The Hold Steady – The Weekenders Lyrics 15 years ago
I saw them last night in SF. The song was introduced as: "This song is about the exact same couple" as in Chips Ahoy.

The Hold Steady – Cattle and the Creeping Things Lyrics 16 years ago
"he said: i got thru the part about the exodus. up to then i only knew it was a movement of the people."

This line made me giggle. Exodus is a book in the Bible, it tells the story of the Jews' fleeing Egypt. It's also a Bob Marley song, where the line (sung many, many times) is, "Exodus! Movement of the people!" The line is meant to show the character's lack of knowledge about the Bible until he started reading.

"but if small town cops are like swarms of flies and if blackened foil is like boils and hail, then i'm pretty sure we've been thru this before."

Swarms of flies and boils and hail are some of the 10 plagues Moses unleashes on Pharaoh before the Jews peace out of Egypt. The plagues are pretty awful. The idea is that their druggy scene (with cops swarming everywhere and the plague of drugs indicated by the 'blackened foil') looks a lot like Egypt during the plague. We've been through this before...

The Mae Shi – Young Marks Lyrics 16 years ago
I'm going to have to disagree with the above interpretations.

I think the title "Young Marks" is a pun on "Young Marx" [as in Karl]. The biography largely fits: came from a good family, well schooled, some interest in religious thought, but then the development of a materialist philosophy that rejects God (the purpose of living is life, there's no prize after death).

I really like the idea of Young Marx coming to this reluctantly ("my heart's not built to hold His love"). And perhaps the last couple lines are the narrator? The "war" being referenced I take to be "class war," and there's some irony to the implication that there's a spirituality or divinity to that form of social struggle.

Dude, band, give us a hand with this one! Thanks for the great song...
