Manchester Orchestra – Tony The Tiger Lyrics 9 years ago
I think you mean Matt Pryor. And yes, it's an interesting discussion. Andy said it was a series of observations, but that shouldn't change the fact that a lot of people found it very poignant on the topic of abortion, which he thinks is great.

Pixies – Gigantic Lyrics 10 years ago
My wife saw that commercial that "Gigantic" is in and turned to me and asked "did she say Big Big LOAD?"

So yeah, it's about BBC.

Frank Turner – Plain Sailing Weather Lyrics 11 years ago
One of my favorite lyrics in a long time. Clearly about making mistakes in a relationship, but my main question is if the phrase "Things got fractious, and I felt faithless, at that moment just before the dawn when everything falls apart" refers to an affair.

The last stanza is really powerful; I feel like it's insinuating a disconnect between the two of them that doesn't allow him to actually say he's sorry, making it impossible for them to coexist. So even though he wants "forever", she still doesn't truly accept him as he is.

The Get Up Kids – Holiday Lyrics 12 years ago
This song, kind of like "Overdue" off of OAW, is about Matt's father, in my opinion. It's obvious that he left the family on bad terms, but then came back and was trying to be a "father figure" to Matt after the band got successful, but this is about his disdain for that relationship and not wanting to continue it.

It's actually one of the few songs on STWHA that I DON'T think is about a girl.

Matt Pryor – Like a Professional Lyrics 12 years ago
Wow, what an incredible song and easily my favorite on the new album.

The reference to "Holiday" makes me think it's about Matt's dad, but it also sort of sounds like the song could be about Jamie, with the "tangible asset" being Matt's songwriting ability.

Manchester Orchestra – It's Ok With Me Lyrics 12 years ago
This is an interesting evaluation, but Andy's dad isn't dead. He's sung about a hypothetical death, but his father is very much alive. He did have a strong relationship with his grandfather who has passed on, though.

i think he says "Rumor is you're running it ragged"

The Get Up Kids – Shatter Your Lungs Lyrics 13 years ago
Funny little song. Apparently it's about Matt's younger brother's friend, who was caught smoking pot on the roof of the house by Matt and subsequently fell of and punctured his lung. Apparently the kid tried to play like he was okay for a while, because he didn't want to get into trouble.

Motion City Soundtrack – The Weakends Lyrics 13 years ago
In regards to the alcohol comment....

"Shorelines all around the world,
Bright lights and some heavy breathing.
Lipstick and the dagger's kiss-
Just a figment of a feeling.

Hands pressed up against the chest,
Holding out for the big connection.
Last lunge never looked so good,
It's a junk show all the way."

The rockstar lifestyle of travelling around the world and touring also usually goes hand in hand with heavy drinking and partying. A lot of songwriters still broach this subject, from Matt Skiba of Alkaline Trio to Matt Pryor of the Get Up Kids. It sounds like he keeps saying that he has to change that attitude, but just waits until the next time... every time.

Just my two cents.

The Weakerthans – Tournament of Hearts Lyrics 14 years ago
A quick note about the double meaning of the song, which i relate to greatly...

I think it's about a barfly/partier/alcoholic that has the ability to settle down with a willing partner, but finds himself at the bar constantly getting drunk instead, almost like he doesn't want to grow up. The curling analogy works so well, because of the "circles" analogy, and also because it really puts the perspective of the song into that setting of a curling rink, which is an extremely social sport. "Why can't I draw right up to what i want to say" could be him needing that social aspect in order to feel complete. "Why can I never stop when I want to stay" could be why doesn't he have the self control to say enough is enough and start his life.

I love the line "I'm always throwing hack-weight", as if he always botches everything up on that front. Ultimately i think it's a sad song, because using the "right off, no never ever" lines it's almost like he's asking the girl to give up, and he's not going to change. Such a fantastic and well layered song.

Mansions – Por Favor Is Spanish Lyrics 14 years ago
Just a note, the chorus in the album version is

I tried so hard just to forget it, but you bring it up with every kiss
Well can't you see that it's pointless. You swear that you love me but that's not how it is.

The Get Up Kids – Your Petty Pretty Things Lyrics 14 years ago
What an awesome, awesome song. I hope they play it in two weeks when I see them live.

The song seems pretty self-explanatory... someone, maybe with a destructive or wasteful personality, basically loses everything they have and are left wondering how it all happened.

Margot & the Nuclear So and So's – Skeleton Key Lyrics 14 years ago
I think some people are a little over-analytical with this song.

To me, it's simply about a girl who morph's herself to be exactly what she thinks the narrator's needing. I don't think that it's necessarily about an affair of any sorts. "I did a sick, sick thing to my love/ my lack of loyalty it swallowed her up/ and she cooked me food" seems to me to say he had a relationship where the girl attended to his every need, but he still pushed her away and never gave the way that she did in the relationship.

It almost reads as a cautionary tale to me, like "be careful what you lose." And it even vindicates her eventual departure, because he's drinking her away while she's molding herself to fit into someone else's life, because she's the "skeleton key" that can be with anyone. meanwhile, he's trying to convince himself that she was nothing special.

Thanks Muzicfreak...

I'm glad Brand New is still making good music. The Deja Entendu album is probably in my top 20 of all time.

Brand New – Sic Transit Gloria...Glory Fades Lyrics 14 years ago
I think the song is simply a device to look at the loss of sexual innocence. As you grow up and sexual attraction starts to figure into your life, it also brings the lies and deceit. While in the context of the song it's seeming that she's using him, I see it that he has feelings for her and wants to take it slow, but is peer pressured into this by friends and society, while alternately she is looking for "a life free of lies and a meaningful relationship", and she thinks the only way to accomplish that is to have sex people.

"Die young and save yourself." - It's basically saying that no matter what, the issues that sexuality bring up are universally lived by everyone. Nobody has it all figured out from the get-go.

BTW, "Sic Transit Gloria - Glory Fades" is a reference to the film "Rushmore", when Max Fisher says that to his teacher. In that film he's a 15 year old dealing with the issues of budding sexuality and sexual misidentity, so you have that parallel, on top of the fact that the "glory fades" part is referencing the general loss of purity.

Fantastic song. I particularly love the line "I understand exactly why I fell, i didn't really want you or myself."

One quick lyric addendum, the line is "I was just a kid, you should have seen yourself" on the album version.
