Guided by Voices – Smothered In Hugs Lyrics 12 years ago
I know that Robert Pollard was a teacher until sometime before this album came out, and he has used themes from that before ("Gold Star For Robot Boy") so I assume it's at least a bit influenced by that. Here's my personal interpretation:
This new student comes who has issues like depression, but he's never given help for it because everyone else is wrapped up in their own business ("the sunshine fund was low, we couldn't greet you with a simple hello") - "The watchers of the flood", the faculty watching his descent, are too busy with their own lives than to help this kid out.
The narrator is the only one who understands ("But I believe you"). He wants to hear from this kid and try to help him. They want to go to "higher windows", being higher standards of living.
Despite his help, the kid commits suicide in the winter ("In the winter that you left"), but no one outside his immediate circle really hears about it until later ("The word got out, it was really such a pity").
The school decides not to even acknowledge his passing ("the judges and the saints...decided you should be left out"). And now the narrator's wracked with the guilt of not having saved him from his school and himself.
That's just what I came up with - probably wrong, but the great thing about GBV lyrics is that you can make them be about anything, really.

R.E.M. – We All Go Back To Where We Belong Lyrics 12 years ago
Very fitting as their final single - it's a nice coda to one of the greatest bands of all time.
Oh, and if anyone could figure out those lyrics I couldn't hear, that'd be great.

Weird, apparently "We are not authorized to display these lyrics." It's not like it's a leak or anything, it was in Rolling Stone.

Thanks for the corrections! Sometimes he just went too fast for me to really make out.

LCD Soundsystem – Dance Yrself Clean Lyrics 14 years ago
I think the song is about the end of the narrator's prime.
The music scene has been washed up, or at least, for his age group.
He and others like him still try to keep it alive, but in the face of the younger generation, they're not succeeding.
"We should try a little harder
In the tedious march of the few
Every day's a different warning
There's a part of me hoping it's true"
He thinks that they should try to continue keeping their music alive, despite the fact that most of his peers have moved on.
However, there's a part of him that wants to settle down.
One of LCD Soundsystem's constant themes is the music "scene", and the cycles it has.
The narrator has to deal with being at the tail end of his cycle.

Pavement – Cut Your Hair Lyrics 14 years ago
I agree with pretty much all of the interpretations so far.

"darlin' don't you go and cut your hair
do you think it's gonna make him change?"

It's basically saying to don't change for the record company, it's not they're going to change and treat you any better.

Coldplay – Sparks Lyrics 14 years ago
I love the way the song sounds, very mellow.
Now then, let's get to the interpretation:

"Did I drive you away?"
"I know what you'll say"
"You say, "Oh, sing one we know"
Most, if not all, songs on this album are about love, so that gives an idea to the theme.
A relationship is breaking apart, but his partner still stays with him in order to have something stable in her life.
The "one" she wants him to sing is the way things were before the dissolution of the relationship.

"But I promise you this
I'll always look out for you
That's what I'll do"

However, he can tell that she's not exactly satisfied with the relationship; she's just trying to keep things as they were.
He feels her pain, but promises her that whatever happens, he'll look out for her.

"My heart is yours
It's you that I hold on to
That's what I do"

He's also holding onto her because she has his heart and he has hers.
It reminds me of the movie "Annie Hall", and how the main character justifies relationships by saying (I'm paraphrasing here) "They're crazy and irrational, but some of us need the eggs"

"And I know I was wrong
But I won't let you down
(Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, yeah I will, yes I will)"

He realizes that he didn't make the best decisions, but he's not just going to let her down after the relationship ended.
Despite these feelings, he is still unsure of his commitment and responsibility to her.

"Yeah I saw sparks"

Yet, he still feels they can work it out, the sparks being romantic attraction.
Perhaps their love isn't dead after all?
Either way, this is a really good, underrated Coldplay song.

R.E.M. – Pop Song 89 Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is great!
It works really well as an attack against pop music, but I came up with an alternate interpretation a bit more personal.
Anyway, I believe the song is about a guy who's sweet yet not very bright social skills-wise.
The lyrics explain his attempts to strike up a conversation:
"Should we talk about the weather/government?"
Unfortunately, it still doesn't come out quite right, as evidenced by the amount of time he says "Hi."

Koop – Summer Sun Lyrics 14 years ago
The song is about this woman who has never fallen hard in love until now.
The summer sun could be two things:
1. The joyous mood this new love brings.
2. The glow of nostalgia.
The reason for no. 2 is that this could have been narrated from the view of someone's who reminiscing over a past love.

Koop – Waltz for Koop Lyrics 14 years ago
Huh. I'll take a crack at it.
I think the song is about a couple of DJ's, but it's open to interpretation.
"We're always on the run from the sun"
If the sun is meant to be taken literally, then they're always in the nightclubs, doing what they do best.
"You say our job is done, the battle is won. But we've only just begun."
One of them feels proud of their accomplishments and doesn't feel the need to try to innovate.
The narrator, however, feels that they're only scratching the surface of music.
The title, "Waltz for Koop", could mean that the song is basically their mission statement.
They're digging deeper into music in order to make it better (They think).
