This is most definitely the samples from the original movie that are used in the song. Thanks for this, lujk! Very helpful. :)

Youth Group – Shadowland Lyrics 13 years ago
Feels like adulthood and coming of age to me.

You hit the age of majority, out of school (no more damn chalk and embarrassing school mishaps to worry about) and without any direction. Trying to move on to greater things now but the plans you had from childhood and adolescence don't really seem to work. Familiar things seem confusing and different to you now than what they had been as a child.

Your high school sweetheart seems to be the only thing you want to keep for the memories - even if you were so ignorant and foolish at the time, where you couldn't really see what was going to happen between you.

Shadowland itself feels like the rumoured but otherwise unknown experiences that wait for you. From your freedom and irresponsibility, you never realised your ever present foreboding shadow. Now faced with the reality of what was once the future, you grasp for the memories of your childhood and your friends, not wanting to sink into this "shadowland".

I whole-heartedly agree with Citizen Erased's interpretation of the last stanza, ties in nicely with my interpretation of the rest of the song, especially this part:
"Perhaps the narrator had health problems all his life, and found solace in the comfort of his high school friend."

"Comfort in his high school friend." :)

just my interpretation. I might rewrite this to be a little more clear and coherent haha! :D,

Jóhann Jóhannsson – The Sun’s Gone Dim and the Sky’s Turned Black Lyrics 13 years ago
I do not exaggerate when I say this is definitely one of the saddest tracks I've ever heard.
Those lyrics... that voice... I'm amazed I'm still alive at all.

Mojave 3 – Trying To Reach You Lyrics 13 years ago
Breakup song. I was watching Nowhere (the Gregg Araki film), and this came on, I was thinking "sounds a bit like Mojave 3", I nearly fell off my seat when i saw it in the credits (along with a myriad of other songs that I picked up (I was literally shouting out "THIS IS SONIC YOUTH, I SWEAR")) :D

The narrator (a male) wants to break off a relationship. he keeps trying to work up the will to do so, reminding himself of it all the time ("I got a number on my wall"). he's been thinking about this long and hard, taking his time before he really knows what's the right thing to do, trying to find more of a reason to break up. of course, he wants to do it causing the least pain, trying to find the easiest way to do it, but he knows that it'll be the hardest thing to do.

hope that makes sense. I might be oversimplifying it, but it's a fairly simple song (lyrically), and I can't see much immediate metaphor in it, so I'm translating it rather literally.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Tick Lyrics 13 years ago
Honestly one of the best tracks from their earlier stuff. Fever to Tell would be my fav album. Does anybody know how many times she screams "tick" in each outburst? I counted ~40 in the last near the end. :D

Medicine – I Hear Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is pure ecstasy, easily the best song from The Buried Life.
I love that almost psychoactive distortion, it's very Jimi Hendrix-esque in its sound.

Mogwai – May Nothing But Happiness Come Through Your Door Lyrics 14 years ago
The song sounds so sad. The whole thing is so downtempo and the song never really moves anywhere, it get's loud and quiet and whatnot but the melody hardly changes.

I believe the song tells the story of someone who is trying to reach a close friend but s/he is swallowed up inside something else, isolated from his or her friends and completely not their self. Whatever this may be is undecided, but it is truly dragging the friend down, causing nothing but misery, apathy etc.

The song's very title gives the image that the person only wishes the best for their friend. And right at the end of the song, the spoken words of a telephone operator simply give the mantra of "please hold the line", implying that the friend is 'currently unavailable' and (no matter how hard the person tries to contact the friend) nothing will get through.

In a similar vein, the song could also tell the story of a person trying to contact their lover who has moved on. Again, the person only wishes the best for the loved one but he or she can never actually reach them.

Personal side note: This second interpretation is currently what I'm going through at the moment, and - for now at least - this song is better than sex & drugs & post-rock'n'roll. I loved her, and I still do, but she doesn't know it and probably never will. I only want happiness for her, I want to say goodbye before she leaves my life... before I leave hers.
But I can never contact her. I always end up waiting, "holding the line"...

Medicine – the pink Lyrics 14 years ago
Great band. Pure awesome track. Why aren't there more people listening to them!? Possibly the most underrated shoegaze band ever. They've been known as the US equivalent of MBV. I love MBV slightly more than these guys, but Medicine is only very slightly behind them.

Anyway, great song.

The Strokes – What Ever Happened? Lyrics 14 years ago
No,

it's most definitely referring to Tennessee Williams, the playwright (excellent plays, he's done).
Most likely specifically referring to his A Streetcar Named Desire.

Washington – Welcome Stranger Lyrics 14 years ago
Brilliant song.
I'm sure that this is about a girl who's been cheated on and since has had a break up.

At first he tells her lies that he isn't seeing anyone else, but it's obvious that he is. For her own sake she still tries to believe him. Deep down however, she feels jealous that he was with another, and she sings to keep her mind off him. But she still loves him and often ends up crying over him.

She feels like she didn't do enough to keep him with her as well: "the fucking... the love" it wasn't enough to keep him.

Later she tries to repress the whole thing. She pretends he's a complete stranger. As if she had never met him. Soon, she feels no pain about the break up, and she get's on with life...

But unfortunately, because she still loves him deep down, whenever she is reminded about him the feelings come back. Whenever someone says his name, she feels all the repressed pain.

Most beautiful line that is:
"and I don't feel any pain, just as long as no one says your name".

Kinda sad that is, wouldn't you agree?
Once again, brilliant song. =)

Mojave 3 – Bluebird of Happiness Lyrics 14 years ago
Half way through, the song suddenly shifts into these wonderful guitar riffs with the line "saw you turning, big eyes burning...". And, as quickly as the guitars come in, they disappear with equal abruptness.
If you don't know the lyrics, the beautiful electric guitar chords sound so joyful and energetic - contrasting sharply with the melancholy of the piano pieces. But as soon as you listen to the lyrics, the guitars suddenly sound so very sad. They unleash this deep hidden sadness that you couldn't pick up the first few times. It works in perfect harmony with the lyrics.

It's an absolutely terrific song.
Beautifully written.
I simply love it. =)

Múm – If I Were a Fish Lyrics 14 years ago
Fantastic opening line to a fantastic album:
If I were a fish and you were a seashell
Would you marry me anyway?

Quirky, hilarious at some points, generally, just a nice little song. Conforming to the title of the album, I actually found myself singing along to it the first time I listened. Hehe, such a sweet song. Really lifts nearer to the end when the drums (I believe) kick in.

Meaning? Hmmm, I feel it's better to leave the song as it is, but from the first verse, I could assume that she's saying that her and someone else are quite different from each other, but she asks if he would be with her regardless of their differences.
The second verse ("if I were a bumblebee...") implies that not only are they different, but that they're detrimental to each other as well.
But the last line says that "if she were a fish and he were a puddle" and leaves it at that. In the second verse she says "would I drown in you...?"... argh, don't quite know where I'm going with this. >.<
Fish can't drown in puddles, can they?

Slowdive – Shine Lyrics 14 years ago
Dreampop at it's finest.

This track is simply something amazing. Unlike something by My Bloody Valentine (who comes at you like a wall of sound), Shine envelopes you in a dreamscape sonic-blanket of pure ecstasy. Rachel is almost ethereal in this song. I agree with Psychedelia, her vocals reach something truly heavenly. Almost completely drowned out by the thick layers of guitars and drums, they create an entirely new depth unheard of in any other song I have come across.

I don't really want to overly analyze the lyrics for fear of ruining the song next time I listen to it. I think the lyrics are better left as vague, subtle and obscure as the vocals themselves.

Shine is (simply and well put by Rut)

- better than sex.

Howling Bells – Ms Bell's Song Lyrics 14 years ago
Opinion?
Brilliant song. So very sad.

Interpretation?
At first it seems that it's about a person feeling jealousy or envy toward another.
But as I've looked into the lyrics more so, I've found it to be more about a person that has become so distant, isolated and cold - stoic, if you will - and hurting his/her partner or close friend.

She asks how her partner can be, seemingly, so strong and so happy "all the time". But then she asks "[what] holds [his] hand and at night?", perhaps she is speculating that he isn't as strong as he might seem. Whilst she is going through an extremely distressful time, her partner simply does not empathize with her. She cries, but it doesn't help, she laughs but it doesn't help, he remains as cold and distant as ever, whilst she has an emotional breakdown.

Just my interpretation.

BTW: The song is partially ruined by being joined with "The Radio Wars Theme". I think the Howling Bells should've separated the two. Ms Bell's Song is the only track on the album that really stands out for me. Their debut was much better in my opinion, but this is still an absolutely brilliant song.
