Its about how acting apathetic is easier than acting like yourself, because that way you don't have to deal with other people and what they think. You are a truly caring person with thoughts and ideals, but why express them when others just want to throw it back into your face. But apathy is no way to live, and this song seems to have that tone hidden deep beneath.

it seems to be about how two people have such a deep emotional connection that its almost haunting. it keeps them both up at night. its like one person has taken away a chunk of the other, so that they are no longer whole. the other is kind of a puppet master, who forces the speaker to say what the other wants them to say. The speaker seems to like the other though, and is afraid to break the grip that the other has on them because it may end their friend/relationship. The speaker is waiting for some sign as to what he should do (lightning striking the same place twice).
I love this song, but its all very confusing, it makes me go around in circles, I can't really get a firm grasp on its meaning. Maybe this was done on purpose? |

the speaker isn't quite sure if the person in question has been raised to be they way they are, or if they are indeed wicked because they want to be. Either way, the speaker is sick of it. He knows there is something beyond this person than the evil that shines through so much. Even if they were raised that way, they can't be happy, and they need to learn to overcome this, or they never will be. People can change. They can. You aren't "chained" to who you are now. You can change if you want, be whoever you want to be.

It's about how nothing ever quite goes the way that you planned. In the context of the story, it fits in a few places. Dean's parents didn't plan to have a child, but they did. And neither did Dean and his wife. The song foreshadows the end by saying that even though the future you planned for yourself is completely dead, you can now start to plan a new future incorporating the unexpected event, even though its hard because there are bound to be more unexpected roadblocks to your plan. And its hard to start rebuilding plans because you're not sure they will work out and now is your only time to run before you have to throw all of yourself into them (Its harder to fire, cause you don't have a clue).
