I can't believe no one has commented on this song yet! Great lyrics, great music (I love the interplay of the
background vocals and the horns/saxophones). But this song paints such a wonderful, almost tragic picture of a
child whose parents are very different from each other, and don't see eye to eye on how to raise their daughter, and what is best for her. |

I always heard this song as being about the different roles of a man and woman in a relationship ("old man" isn't always a father). A bit of an old-fashioned tale about a slightly misogynistic man who does not want his woman to be too free. He (the butterfly) keeps her (the dog) down while he is free to fly and soar around. He is the social one, popular at the office and at the pub after work, while she is to stay home and keep their house. All she can do is laugh it off. |

This song does bear similarities to "Soul of the Sea," but I think it is far more adventurous, both harmonically and rhythmically. That intro guitar part is very unique- might be some kind of alternate tuning. Ann Wilson also really pushes the envelope here vocally. Amazing!
A mistral wind is a strong, cold, dry wind that is caused by an area of high pressure in the Atlantic between Spain and France. The effects of the wind seem to center in and around France, and causes storms in the Mediterranean. It seems that the singer is comparing herself to a sailing vessel and the mistral wind to her lover, who fills her sails (gives her strength/energy/power), but also causes her to lose control of herself, and lose her way. She is unable to steer herself, perhaps making bad decisions. |

soberloki, self-denial is a good way to keep yourself alive! Always giving in to our inner desires leads us down the road to debt, disease, depression, and death. |
