I Agree with the comment about breaking down gender barriers, but I don't agree that it's the only issue being tackled with this song. It's obvious to me, from listening to it, coupled with the video, that the song is about just what it says its about....coming undone. I think that every person on earth has some part of themselves that they struggle with. A part that is not part of the societal norm. (i.e. the 'health conscious' woman who is also an alcoholic, or the business man who dresses as a woman when he's home alone.) They are parts of ourselves that are deemed "Too embarrassing" for "Polite" society, and therefore are hidden away. But what happens when you do come undone? What happens when you just can't hide who you are anymore? Where do you turn to? Who? This is the overall theme of the song. I think he's telling people to look at the world from the view of a child. Children are loving, honest, and non-judgmental. They don't see differences (gender, race, religion, sexual orientation) the way adults do, because they have not yet been formatted to think that different is wrong. He's telling us to "Come Undone" from all the stereotypes we are taught to believe as gospel truth. "It might take a little time, might take a little crime to come undone... Now we'll try to stay blind to the hope and fear outside. Hey child, stay wilder than the wind to blow me in to cry." He's telling us to do whatever it takes to stop looking down on people. To "stay blind" to all the judgmental types who only seek to hurt others to better themselves. To the children, he is saying to not conform to bullying. This is just my opinion. |

I believe the last part should be: Screening our screenplay off the cuff, We were both stuck pretending our dreams were enough. I awoke in the morning worn in the day I thought I could have you miles away from falling in love. Gin finds tonic sweet enough. Please Don't call it Love. Other than that I believe the song (to me anyway) is about naivety. I almost get a sense of embarrassment for being innocent. I see a younger person (or even just a more inexperienced person) getting with an older person (Or more experienced person) and being naive enough to believe that something more than just physical things would come of it. It's a belief that the more experienced of the two people is actually interested in the younger and then the younger's realization that they were just being used for "benefits" so to speak. This is entirely my interpretation. I could be completely off. |

| How does this song have no comments? I love the Wailin' Jennys. Their voices mesh so beautifully. This song is very self explanatory, almost cliche in the lyrics, but the delivery is so incredible and the melody really lends itself to their voices. Haunting. Definitely one of my favorites. | |

This is my situation. The love of my life is my best friend. He recently started dating someone else, and I am utterly heartbroken and sick over the whole thing. We have been talking about it, a lot actually, and he knows how I feel about him, yet he still is determined to be my best friend. I've been saying a lot about how I feel like giving up, that I don't feel like I'm worth anyone's time, and that I don't know who I am anymore. I'm constantly being hounded by friends and family who tell me that he's not worth risking my health over (Because I'm literally getting sick because of it) but I'm insisting on staying close to him. This is my favorite NIN song just because I so often feel like this girl and all I want is for someone to love me this much. Yesterday, he posted the lyrics "It's something I have to do. I was there too. Before everything else, I was like you." as his facebook status. Somehow I know it was a message to me. I just wish I knew what he was saying. |

| I agree with the whole "it's about someone who is apathetic to the world" type thing, but I was thinking about it and to me it also sounds kinda like someone she is friends with has a terminal disease (although being apathetic could technically be a terminal disease). Just the line "Just cause they call themselves experts doesn't mean sweet fuck all" I get that the "Experts" have said that the person doesn't have very long to live, so the person has just given up on life in general. Also "To put yourself in it and turn into one of those cigarette ads that you hate" maybe Lung Cancer? He said that even though he knew he wasn't ready to move on, he dated me "just to see where things went". I ended up falling and love, and he ended up shattering my heart. I think this line fits perfectly with my situation. He still gets off treating me like shit (unconsciously, mind you) by playing head games with me, and rather than being an "ordinary broken heart" and moving on from her, and being with me, he's still a sniveling bitch about the whole thing. I believe the lyric is actually "Come Look at the Scars, Smother our hearts, opening up no more...." at least that's what Ville says it is :) Great song though. Definitely one of my faves off of "Screamworks" :) I think it's a generally uplifting song, surrealistic in nature, but nevertheless about making small romantic gestures count in a time where most people believe Chivalry is dead. At least that's what I get from it. |
