The Wallflowers – Birdcage Lyrics 9 years ago
I think it's about a miserable lover (let's say 'she') who leaves the writer--enticed by the hope of happiness with someone else. She doesn't find happiness with the new lover because she is the source of her own misery. She very intentionally seeks out her past lover (the writer).

The Wallflowers – Another One In The Dark Lyrics 9 years ago
Agreed ! Such an amazing song that only Jakob could craft. I imagine:

He's dating an unambitious girl and his ambition to achieve is being pushed on her (or rubbing off?). Things work out much better for her and she moves on from him.

@[xstarsailingx:14786] "this song like many others on Deja Entendu is so much more mature (in terms of lyrics) than on Your Favorite Weapon."

We could never have imagined where this ship was headed back then.

Modest Mouse – Never Ending Math Equation Lyrics 10 years ago
Animals eat, have sex and sometimes play. Plants grow, spread, and get eaten. We're just here, feeling nothing, confused. We're the only things that don't really know where to go. We're the weird in the universe. To add to that depression, it might happen again and again.

The Wallflowers – I've Been Delivered Lyrics 10 years ago
Definitely one of my favorite songs anywhere, and as I found out a few years ago at a concert, also one of Jakob's favorite songs ! This song is so beautifully and carefully crafted. You can't successfully summarize a song like this, you can only write novels of it.

I was surprised to find people wondering what it means since it's always been so clear to me. It's about finding happiness, or possibly enlightenment, in life. There is the realization of how unclear life is. We're all placed into these complex, confusing, unique lives. If we dig some we all face the same issue of struggling to find happiness.

The overarching theme is having an idea of how happiness is obtained, which gets you very close to having it, but then after trying, you understand how much of a journey it is. So letting go of the journey, and everything... that's the realization that's so valuable.

Brand New – Sink Lyrics 11 years ago
As with a lot of Jesse's songs, I have the suspicion this song is about loathing himself--being the betrayer and selfishly taking advantage of words. He's using people that expose themselves to him, and in derision pointing out that he's going to make them sink. He thinks people should see through the charade and disgrace him for it.

This is exactly the feeling I get from this song. The song's serene confrontation of death blurs into the noise.

Bright Eyes – A Machine Spiritual (In the People's Key) Lyrics 11 years ago
Listening to this song, I get the notion of the Dharma Wheel of Buddhist philosophy. The outro at the end when the guy says 'creation is rolling' especially reinforces this interpretation for me. The nothingness that other people get at is certainly important here. Getting eye-to-eye with this nothingness is painful despite necessary for enlightenment. In this frame, Conor is yearning for a way off of the wheel, out of existence, since he's recognized it. It's like seeing the ending to a movie, and then figuring you might as well skip the beginning and the middle.

The black machine is the universe.

I've been wanting to point this out for a while: I suspect Conor may think there's some kind of grand code of the universe, something like ultimate enlightenment (thinking back to digital ash). In the People's Key, it's seeming like once the code is found out, everything might just reset--perhaps for just that person, or they'll be 'freed' from whatever it is. He seems to struggle between different ideas of deism, and perhaps one of those is a secret suspicion that we're just a code running somewhere.

Foo Fighters – Arlandria Lyrics 12 years ago
I hadn't researched this at all when I wrote this, so I don't know what it's actually about. I feel like this interpretation fits pretty well except for a piece or two. This has reminded me of a situation I was in that was very frustrating with a girl where everything was right but I couldn't give her the time she wanted and it caused me to back out because I couldn't bare to go on and her never be truly happy.

Ain't that the way it always starts
A simple round of conversation
Became a shameful equation
I flipped you station to station
A relationship starting and morphing into something painful.
When the troubles came, the writer tries to find what is the base of the problems.

Hey, don't go and turn the other way
Don't say there's nothing more to say
Come on, hear me out, hush, hush, settle down
Button up don't make a sound
As he’s sifting through all these things in his mind, he’s trying to talk them out with the partner. It’s turmoil for the other person, not knowing why the writer is even having problems. He keeps asking for the partner to just stick around while he figures it out.

Shame, shame, go away
Come again some other day
You used to say I couldn't save you enough
So I've been savin' it up, I started savin' it up

It’s hurtful to the writer that he’s stirring the pot—in his mind, he doesn’t know whether the problems are real, or whether he’s just making them up. Finally, he suspects that his partner is expecting too much of him: time, attention, energy…

And when you said I couldn't give you enough,
I started givin' you up, I started givin' you up
You are not me, Arlandria, Arlandria,
You and what army, Arlandria, Arlandria
Oh God you gotta make it stop

And he realizes the terrible truth of it all. If he just gives her the time she wants, he wouldn’t be happy. If he keeps going on without changing anything, he knows she’ll be unhappy. The only option is to just draw away entirely. He’s frustrated now, they’re different people, he’s been trapped into this position by her, and he needs her to be more realistic.

Chase all of those memories away
Save them all for another day
Don't you remember it was rain that drowned you

This line could be about her or him. (if her): her past has caused her to be the way she is now, and reminds her that it will cause problems again, like in the past with whomever else. (if him): he’s frustrated with himself and just wants to forget about the relationship. His ill perception is what got him there, and he needs to remember to cast it away.

Wait, I wanna see if you can change
I wanna keep all I can take
I feel much better now
Use me up, spit me out, let me be your hand-me-down
Fame, fame, go away, come again some other day

This is pleading with the situation. He decides to give it a shot again, maybe she can lower her expectations. He’s a little reckless now: I’ll handle anything on my end, let’s just try this. He’s frustrated with fame and all of other life’s distractions, if they weren’t there they might not be having problems.

You used to say I couldn't save you enough
So I've been savin' it up, I started savin' it up
And when you said I couldn't give you enough
I started givin' you up, I started givin' you up
You are not me, Arlandria, Arlandria
You and what army, Arlandria, Arlandria
Oh God you gotta make it stop

This is the same as concept as when he decided he had to draw away (above).
My sweet Virginia
I'm the same as I was in your arm
My sweet Virginia
I'm the same as I was in your arm

I’m not sure. Maybe he’s things are getting rocky again and he wants to remind her he’s the same as he was in the past.

Shame, shame go away, come again some other day
Memories keep haunting me, help me chase them all away
Hush, now, settle down, button up, don't make a sound
Close your eyes, turn around, help me burn this to the ground
Come now, take the blame, that's OK I'll play the game
I don't care it's all the same, watch it all go up in flames
Use me up, spit me out, let me be your hand-me-down
Fame, fame, go away, come again some other day

He’s lost his will now and he’s pissed at the situation—relationship, aspiration, haunting memories.

You used to say I couldn't save you enough
So I've been savin' it up, I started savin' it up
And when you said I couldn't give you enough
I started givin' you up, I started givin' you up
You are not me, Arlandria, Arlandria
You and what army, Arlandria, Arlandria
Oh God you gotta make it stop

My sweet Virginia
Oh God you gotta make it stop
My sweet Virginia
Oh God you gotta make it stop
He’s pleading for the situation to stop.

SR-71 – In My Mind Lyrics 12 years ago
I'm glad you brought this up. When I look at the dates on wiki, you're right... although this song being about Jeff Reid seems to work pretty well. The only way it'd still work is if Jeff knew he had cancer and this song was about him because of what was to come. But it doesn't say he knew that early..

"So call it quits or get a grip. You say you wanted a solution, you just wanted to be missed)"

Maybe he's unsure and she keeps on grasping on to the relationship and keeping it going, hoping that at some point she'll finally be missed--showing that he cares.

I'm in a pretty similar situation as the guy, and it seems a lot like she's the one who's stopping things from ending.

Known this song for a long time, but it's not until tonight that I discovered what it was. It's comforting that a song can describe something so complex. My girlfriend (2 years) is unsure who she is, but I know who I am. I'm afraid I won't be happy long-term, so I don't think I'm a safe bet, and I'm having a hard time hiding it. It makes me feel vile, like my heart is stone. She's so sure about us, I just want to comfort her that she should forget and move on. I love her and don't want her to hurt. She's wonderful and deserves someone who loves her just as much back.

Sum 41 – Second Chance For Max Headroom Lyrics 15 years ago
No strong leads as to what this song is about... The max headroom thing is a hint but haven't tied it in yet.

Seems like it's about a girl or a friend who is making really bad choices and playing ignorant about them.

The last part of the song he's giving up on the person somewhat.

--So maybe the title (Second Chance for Max Headroom) parallels to Max Headroom getting a second chance but failing (I'm not sure how popular he was when he re-emerged)... but maybe this person got a second chance and just flat out blew it.

The punky part might be the intermission between the first and second chances.

Just some wild, frantic guesses/suggestions.

SR-71 – Go Away Lyrics 16 years ago
I find it hard to believe this song has so few comments. SR-71 has grown on me a lot lately, especially this song.

I think the break up is right, but he projecting what he wants-- a way to make the pain go away. It sounds like he's gotten to a point where he thinks he's just going to be alone and has accepted it ("But for you, It'll always swing down"), and is trying to make himself feel good by thinking about some "magic" thing that could make the pain go away...maybe it will be the same thing that realizes that he shouldn't be afraid or feel stupid.
