the "blow your brains out too" line is probably about kurt, but i think the song or at least that verse is about artists who copy other artists who came before them. hes mocking the post-grunge bands saying, ok since youve copied everything nirvanas ever done, now that hes dead why dont you put a shotgun in your mouth and be really authentic. real angry song |

its not an anti-religious song like youd think it was from the video, if anything its defending the image of Christ from people who abuse it. chris was pissed with celebrities like madonna who use Jesus on the cross in their videos, or try to emulate Jesus in some way to make themselves seem persecuted or like martyrs. chris does the Jesus Christ pose on stage during this song to be ironic, hes imitating and ridiculing the people who the song is about, who somehow think theyre godlike or special enough to compare themselves to God. |

this has gotta be one of the most disturbing songs ive ever heard, just because of the way he sings it. chris screeches out "remember i love you" in such an intense agonized way. especially the lines "you have a good day, its not your fault, i know it hurts" scare the hell out of me...what exactly isnt his fault that hes so guilty about? it sounds like a message from his girlfriend or whoever saying they still love him after some heinous thing hes done...its cool how they turned this into a scary emotional song from what was probably just an innocent note from kims girlfriend about something really unimportant |

its about a beautiful but shallow girl who needs to be a slut to validate her existence.
"treated like a queen she was on borrowed self-esteem":
everybodys spoiled her all her life because shes beautiful, she gets all her confidence and self-esteem from too many people drooling over her
"she would do her dance a painful masquerade, spin you into her web along her vain parade"
she flirts with guys and spins them into her web to fuck them. its a painful masquerade because shes going through all the motions for the sake of it, and all she wants is sex. her vain parade is just the line of guys she goes through to make herself feel beautiful and special.
"time crept up on her shes early gray"
shes now past her prime, aging and deteriorating possibly due to an std or drug abuse from a partying lifestyle. the lyrics are almost mocking her, since she took it for granted that she was hot and would always have men obsessing over her.
"her reflection looks concerned and flowers hit her grave"
it jumps forward, first to her looking in the mirror and realizing how fucked up she is now, and then to when shes dead. rather than flowers being placed on her grave, theyre hitting it, as if someones throwing them down angrily. nobody ever really loved her because all she had was physical attractiveness, and now that thats gone nobody cares anymore. this also ties up the flower theme of the song. the "flower" is also a metaphor for the girl herself for being beautiful but fragile and short-lived. as a side note flowers look like vaginas, so maybe thats where the title came from

i was a year old when this came out, the fact that it still gets played on the radio shows just how significant grunge was to all rock music in general. anyway i dont think its about drugs at all, the "black hole sun" makes me think of supernovas, how one day our sun is going to collapse and become a black hole, ending the world and "washing away the rain" of all our problems. hes just fed up with his life and the state of the world and hes praying for the apocalypse to come and destroy all the evil. |

yeah everybody else already got the meaning...and i love the really deep "FUCK YOU!" at the end. the vocals on the verse are actually pretty cool, with the one really deep layer and the high-pitched screaming under it. soundgarden did that in "beyond the wheel" too and kurt cobain did it a lot on the in utero album |

this song is so haunting and creepy, like "wet my bed" by stp but in a deeper more serious way. im assuming the title applebite is a reference to adam and eve, so i agree with the religious interpretations.
and to add to what other people said about listening to this while driving... get in a bathtub, fill it with warm water, and listen to the whole song with your eyes closed. its amazing. this works with all the other low-key songs on "down on the upside" and "jar of flies" by alice in chains. you discover the most amazing things when you have too much time on your hands. |

i think the lyrics are more sarcastic. its satirizing the mentality of war and bloody revolution by sarcastically saying to shoot people "until their minds are open". its a ridiculous and hypocritical line, its pointing out that you can shoot anyone you want to get your way, but violence doesnt truly solve anything. |

i think its about a dorky antisocial kid who gets rejected by people for being weird or antisocial. he fantasizes about aliens or whatever coming to take him away to a place where people are like him. i only think that because the line "dimension 7" sounds really sci-fi to me but it could mean death or the afterlife too |

i love this song. it has such a weird quality to it, its beautiful but somehow you know theres something really ugly and dark in the meaning. i think its about murder and rape is probably involved also because of the "he keeps you in a box by the bed" line...the whole thing just reminds me of manipulation and paranoia and evil. and im surprised this isnt on the soundtrack for that "jennifers body" movie, i assumed they based the title on the song |

its about how women supposedly have to prove their purity and innocence after being raped. if they arent completely virginally pure then they were just asking for it by being a slut. not every line in the song makes that much sense to me with that interpretation but i think courtneys said thats what its about. kurt actually sings on this song, you can hear him in the background on the "if you live through this" part but ive heard another version where his voice is a lot higher in the mix and its easier to hear. awesome song and its cool that kurt had a part in it |
