| Tori Amos – Taxi Ride Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| Yes-fag could mean cigarette. But you would be a fool to think that’s what she meant in this context. It’s pretty obvious she was singing about dead gay person. | |
| Big Country – In A Big Country Lyrics | 15 years ago |
It’s a great song. Love the bag pipe guitar. Lyric too of course. I love the first “shah!”shouts he gives at the beginning.. For me, that shout alone contains a lot of Celtic spirit as much as any lyric or bag pipes. I don’t have a drop of Celtic blood in me but I respect their spirit. |

| Concrete Blonde – Tomorrow, Wendy (Andy Prieboy cover) Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| I have nothing against Religions by the way. I just thought I might point that out in case you guys get the wrong idea. | |
| Concrete Blonde – Tomorrow, Wendy (Andy Prieboy cover) Lyrics | 15 years ago |
gordtaylor -To me, the lyric ( not necessary the writer) is written from Aethist’s point of view. I think it’s obvious. That doesn’t mean Johnette Napolitano is Aethist, although I think it’s likely that she is because she also wrote the song called “God is a bullet” Just because she references the things in Bible doesn’t she believes in it. The song clearly expresses the anger toward God. |

| The Cardigans – Erase/Rewind Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I love the dark tone of this song. When I first I heard this song, I really thought it was a departure from their previous work up to that point. I mean , I think they had some dark lyrics but they always had light melody. This atmosphere in this song actually fits the lyrics. |
| Morrissey – My Love Life Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I always thought he was saying “I give up”. Anyway, great song. I never knew song could be so powerful using just few words/vocaburary I guess it’s the melody and which words you chose. |
| Nada Surf – Always Love Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Fearabbit- I don’t think the writer is saying “I know that theoretically it's the best thing to do, but I just can't seem to do it. I cannot listen to that voice, but that's not because I think it is wrong, but because I lack the ability to become what that voice tells me to be,” as you say. I think he is saying “I’ve been stupid not to listen to my inner voice. I’m going to change that from now on.” The writer says “I’ve been held back by something.”..In the context of this song, the writer admits that he has been held back by something (hate) but now, he is determined to change that. |

| Depeche Mode – Blasphemous Rumours Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Allow me to respond. If you have read my previous comments, you would know that I am an atheist. Just because I am an atheist does not make me “anti-Christian.” So when you say “A question for anti-Christ’s or atheists”, you can see that it would annoy me since I have nothing against Christianity or any other religion but you are assuming that I am against Christianity even though I am not. That’s almost like saying all Christians are anti-Muslim or anti-Buddhists. I’m sure you aren’t. But you are assuming just because I fit into a certain category, I am against other group. That is just wrong. As for your question about whether I have read Bible as an adult. The answer is no and I am not interested in it. This does not mean that I am “anti-Christian” however. I obviously know something about Bible from living in the 21st Century with all these information but I simply am not interested in reading the actual texts. You have to understand, there are MANY other religion besides Christianity. If I ask you “Have you read BOOK X that talk about this religion Z?” ..And if you say “no,” that does not make you anti-Z now does it? However, if I DO decide to read Bible (which is unlikely), I feel it’s only fair that I also look into OTHER religions as well to get more balanced views. |

| Bruce Cockburn – Lovers in a Dangerous Time Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Such a beautiful song. From the sound and lyrics of the whole album, it conjured up the scenes in war-torn South America. Actually I just looked at Wikipedia of the album “Stealing Fire” and the song is based on Bruce’s trip to Central America so I was not too far off. If nothing else, this song is gold with the great lines such as: “These fragile bodies of touch and taste this vibrant skin, this hair like lace Spirits open to the thrust of grace Never a breath you can afford to waste” ..and of course “got to kick at the darkness till it bleeds daylight" |
| Everclear – White Men In Black Suits Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I don't think this song is about abuse at all. The narrator clearly loves this girl and the line “I kiss the ring you gave me then I swing with all my might” comes right after “I still see those scary guys when I am all alone at night.” So he is clearly “swinging” against those “scary guys,”either figuratively or literally. | |
| Collective Soul – The World I Know Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Really? Because I certainly don’t see a Christian meaning in these songs. You can probably relate this lyric to other religions besides Christianity if you really wanted to. I guess each listener can interpret these songs in their own way. I’m sure that’s what Ed would have wanted. I understand that Ed’s father is a preacher/priest and lot of their lyrics are influenced by it only because Ed grew up with it but he wrote these songs so that non-Christians, or even atheists can relate to it. I admit I’m an atheist but this song still touched me. For me, this song was about a man finding inner peace and inner strength and by going through bad moments in his/her life. |
| Sixpence None the Richer – Tension Is a Passing Note Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I usually hate it when someone thinks every song is about "relationship" but I think this song IS about relationship in this case. To me, I think its talking about all the usual trials that relationships (couples/friends/band,etc), like arguments and fights. And the song is about embracing those things. I think its saying by going through all of those experience, and if relationship can last through them, then even those bad moments can be embraced when you are looking back on it. |
| Concrete Blonde – Tomorrow, Wendy (Andy Prieboy cover) Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Well, I think it's possible to be an atheist and still be mad at the idea of a God in music. You can't do that kind of thing when you are writing serious essays but in art you can, I think you can. You can still talk about the concept of God but still not believe in it. In this case, the narrator is angry at the society that believes in God and the idea of God. That doesn't necessary mean the narrator believes in God. Either way, it's a good song. |
| Billy Joel – The Downeaster 'Alexa' Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I'd like to add that melody is also amazing and it matches the lyric very well. Like if Billy was just humming the song along with the background music, you can almost tell what the song is about. Almost. It's that good. If you close your eyes, you can almost see fishermen on ships. | |
| Tracy Chapman – Talkin’ ‘Bout A Revolution Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Well, it's obvious what the song is about. But her voice sounds so sad that it makes me feel like the narrator knows deep inside that it's all futile. You can feel the narrator's frustration and anger. Those emotions are expressed very well, but at the same time it sounds kind of fragile. | |
| Collective Soul – Forgiveness Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I'm 88% sure that most of the songs on Disciplined Breakdown is about the band's strained relationship with their manager. So I have no doubt that this song is no different. It IS about "relationship" but not the boy/girl relationship that you guys are thinking about. Though it can easily be taken that way and there is nothing wrong with you if you think that way. |
| Sting – Shape Of My Heart Lyrics | 16 years ago |
It just amazes me that Sting can come up with lyrics like this, using cards as a metaphore : spades (sword),clubs (weapons), diamond (money),heart ( love). I mean, it's possible that someone else came up with concept before but who besides Sting can express that in the song and make it work? We've seen a lot of metaphores like moon, rivers, highway, sky, etc, but cards??? Simply amazing. |
| Sting – Why Should I Cry For You? Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This song is most definitely about his father like most of you said already. It's a very beautiful and magestic song in terms of lyric and music. You can just picuture Sting sitting in the boat somewhere in the ocean. And oh yeah, it has to be at night because he is looking at stars. If Soul Cages was affected by the death of his father, I think Nothing like the Sun was affected by the death of his mother. I can't remember where but I have read that somewhere. Sound-wise, Soul Cage sounds more "stoic" and "manly" whereas Nothing Like the Sun feels more "round" and "feminine." That's how I felt anyway. Such a tragedy but at least he has a talent to channel those emotions into beautiful songs. |
| Sting – Island Of Souls Lyrics | 16 years ago |
What a moody song!! Bagpipes at the intro sets the tone of the song and lyric paints a vivid picture. Not exactly a radio-friendly catcy song but excellent story telling in the back ground of a coastal town in England. And excellent intro to the album. |
| Depeche Mode – Personal Jesus Lyrics | 16 years ago |
jsibley isn’t making any sense. Let’s go back to discussing the song. Jsible, we are discussing the lyrical content of the song. We are not discussing Christianity here. You also realize that internet can be utilized from various countries. When you say “in this country,” I assume you mean USA but also know that there are people from other countries reading and commenting this. No one is bashing Christianity here. At least I’m not. Maybe you should try reading little bit more instead of reacting in knee-jerk fashion at the mere mention of the word “Christianity.” |

| Del Amitri – Always The Last To Know Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This is simply a good song. There's nothing flashy about its sounds or lyrics but I think it is good in its own way. Now what I want to know is how come there's no Stone Cold Sober posted!!??? There's a lot to be discussed in terms of lyric in that song!! Someone post that already!! |
| 20 Fingers – Short Dick Man Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I don't get it. What is she trying to say? I'm sure there's a deep philosophical meaning behind these lyrics. I think it involves something about the universe and existentialism. |
| Def Leppard – Pour Some Sugar On Me Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This is an awesome song but you gotta admit, the lyric is kind of crap lol. If you take away the music and just read the lyric, it makes you laugh lol. But hey, put together with guitars, bass, and drum, its a kick ass song!! It's not meant to be deep meaningful song. It's just a "let's just fuck" kind of song. And we need those songs just as much as lyrical songs with deep meanings. |
| R.E.M. – Shiny Happy People Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I love this song for the mandolin alone!!!! When I first heard this song , I thought it was supposed to be a happy feel good song. I got older now and I listen to this song and it sounds UNNATURALY happy it's almost scary.. Like it's about being ridiculously happy because he/she is high. |
| Barenaked Ladies – Pinch Me Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I agree with what 90 % of you here said : The song is definitely about the apathy in going over routine in suburbia and feeling slightly depressed. I want to add one thing. I think the song ended kind of positive way with the line : I could leave but I'll just stay All my stuff's here anyway I'm probably affected by the music video but that line there, seems to say " You know, my life sucks but I'll make a best of it." Like, the guy in the song knows he's not going to make a dramatic change in his life but he's coming to term with his life and learning accept his lot and try to make a best of it. |
| Depeche Mode – Never Let Me Down Again Lyrics | 16 years ago |
"As long as I remember who's wearing the trousers " It seems like the main character in song is struggling for the control. Who has the control? Is the main character in the song or his "best friend?" I think the "best friend" is a drug. |
| Depeche Mode – Blasphemous Rumours Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I am an atheist myself and I believe this song is written from atheist's perspective. That doesn't mean that all or any of the members of DM are atheist by any means. And it doesn't mean that you have to disown your religion just because you like this song. You can keep whatever religion you have and you can disagree with DM's ( or I should say atheist in this song) view but you can still admire the song. It may be possible that all of the members are very devoted to God, but just wrote the song from atheist's perspective to paint a painful picture. |
| Ace of Base – Adventures In Paradise Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Well as far as lyric goes, its not deep or meaningfull or anything. It's just one of those feel-good-songs. That doesn't mean it's a bad song though. It's not meant to be deep or heartfelt or harrowing or "real". It's just a fun song. As far as melody goes, it's damn catchy!! |

| Counting Crows – Mrs. Potter's Lullaby Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| If what pennpixel says is true..then this song has GOT to be about her right | |
| Counting Crows – Anna Begins Lyrics | 16 years ago |
She's talking in her sleep It's keeping me awake and Anna begins to toss and turn And every word is nonsense but I understand and Oh lord, I'm not ready for this sort of thing I like this part where the song kicks it up a notch and crescendos with backing vocals and everything and it picks it up even more when in : Her kindness bangs a gong It's moving me along and Anna begins to fade away It's chasing me away She disappears and Oh lord, I'm not ready for this sort of thing |

| U2 – Tryin' To Throw Your Arms Around The World Lyrics | 16 years ago |
"Throwing your arms around the world." <---Seems like the lyric is about the band itself. U2 was famous for writing political songs doing all of these world-saving-charity. But maybe Bono or other members of the band, has neglected their family or significan other in the process and Bono has realized that they can't just go around "saving the world"(Throwing your arms around the world) |
| U2 – Tryin' To Throw Your Arms Around The World Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I think they don't need women when they are "trying to throw your arms around the world." Otherwise, yes, men needs women. |
| K's Choice – Not An Addict Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| You guys DO notice that there's "Not an Addict" thread and this one, which is "I'm not an addict." I think the first one is right. | |
| K's Choice – Almost Happy Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I don't necessary think this song has to be about romantic relationship. It could be about her friend, who seems to bit depressed but she can't figure out why and this friend doesn't let her in on her secret. The friend keeps everything to himself/herself and never really opens up about what is bothering him/her. | |
| Collective Soul – Why - Part 2 Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I have no idea why it's part2. Perhaps its a 2nd version of the same song? Perhaps there is Why part 1 somewhere but just not recorded. | |
| Depeche Mode – Personal Jesus Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Also, I think this is one of the first albums they started to use live instruments like guitars. I like their thinking-out-side-the-box approach. Although guitar sounds can be simulated with keyboards.... |
| Death Cab for Cutie – Title and Registration Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I always love a band that can express sadness without overdoing it and be subtle about it. Although I think in this case, the feeling is "melancholy" more than sadness. |
| Death Cab for Cutie – Marching Bands of Manhattan Lyrics | 16 years ago |
The rhythm of this song is very hypnotic and it is very healing when you combine with the lyric. |
| Pearl Jam – Nothingman Lyrics | 16 years ago |
MouthForWar20 - how about a line "Future's above...but in the past he's slow and sinking.." You can almost picture a guy sinking in the quick sand(past) but trying desperately to reach out above (future.) I agree this song is probably about broken relationship but I also get the feeling that there's also alcohol and/or drugs involved. Or maybe a guy is in gang. Anyway I don't think "a guy" in the song is normal 9-5 working suit wearing type. Also, even though this song never mentions this, I pictured a guy walking in a desolate field, with no food,no home,no one to help, and he staggers and falls down. This guy is about to die. And its all he's fault. That's the mental imagery I got anyway. |
| Billy Joel – The Downeaster 'Alexa' Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I don't know why this song didn't get popular as "We didn't start the fire". It's as haunting as Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car." | |
| Roxette – Dressed For Success Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I still think this song IS about sex.Or is about going to get sex anyway. She's worried about what her mother/father/brother say..and she says "another town where I get close to the bone." "Get dressed for success shaping it up for your love yea yea yea." It sounds like she's dressing to go to club so she can get laid. |
| Eve 6 – Promise Lyrics | 16 years ago |
"Why you gotta keep the fan on high when it's cold outside?" I like this song for this line alone. Why be mean when there's so much meanness in this world already? |
| The Cowboy Junkies – A common disaster Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This lyric scares me in that woman in this song sounds like she just snapped and is about to do something crazy. And that's what I thought this song was about. "I'm going to hell, you are coming with me" kind of song. |
| The Cowboy Junkies – Sweet Jane Lyrics | 16 years ago |
well I know I'm supposed to mention about lyric and not the sound but the sound is also amazing. This is as low-fi as you can get without being lame. I like the fact that restrained instrumental really brings up Margo's voice. And even though the guitars, bass, and drums are restrained, they are still making statement in their own way. |
| The Cowboy Junkies – Sun comes up, it's tuesday morning Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Its a break up song but the line "She's got a black eye this morning, `Jen how'd ya get it?' she says, `Last night, Bobby got a little bit out of hand' is disturbing. The way she casually mentions it makes it even more disturbing. |
| Sting – I'm So Happy I Can't Stop Crying Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| "I'm laughing through my tears"--> this line is very poignant. Sometimes, your life is so screwed up you can't help but laugh while crying. | |
| Sting – I'm So Happy I Can't Stop Crying Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Well it's obviously about divorce. But I somehow see a small ray of hope within that song. | |
| Depeche Mode – Personal Jesus Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Well there's a lot of ways to interpret this song but I certainly hope people "get" the dark edge in this song. I hope they see that this song is not about Christianity. If it IS about religion, it's certainly not painting a positive picture, given its dark lyric and sound. It's not meant to make religion positive. It could be about tele evangelism like someone said in earlier page, which is not painting religion in the positive light. At least not for me. It sounds like its about dark, unhealthy obsession that person might have towards another person. |
| Collective Soul – In Between Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This is one of the quieter song in the album that could be overlooked behind more "flashy" songs like "Precious Declaration" and "Listen". For me, its one of the best song in that album. You could say it's a hidden gem. I like the restrained quality of the sound and its' subtleness. I think this is just one of the many songs in that album about troubled relationship he had with the band's manager. |
| Collective Soul – The World I Know Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Well the video is only one interpretation of the song but I think it does a pretty good job. Its very emotionally "healing" for me to watch that video. Sometimes I just google that video to watch so that I can cry and remove some tensions in my body. |
