very strong parody of David Bowie in this? The style of singing sounds like it. TMBG has ripped him before, in "Au Contraire..." |

Find the Residents' album FINGERPRINCE and play the track "Tourniquet of Roses."
"All that's left is something else, there is no more to say..."
In the same march tempo. The same vocal cadences.
I do believe TMBG were consciously composing a tribute. |

One of the most moving songs ever written on the death of a child and the ice-cold lonely hole left in the parents' lives. |

I always thought it was a tribute to The Residents in their eyeball masks. Those falsetto voices crowing in the background are very unusual in a Tom Waits song but prototypical Residents! As are the odd atonal marimba licks. |

Sorry, the Lieutenant didn't SHAKE, he "SKANKED her head with every word." A skank is a woman so low she does everything a whore does without even taking money. TW is coining a verb from the noun, accusing her of being the worst kind of woman. |
