Bricks and Mortar Lyrics

No one understands, the way you found your God,
there's a bullet in your hands,
Give a dog a bone, feed him for the day,
and teach him how to kill, then...
I am the posted fence, I am the city wall,
stealing pounds and pence - from you all.
Still no one understands, the way you found your God,
there's a bullet in your hands.

Pour salt water on the wound,
pour salt water on the wound,
this home is more than Bricks and Mortar,
pour salt water on the wound.

When the boys told you, you'll have the arms of a soldier,
those arms will never hold her again.
It's just like I told you, when the boys told you,
he's gonna be a soldier for them!

Pour salt water on the wound,
pour salt water on the wound,
this home is more than Bricks and Mortar,
pour salt water on the wound.

I hope life is good for you.
I hope life is good for you.
I hope life is good for you,
I hope life is good for you aaaaaaaaaaaah.

To me this song is about the futility with the war on terrorism. Here is my reasoning:

No one understands, the way you found your God, there's a bullet in your hands

This is referring to Muslim extremists and how most of the world find it hard to understand how they can use terrorism to make people believe in their faith, and how can Violence and Religion can be apart of the same organization. Religion should be a thing of forgiveness and love!

Give a dog a bone, feed him for the day, and teach him how to kill, then...

This is referring to the USA/ CIA providing extremists ie Al-Qaeda with the training and equipment to wage terrorist based wars.

I am the coast defence, I am the city wall, stealing pounds and pence - from you all.

This is talking about how the USA pretends to be the good guys by going in and rebuilding the countries they've destroyed but stealing all their natural resources at the same time i.e. Oil

pour salt water on the wound, this home is more than Bricks and Mortar,

Pour salt water on the wound to me means making something that is bad worse. The US is trying to fix things but only making it worse for the countries that they occupy. They're literally leveling cities with bombs and killing many civilians in the process. The western world is turning a blind eye to most of this because its not really close to home.

'This home is more than bricks and mortar' is referring to the families that have their homes destroyed. They're more than just buildings, these are homes with stories and families like yours and mine.

When the boys told you, you'll have the arms of a soldier, those arms will never hold her again. It's just like I told you, when the boys told you, he's gonna be a soldier for them!

To me this verse is referring to suicide bombers who are promised eternal life etc But really they are just going to lose their own lives and lose the ones they love.

I hope life is good for you.

This last verse is saying that he hopes one day things will change, that we will end this pointless war and that we all come to love and understand one another better.

I couldn't have said it better myself. This is the meaning I took from the song.

How come nobody has reacted on this magnificent song?!

First, the lyrics are wrong (like most lyrics from ILAOTE because they were posted before the album was even released) Whoever is resposible of this, please correct them.

I think this song is kind of nostalgic. About doing what you're told to do and growing up. A young boy is trained to be a soldier and has to leave his home and loved ones behind to follow the call of duty.

"I am the coast defence, I am the city wall, stealing pounds and pence from you all" The taxes we pay so the government protect us from outer menaces?

"Pour salt water on the wound" Nothing specific, maybe the idea of resentment and old scars that don't heal, like past traumas or bad memories.

"This home is more than bricks and mortar" Um, maybe it means that sometimes things -or people- are more deep and complex than they look on the outside.

Just like to point out that its "When the boy is older" not "When the boy has told you", that would make no sense

From the cd's booklet;

No one understands, the way you found your God, there’s a bullet in your hand Give a dog a bone, he’ll eat for the day, but teach him how to kill then I am the coast defence, I am the city wall, stealing pounds and pence from you all Still no one understands, the way you found your God, there’s a bullet in your hand

Pour salt water on the wound Pour salt water on the wound This home is more than bricks and mortar Pour salt water on the wound aaaaaaah

When the boy’s older, he’ll have the arms of a soldier, those arms will never hold her again It’s just like I told you, when the boy’s older, he’s gonna be a soldier for them

Pour salt water on the wound Pour salt water on the wound This home is more than bricks and mortar Pour salt water on the wound aaaah

I hope life is good for you I hope life is good for you I hope life is good for you I hope life is good for you aaaaaaaaaah
