Mat Kearney – On & On Lyrics 15 years ago
In his recent interview featured on his website, Mat Kearney talked about "On and On":

"'On and On was another song that I wrote with a friend. This girl named Kate York, she's a super-talented, Nashville singer/songwriter. She was just working on some chords and I started singing along and then pretty soon we're halfway through a song and we ended up just writing it. We were going to cut it off the record; 12 songs is a lot. But I like, just really felt like, this was worth something."

Again, this doesn't really explain the meaning of the song, but the origin instead.

Mat Kearney – Straight Away Lyrics 15 years ago
In the interview featured on his website, Mat Kearney talked about "Straight Away":

"Straight Away I wrote... When I go home to Oregon, for some reason whenever I travel I have this desire to play the piano, I don't know why it is. They were building this whole auditorium for the University of Oregon and there was this beautiful grand piano in this big ballroom. It was like, my little sanctuary to write, so I ended up writing Straight Away there."

Again, this doesn't really explain the meaning of the song, but the origins instead.

Mat Kearney – Annie Lyrics 15 years ago
In the interview featured on his website, Mat Kearney talked about "Annie":

"Annie was... I wrote in the back of the van on the way home from like a really dirty venue in Indianapolis. It was like one of those places where... I remember there was this girl in the front row that just kept blowing smoke in my face, the whole show. It felt fitting. There was a girl named Annie who told me her story about having to leave her parents and the city of Salt Lake City and just the pain that she had to get out of, she had to get out for her own health, and (????), and this whole story unfolded in my head and became this song, that I found myself in and some of my things, in those times where you're having to get out of certain areas or painful places. That song wrote itself, like, in 10 minutes, I wrote it."

Mat Kearney – Runaway Car Lyrics 15 years ago
Whoops the last line should be "It's also dealing with being scared of falling in love, and... the stupid things that you do if you're scared to fall in love."

Mat Kearney – Runaway Car Lyrics 15 years ago
In a recent interview, Mat Kearney was asked about Runaway Car:

"Runaway Car was, was one of the first songs I started playing. We... It started in the studio and it was just me and Robert playing all the instruments, and playing the guitar, and I think I'm hitting a set of bells with a screwdriver, if you listen that's the E-Street, kind of high frequency that's happening in the song, but umm. I started writing that in the House of Blues in Los Angeles and, this, this idea of regret and wanting to change. And some people say, you know, 'I have no regrets,' and I probably, don't... I definitely have regrets and I feel like having those regrets can be the things that push you into not wanting to walk down a path that maybe hurt you, or has hurt someone, you know, in the past, so. It's kind of dealing with all of those things and this desiring to get off of this motion that's headed in the wrong way and wanting to, kind of, 'Why do I do the things I don't want to do?' It's dealing with those ideas. It's also deing with scared of falling in love, and the stupid things that you do if you're scared to fall in love."

Mat Kearney – New York To California Lyrics 15 years ago
In a recent interview, Mat Kearney said this about New York to California:

"New York to California is like the most literal song, and I wrote it, umm, while someone was falling asleep, to the TV. So I wrote this song. That's all I'm going to say about that one. It's pretty literal. Just listen. Just, turn it up."

In the entire interview about this album, that was the song he seemed most emotional about, or seemed to kind of pause and hold his breath a bit.

Mat Kearney – City of Black & White Lyrics 15 years ago
In a recent interview, this is what Mat Kearney had to say about City of Black and White:

"City of Black and White was another song that I wrote with a friend. And actually wrote it in this apartment overlooking the Bosphorus River in Istanbul, which separates Europe and Asia, which is very odd, but the city is on both sides, you know it's like, literally divides the continents in half, and then there was like this new door opening up to a new project and a new idea. City of Black and White came out of that. And it was one of the first songs that I wrote."

I guess this doesn't really explain the song, rather the origins of how it was written, or what inspired it.

Mat Kearney – Lifeline Lyrics 15 years ago
In a recent interview, this is what Mat Kearney had to say about Lifeline:

"Lifeline was actually one of the songs that I wrote with one of my friends from Nashville and that's something on this record that I'm really proud of. Like, my last record I wrote almost everything by myself. For some reason in this record, being in Nashville, being in the community, I really wanted to invite people in to the process. It's like, it's very much in the history of Nashville music, you know. Johnny Cash could write the greatest song in the world, but he would also invite Kris Kristofferson, and his wife. And something about Nashville and just the rich, the wealth of songwriters, I wanted to invite friends in. And I didn't go after big names, I just went after like, the local artists that I really respected, you know the guys that work at the coffee shop, or the guys that I met at some show. Lifeline started out in my living room and we just started writing it and I liked it. So I recorded it."

Mat Kearney – Here We Go Lyrics 15 years ago
In a recent interview, Mat Kearney had this to say about Here We Go:

"Here We Go is like, was one of the oldest songs and it, I felt like it was a real, it became like a sonic identity that, we wanted to go after, the record which was to make it big and epic, and kind of this old 80's, like early 80's war U2 record. Like I feel like some of those elements we touched on was like, 'Wow, this really works.' And it was actually the first song where I really started playing all the electrics, which was big for me. I haven't done that tons, but I think I end up playing most of the music, so, which has a simple quality to it, you know I'm not like a very profound player but I found my identity, and I found my inability to be something that I liked a lot. Made it visceral and refined. So, Here We Go is really, is this kind of crying out. It could be a break up song or it could be a plea to not be a breakup song. Somewhere in there."

Mat Kearney – Closer to Love Lyrics 15 years ago
Mat Kearney was recently interviewed about this song:

"Closer to Love, or 'Closer,' as I sometimes call it. I don't know, that sounds pretty straight ahead. My guitar player said something about there's a phone call... You're always one phone call away from something bad. And I was just thinking about that and, you know, we're all one phone call from our knees. And I just felt, there's like this, something's happened and I think the world we're in... There's this looming phone call that could happen. Whether it's, family member, or job, and there's kind of this crying out for help in the middle of that. And also me finding that in a relationship. In the faith. There's all that goes on that's working there. I mean, who hasn't had that phone call?"

Mat Kearney – Fire & Rain Lyrics 15 years ago
Mat Kearney was recently interviewed about the new City of Black and White album:

"Fire and Rain is also one of the last songs we wrote and, I don't know, that song is definitely dealing with this kind of like, prodigal friend or something. There's like this sense of distance and you wanting to experience some sort of redemption and cover that distance and maybe bring together friendship or love or something that has fallen apart. 'I heard you were back in town,' 'I heard you were comin' around,' and that's the lyric there, you're desiring to be back in that relationship I guess."

Mat Kearney – All I Have Lyrics 15 years ago
Mat Kearney was recently interviewed about the City of Black and White album:

"Well 'All I Have' was the last song that I wrote on the record, and it was how we started the album off. I don't know, we just felt like, 'Here we go at it three years later,' seemed like a fitting first line, almost pushed like unpause on the record and on what I've been doing and what I've been up to. That song, to me, is very much dealing with the sophomore album thing, finding myself again and, all the songs that have been going on, on a year off, and the years I spend on the road. Feels like picking up where I left off."

I personally thnk it's a song talking to God, and talking about all the stuff out there in the world, in the media, in the music world or the "airwaves" and he's just talking to God again on his walk in life. Growing up, maturing, and moving forward.

Mat Kearney – Lifeline Lyrics 15 years ago
i think he's singing about a girl who is confused, insecure, and searching for answers, for her purpose in this world. and she never seems to be settled because she never can find that answer. so she's always lost and wandering, running around. she's invested her life in things that don't last, and she's seen that "everything she's ever belonged to" has left her. and so she's always run away from her life, from facing reality and truth. and he wants her to see that her answer and life purpose should be find in God. i don't know. that's just how i interpret this song.

Mat Kearney – Here We Go Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this song is about how this guy and girl's relationship came too fast too soon, and it was too intense and they rushed it. and he doesn't know if he'll ever be with her again, but if he does, he wants to do it right and he doesn't want to "lose her all over again". no more goodbye kisses. and even though he's been hurt, he'll give his heart over and over, because that's just the heart he has for her.

the hardest breakups are when things just get overwhelming, and even though the two people still love each other, people just run away because they feel they need to breathe. and in the end, they both lose their best friend. and they realize that it's a long road running away, but they're scared to go down that path with each other again.

Mat Kearney – Fire & Rain Lyrics 15 years ago
I think it's about a girl who left a guy to go discover herself in this world, and he's saying that he's never stopped loving her, and that no matter where she's gone, no one knows her like he does. And even though she's hurt him, being prodigal, he feels they're "not that gone", and he still loves her

Mat Kearney – New York To California Lyrics 15 years ago
i like this song a lot. i think it's self explanatory. i want to incorporate this song into my future wedding. i like how it's simple and innocent. he's just spending a quiet night with his girl and singing this song to her while she's asleep, and half singing this song to himself about her.

Mat Kearney – Never Be Ready Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this song can be about a girl who isn't ready to commit, and he's talking about how there's no time like today. And fear can be an anchor that makes you paralyzed and move nowhere in life. And ultimately it's only the fear we create in our minds that really holds us back in life.

It can also be about a guy talking to a girl about jumping in and committing to God. And he says, "You're okay, you're with me," saying that he'll help her along the way. And the road is narrow but they should follow, and they'll do it together. I don't know. Those are my thoughts.
