| Kirsty MacColl – They Don't Know Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
While this isn't likely the actual case, I always seemed to get the feeling that this was a song about a couple in a same-sex relationship. Given, it could probably be a straight relationship where the singer is talking to a rowdy, rambunctious guy. But I still think there's something more complex going on with a few of the lines... "They say we're crazy, but I just don't care, and if they keep on talking still, they get nowhere." "So I don't...mind if they don't understand when I look at you, when you hold my hand." "Why should it matter to us if they don't approve? We should just take our chances while we've got nothing to lose." "I tell the others not to bother me, coz when I look at you they don't see what I see." |

| Guano Apes – Diokhan Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
Upon doing a bit of research, I found that 'diokhan' was spawned from 'diocane', an Italian insult that means 'king of dogs'. (also, I think "d.k." is an ascribed abbreviation for "diokahn", because that was how it was written in the lyric pamphlet for the CD.) For some reason, I feel like this song is supposed to be about a woman finding herself drawn into this smooth, slick guy, whom she soon finds to be a spineless meatball. She insults him (perhaps using the phrase 'diokhan', or its Italian derivative), and when she turns her back, he moves in on her and stabs her in his anger (hence the final lyric. Dang, that line always makes me wince from the connotations.) |

| Within Temptation – Pale Lyrics | 16 years ago |

Oddly enough, I interpreted it less of a song of conquering suicidal emotions, but more of a person with a terminal illness who wants to make the world a better place before they depart from it. I think the title 'Pale' is what led me to that conclusion, because the stereotypical sign of illness is a pallor complexion. The world seem not the same Though I know nothing has changed It's all my state of mind I can't leave it all behind I have to stand up to be stronger ((Alteration of perceptions when one knows they are about to die and that there's nothing they can do to stop it. The speaker realizes that although their fate is sealed, they are not dead yet, and that they can still incite change in the world.)) Chorus: I have to try to break free From the thoughts in my mind Use the time that I have I can't say goodbye Have to make it right ((Using the time that they have left to live, not spending the rest of it dwelling on their own mortality.)) Have to fight, cause I know In the end it's worthwile That the pain that I feel slowly fades away It will be alright ((They want to make some people happy before they die. The pain slowly fades, away as their death approaches, reassuring their pained loved ones that 'It will be alright.')) I know, should realise Time is precious, it is worthwile Despite how I feel inside Have to trust it will be alright Have to stand up to be stronger ((Again, the speaker affirms that they want to make the most out of the small time they have left to live.)) Oh, this night is too long I have no strenght to go on No more pain, I'm floating away Through the mist I see the face Of an angel, who calls my name I remember, you're the reason I have to stay ((I'd imagine that this scene is the person starting to pass away, and they know that their time has come. The pain is slowly fading away, and they feel their spirit detaching themselves from its body. However, they remember the person they love most, and they try to hold on a little longer just to see them again.)) |

Hmm, I believe it's "tormented soul" instead of "torment it's all". |

I agree with you on that last one, especially when I took notice of the lyric "Young ones fly away". I believe that one of the parents is speaking to their spouse and telling them that, although the keystone of their union, their children, has now left them, they will still love eachother no matter what. Or an even sadder interpretation could be that their child has died, and how they will stay together even in such a tough time. |

| Delain – See Me In Shadow Lyrics | 16 years ago |

I definitely agree, but for some reason I get the impression that it's not entirely all his fault, and she may have contributed to the coldness of their relationship. I really love this song because it reminds of this character that one of my friends made up for me; her full potential in life was prevented from her because she was placed in a concentration camp in a young age. Now she's successfully carried out her vengeance...but to what purpose? What will she do now? She's just this cold...careless person that shouldn't be able to have any semblance of a normal life now that her purpose has been sought out. So I always imagined that this is her thinking to herself as she debates what she wants to do with her life, and what was the exact point in her past when she became such a dark person. But yeah, that's just my interpretation. ^^ Just discovered this song yesterday or the day before, and I know it will instantly become a classic for me. |
