That Voice Again Lyrics

I want to be with you
I want to be clear
but each time I try
it's the voice I hear
I hear that voice again

I'm listening to the conversation
judge and jury in my head
it's colouring everything
all we did and said
and still I head that sharp tongue talking
talking tangled words
I can sense the danger
just listen to the wind

I want you close I want you near
I can't help but listen
but I don't want to hear
hear that voice again

I want to be with you
I want to be clear
but each time I try
it's the voice I hear
I hear that voice again

I'm hearing right and wrong so clearly
there must be more than this
it's only in uncertainty
that we're naked and alive
I hear it through the rattle of a streetcar
hear it through the things you said
I can get so scared
listen to the wind

I want you close I want you near
I can't help but listen
but I don't want to hear
hear that voice again

what I carry in my heart
brings us so close or so far apart
only love can make love

I want you close I want you near
I can't help but listen
but I don't want to hear
I hear that voice again

I want to be with you
I want to be clear
but each time I try
it's the voice I hear
I hear that voice again

"it's only in uncertainty that we're naked and alive" possibly the most prescient line in music history. Every time I get worried about taking risks I think of this line.

This song is about the battle that takes place daily between the heart and mind. Truly amazing.

Absolutely. It's a beautiful line.

The singer wants, but his inner (and perhaps outer) voices insist he can't have. Still, that doesn't stop the wanting.

Self-denial, it's a terrible thing.

soberloki, self-denial is a good way to keep yourself alive! Always giving in to our inner desires leads us down the road to debt, disease, depression, and death.

drgrillo, I used to have that exact same opinion during a time in my life where I had no friends - I denied myself friends, and that allowed me to agree with that. But now in college I have made so many friends and for the first time have been able to almost be myself in front of others and I start to wonder whether human existence is more important than human emotion.

Conscience. You can only go on for so long with your brain having a war with itself...usually it's better to go with what your conscience says though.

I enjoy the previous interpretations of this song and agree with them in part. There's a few things I wanted to point out. The first is that I read that this song is a reflection of Gabriel's upbringing and having judgmental parents. The other point is that a person can have 2 different viewpoints of a situation at the same time. It's not necessarily one is the head and one is the heart (emotion). Being in the legal profession for over 20 years, there isn't much emotion but the same set of facts can take on 2 different, 3, 4 or more different viewpoints relating to the same situation. Gabriel is getting at the conflict in 2 key parts of the song: "And still I head that sharp tongue talking / Talking tangled words" & "I can sense the danger", "I'm hearing right and wrong so clearly". It's alluded to in other parts of the song, obviously.
It's speaks/sings to the confused, conflicted mind or the depressed, sad mind just trying to figure out what would have been the right way to handle a difficult situation.

Song Meaning

Gabriel is speaking directly about being raised by an overly dominant parent, who corrected him incessantly, hurt him with a sharp tongue and heartless, twisted comments, leaving him scared and confused. The parent presented Peter a world conveniently shallow and black and white; yet Peter, as an artistic soul, could see that it was something quite different.

The remnants of this childhood cause Peter to judge every aspect of life and himself with an internal voice that -- hauntingly -- reminds him of his parent's. He's torn, simply.

It is quite likely this is about Phil Collins. The song reveals Peter's insecurity at his ex-bandmate's success and his golden voice. Remember that at this time Phil was at the peak of his career, and his songs with Genesis and solo were constantly on the radio. 'The rattle of a street car' is probably a reference to Phil's drumming. Peter is trying to be clear with the listener but can't help thinking of Phil's songs and his memories of Genesis. Fortunately the two remained friends despite the rivalry.
