The Nun's Litany Lyrics
I want to be a Playboy’s bunny
I’d do whatever they asked me to
I’d meet people with lots of money
and they would love me
like I loved you
I want to be a topless waitress
I want my mother to shed one tear
I’d throw away this old sedate dress
slip into something a tad more sheer
I want to be an artist’s model
an odalisque, au naturel
I should be good at spin-the-bottle
while I’ve still got something
left to sell
I want to be a cobra dancer
with Little Willie between my thighs
I may not find a cure for cancer
But I’ll meet plenty of single guys
I want to be a brothel worker
I’ve always been treated like one
If I could be a back-street lurker
I'd make more money
and have more fun
I want to be a dominatrix
which isn’t like me, but I can dream
learn S, and M,
and all those gay tricks
And men will pay me to
make them scream
I want to be a porno starlet
(for that I'll wait till Mama’s dead)
I'll see my name in lights of scarlet
and get to spend every day in bed
I want to be a tattooed lady
dedicated, as I am, to art
Characters bold, complex and shady
will write my memoirs
across my heart.
I’d do whatever they asked me to
I’d meet people with lots of money
and they would love me
like I loved you
I want my mother to shed one tear
I’d throw away this old sedate dress
slip into something a tad more sheer
an odalisque, au naturel
I should be good at spin-the-bottle
while I’ve still got something
left to sell
with Little Willie between my thighs
I may not find a cure for cancer
But I’ll meet plenty of single guys
I’ve always been treated like one
If I could be a back-street lurker
I'd make more money
and have more fun
which isn’t like me, but I can dream
learn S, and M,
and all those gay tricks
And men will pay me to
make them scream

I'll see my name in lights of scarlet

ahhh yes, a story of missed opportunity and forgotten dreams...very touching.........and a great song to boot
totally about lashing out. i dig it.
This song is definitely sad! I mean, "I want to be a Playboy’s bunny, I’d do whatever they asked me to . . . and they would love me like I loved you" and "I want to be a brothel worker, I’ve always been treated like one". The latter verse seems bitter to me.
I think this song speaks of the desire for attention and intimacy which the narrator didn't get in a previous relationship. So the narrator dreams about getting attention and "intimacy" in ways which, in some of the cases, lead to objectification.
Merritt's best lyrics yet.

The singer is nun who feels her youth slipping away and is questioning her line of work as she "still [has] something left to sell". Bitter toward her mom/family which implicates that her profession might have been expected or forced upon her. Maybe she had older sisters who were married off leaving her to join the church.
She is probably tired of spending all day with ancient fossils making rosaries for orphans in Uganda and just wants to be kissed one ("is that too much to ask??"). The whole think makes me think of Maria in "The Sound of Music". She may have simply fallen in love with someone she'll never have, but describes her longing in the most extreme level possible.
This story would make a great movie where she has a secret romance with some sexy young priest. At the end they'd get exposed and excommunicated from the church and forced to leave the community, but they'd at least have each other. I'm sure that movie/story has been made 100 times already.
"I want to be a brothel worker, I’ve always been treated like one" is the saddest line! Probably true. People treat nun's and priests as different from "normal" people (myself included).
Anywhoo. Great song to listen to while slacking off at work.
fantastic song. "and they will love me like I loved you" sums it all up for me.
