This song is definitely sad! I mean, "I want to be a Playboy’s bunny, I’d do whatever they asked me to . . . and they would love me like I loved you" and "I want to be a brothel worker, I’ve always been treated like one". The latter verse seems bitter to me. I think this song speaks of the desire for attention and intimacy which the narrator didn't get in a previous relationship. So the narrator dreams about getting attention and "intimacy" in ways which, in some of the cases, lead to objectification. |

"Evil angel bearing apples / When you kissed me..." These lines show that the subject was seduced. He wanted maybe intimacy or an emotional connection, but the villain used the subject and left him in misery, as shown in the line "How was I to know you'd flee". So the song having to do with rape makes sense. Last, the lines "Evil angel when you're faced with hatred's / Daggers in my honor..." might show that the subject expects or wants the villain to be hit with remorse or some other retribution. Everything about this song is so deeply haunting. |

I don't think the song is so much about "proving your love". I think the speaker is making unreasonable demands for love. Like, "Suffer some misery" and "Risk your health for me...if you want my love". I also think the lines: "The narrowest path / Is always the holiest" might suggest that limiting yourself and not expanding leads the subject to being "holy". The song appears more sinister than spiritually moving. |
