Young Marks Lyrics

I was born
to potential and limitless grace
with the flashing of light
it was gone when the smoke cleared
cast in ash and powder

I was raised to obey and respect but
at the edge of the lake
was death and disruption
when the water splashed across my back it burned
for the dead there's no comfort in fate
and the light exists mainly to blind
and the purpose of living is life

I wasn't chosen
I didn't choose the path
my heart's not built to hold his love

I was schooled
in a place of tradition
but something was missing
in faces of classmates
eyes declared too blue, too deep

in the church where they lead us in worship
fighting to pull it apart
with my nails
as they chewed solid oak beneath me

for the bloods took the truth from the lies
and the lie they took plainly to god
when the life after death is a prize

I wanna reach out
I wanna shake your hand
your war is noble and divine

oooooooooooooohhhh

This song is sweet. I love the general theme of individual spiritual beliefs vs. an apparent rejection of like organized dogmatic religion that is in this album. I don't totally get these lyrics and maybe they aren't super accurate but it seems like its about the internal struggle of whether all this religion stuff is BS or not. I freakin love this existential-ly thinking paired with the fun music of mae shi its great.

I'm going to have to disagree with the above interpretations.

I think the title "Young Marks" is a pun on "Young Marx" [as in Karl]. The biography largely fits: came from a good family, well schooled, some interest in religious thought, but then the development of a materialist philosophy that rejects God (the purpose of living is life, there's no prize after death).

I really like the idea of Young Marx coming to this reluctantly ("my heart's not built to hold His love"). And perhaps the last couple lines are the narrator? The "war" being referenced I take to be "class war," and there's some irony to the implication that there's a spirituality or divinity to that form of social struggle.

Dude, band, give us a hand with this one! Thanks for the great song...

I just wanted to say...that this is an awesome mind-opening interpretation that I completely stand behind. Keep up the profound and entertaining interpretations. :]

I think it tells the story of someone who has freewill living among people without it. In Hlllyh, he is essentially the exception to this god-based apocalypse. He's raised as a normal person, but knows there's something shaky about this. The water burns his back because for some reason he is unlike a creature that god would create. In the end, he's impressed with what god has done with existence.
