Mumford & Sons – Awake My Soul Lyrics 15 years ago
Well, both bands have their own signature. For me, M&S are the band I listen to when I want to bring some light and warm to my cold autumn/winter days. They're really optimistic for that purpose. NatW are a band I listen to to meditate in solitude and melancholy during that time of the year where winter slowly becomes spring. Although I find both bands highly spiritual.

Editors – Walk the Fleet Road Lyrics 15 years ago
Ok, I recently found out an interview where Tom Smith said this song was inspired by his girlfriend telling him not to take things too seriously and not to worry about everything constantly. He's admitted to be the worrying kind of person, someone who usually sees the glass half empty and who can get very anxious about tiny things. I think this song represents him trying to find peace by walking the way to home, to the people he loves (Fleet Road is a real street in London).

White Lies – Taxidermy Lyrics 15 years ago
From an article about White Lies lyrics:

"Dark, cinematic tales of murder, madness, revenge, loss and love from beyond the grave; as we speak he [Charles Cave] is working on a piece concerning a girl who hates her parents so much that, to get their revenge on her, they include a clause in their will forcing her to have them stuffed and mounted in her front room so she has to look at them every day."

Manic Street Preachers – Ballad Of The Bangkok Novotel Lyrics 15 years ago
I found it as a b-side in the single "Found That Soul" along with other b-side, "Locust Valley". I think either of these are also b-sides for the "So Why So Sad" single.

"I wanted to tell you, I wanted to say I'm not doing okay"

That verse hits you like a slap on the face. Absolute, pure emotion.

Editors – For The Money Lyrics 15 years ago
These are in my opinion some of the best lyrics Tom Smith has ever written. The main meaning is pretty obvious: about how greed is one of humankind's greatest failures and how people can do horrible things for money. But the best thing is all the images he pictures to represent it.

"A cat in a bag meets the undertow"
You need to get rid of the cat, there's nobody you can give it to, so you put the animal in a plastic bag and throw it to the river or sea until it drowns. Really cruel, but happens often. Maybe it represents the feeling of helplessness and desperation while drowning. The topic of cruelty towards animals has started to appear on Editors lyrics lately, probably because they're becoming more environmental aware.

"Who's gonna make us better
If we won't believe there are things left to say?"
Maybe about how most people think there is nothing we can do to solve the problems in this world so they just accept it and don't try to make things better.

"Put us to bed at the end of the day"
About places and people that make us feel safe. Maybe also about how we go about our daily life completely unaware of what's going on in the world, and at the end of the day you just fall asleep without feeling any guilt or remorse.

"Here's where the wind leaves its mark across your face"
I have no idea of what this means. But it's one of those verses that get stuck in your head and haunt you forever.

Editors – Walk the Fleet Road Lyrics 16 years ago
It's interesting how all closing tracks from each record follow some kind of parallelism.

-"Distance" is a farewell song, but more like a "see you soon/ until we meet again" song. The conclusion after recording their first album and finally becoming a recognized band, becoming serious musicians, steppping into an unknown world that has plenty of opportunities for them and being a bit scared but at the same time excited of what the future will bring. There's a road ahead of them and they're starting the journey just now. First step towards maturity.

-"Well Worn Hand" is the realization of death and feeling completely helpless about it. It's like being at stalemate, like losing all hope in the middle of the journey and not being sure if it's worth it anymore. You have to find the strength and courage to get over it and move on. Second step towards maturity.

-"Walk The Fleet Road": 'The hospital looms, as we walk Fleet Road'. That image insinuates that they've arrived at the end of the road, like they've finally reached a stage they were aiming for, wether as musicians or as people. 'Hold your tongue, swallow your venom, you're too young, hold your tongue' When you are young, you have a lot of rage inside you and you're angry at the world, but when you grow older you learn to overcome those feelings and find peace of mind. So, they've finally reached maturity and now they're able to confront all challenges of life.

Or maybe they just like to finish their albums with slow songs and I'm overanalyzing it. Whatever.

Editors – Bricks and Mortar Lyrics 16 years ago
First, the lyrics are wrong (like most lyrics from ILAOTE because they were posted before the album was even released) Whoever is resposible of this, please correct them.

I think this song is kind of nostalgic. About doing what you're told to do and growing up. A young boy is trained to be a soldier and has to leave his home and loved ones behind to follow the call of duty.

"I am the coast defence, I am the city wall, stealing pounds and pence from you all" The taxes we pay so the government protect us from outer menaces?

"Pour salt water on the wound" Nothing specific, maybe the idea of resentment and old scars that don't heal, like past traumas or bad memories.

"This home is more than bricks and mortar" Um, maybe it means that sometimes things -or people- are more deep and complex than they look on the outside.

Amy Macdonald – Barrowland Ballroom Lyrics 16 years ago
Lyrics from Amy Macdonald's official website:

Oh the lights outside they're as bright as the sun
They're much brighter than anyone.
Oh the girls in the Queue yes they're waiting for you
Well they're waiting for their song to be sung.

And when the night turns to day and all the people go away
It's not the same, tell me who's to blame?
And when the stars shine so bright on the cold December night
I wish that I was on that stage

Oh wont you take a ride with me
through the Barrowland history
and Ill sing you a song or two
People they may stop and stare but baby I, I just dont care it's
it's only me and you.
And the drink and dance and drugs you know
it's all part of the show we go to
Maybe I should tell you.
That people they may stop and stare but baby I, I just dont care
tonight, it's only me and you.

Oh nothing beats the feeling of the high Barrowland ceiling
When the band starts to play.
Wont you buy me a drink and Ill tell her what I think
If she gets in my way

And when the night turns to day and all the people go away
It's not the same, tell me who's to blame?
And when the stars shine so bright on the cold December night
I wish that I was on that stage

Chorus

And when the night turns to day
And the lights they fade away
I wish that life and love would pass me by
And when the band stops a song because there's something going on
Well there is magic in the air I swear.
And I wish that I saw Bowie, playing on that stage
I wish that I saw something, to make me come of age.

Chorus

I can't stop dancing to this song!

The Maccabees – Spanishish Lyrics 16 years ago
Maybe he had a bad experience and he was in a really bad mood when he wrote this. You see, I'm Spanish and I can assure you that most people here have a really crappy knowledge of the English language (or no knowledge at all) But we're usually friendly and warm with tourists (hell, a good percentage of our economy depends on them)

But they'd better not play this song when they come to Madrid supporting Editors.

Editors – You Don't Know Love Lyrics 16 years ago
I think it's obvious that this song has a political subtext like "Eat Raw Meat". By the way, the lyrics from the booklet are different: it's "a panther's eyes as he PRAYS on fear", "the more you ran, love got further away", "one look and I saw inside"... Well just read the damn booklet that comes with the CD and stop uploading wrong lyrics.

Maybe it's about a spy whose job forces him to lie, cheat, fake, pretend, etc. He has to push his family and friends away to keep them from harm. He does things that he feels are wrong but he ignores his conscience and just obeys orders blindly. Eventually, he becomes some kind of robot who can't feel anything.

The "headlights in your rear view mirror" line gives me a cinematographic image of him runnig away from everything in his car, with other agents chasing him in the dark. Maybe he has realized that he doesn't want to be a spy anymore, but that's not a kind of job one can quit easily... Very James Bond-like, anyway.

Editors – No Sound But the Wind Lyrics 16 years ago
I agree with you entirely. I also prefer the piano, but they completely killed the lyrics in the new version. They even removed the "no sound but the wind" line, for god's sake! Movie or not, there was no need to cut that verse.

Editors – Colours Lyrics 16 years ago
My favourite b-side by far. Tom says so much in so few words. When you meet someone really special, someone who is so kind and selfless and loyal that you feel like they're too good for you. You almost adore them like a deity, as if they were miles above you. I've had a couple of friends like that, and I respected them so much that when I thought of all the times I had been mean or selfish while they were always ready to give you a hand I realized that they were much better people than I was, and it made me feel worthless in comparision. But it's not envy at all. More like adoration, as I said. And you want to tell them how much they mean to you, to tell them that you'd do anything for them, but you never get the chance.

I'm not sure if I'm making any sense. But that's the way I feel when I hear the song.

Editors – No Sound But the Wind Lyrics 16 years ago
Ok then. Before any more twilight fans who don't even know who Editors are keep spamming this page because they feel so clever, let me get this straight: YES, WE KNOW THESE ARE NOT THE LYRICS FROM THE NEW MOON SOUNDTRACK. Now let me explain.

This is the ORIGINAL, LIVE version of the song, played in the summer of 2008 at Paredes de Coura (Portugal) This song was inspired directly by the book "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy. Is a post-apocalyptic novel in which a father and his son travel along a road surviving after what looks a nuclear disaster. The ashes surround everything and the dust is so dense the sunlight can't pass through it. The few human survivors succumb to primary instincts such as cannibalism. But it's also a touching and deeply emotional book because of the relationship between father and son. Like a tiny ray of light in the middle of hell. Tom Smith said that he read the book around the time he found out he was going to be a father himself, so the book affected him in a special way.

And, for reasons I can't quite understand, they accepted to include this song in the New Moon soundtrack. But as you can see, the lyrics didn't fit, so they were asked by movie producers to change them *cough*damngreedymorons*cough* Anyway, the new version is still beautiful (because everything Editors do always is). Just too much of a song for such a crap movie.
