Can someone tell me a song meaning?

Mute Math – Spotlight (Twilight Mix) Lyrics 16 years ago
I thought the lyrics were "And when you feel the war cannot be won". It sounds like that to me, not "And when you feel the wall cannot be burned".

It rhymes better that way too...
And it makes more lyrical sense...

Fionn Regan – Put a Penny in the Slot Lyrics 16 years ago
I really like Timjim's idea with the church candles. It makes complete sense. Putting it with Joshcuba's idea about the unrequitted love, this song is a lot easier to grasp.

So to me, the first part is this guy sort of embarrassingly admitting that he has some of her things. "Ah it was not me, but someone else you see twisting the steering reins" is him saying, well I'm sorry, but I wasn't being myself when I took those things of yours.

Then to the chorus, maybe this unrequitted lover is putting a prayer out their for either himself or that other person. (That's assuming Timjim know's what he's talking about.) I don't think it's "Mark old and line", that just makes less sense to me than "My golden arm".

Then it's some general poetic ness haha. If their's more meaning in the next part, feel free to correct me. The church candle part is self explanitory.

For the bit about the dog, I don't know why it's significant, but nonetheless it doesn't take away from the song. The message in it is a bit hopeful though. Yes, a Rhodesian Ridgeback is a dog breed.

It's pretty hard for me to understand what the books are about in the song, I've never read them :(

The next verses are where you get more of a feeling that the speaker is talking about unrequitted love for a girl.

After the chorus, the next verses are about loss, and it gives the song a sadder feel. About tears like flashbulbs?

The nettle line is very good :)

Am I the only one who thinks it's significant that the chorus changes like it does? It goes from a penny machine that makes an artificial light (church candles if Timjim is right), to a penny machine that makes a drunken sailor boy dance, to a penny machine that makes him see swans through a telescope. Then back to the artificial light.

That's what I really want to find out!!!

Isn't it "kiss" me gently?

I know it's bad but the first time I heard this one verse of this song I sort of chuckled.

"Now time is all that we have
So won't you let me inside your perfect world for one night
Just open up for me
Girl I swear that I will be everything you've ever thought a man should be"

Haha that part just sounds like sex to me.
But not to diminish this beautiful song, it's great.

Oh and if you don't like how I saw it, please don't complain haha. This is just my opinion. I know a lot of you think about this a lot differently and it's cool with me, just saying.

Jack Johnson – Broken Lyrics 16 years ago
The beginning of this song is about a person who has just left something behind. A relationship perhaps? They might be sad about things still but it's an optimistic point of view. By saying "just continue to drive" it gives me the impression that it's not a happy thing, but the person is trying to get over it and tell themselves it will be ok.

So the person is at the point after a break up where they're still hurting, but they know that it has to get better. They need it to get better.

The chorus is what gives this song it's entire theme in my opinion, because it tells me that the person sees potential in how things can get better. They find someone new and they know that they would "rather be broke down" with that person instead of suffering alone. He hopes that person might have been looking for companionship too, even though they're probably way too great to need to look at all.

"I didn't know what I was looking for so I didn't know what I'd find" I think is him saying that the person didn't expect to find something hopeful like another person to need. If that makes sense haha. That person was nice to them, so it kinda opened their eyes. So he didn't know what he was missing out on until then.

Then the song goes on to say how some of the painful memories are slipping away, and that at first he thought they were important to him. He thought he never wanted to forget them, but this new person sort of helped him see that it didn't have to be so significant. It wasn't ever worth as much as he thought. It goes on to say that he noticed how much time he had wasted either going through that relationship, or just worrying about it I'm not sure.

These lyrics sort of put things in perspective for people trying to heal after a terrible breakup. I guess that's why they made me think so much haha. Sorry it's long.

I agree completely with what that person just said. My ex was like that... he lost interest in that sort of way once the relationship was normal. Comfortable.

John Mayer – Daughters Lyrics 16 years ago
This is a great song! But some of the lyrics are wrong. Even if it's not important, I've got to say it. Some of them are major differences, like an entire verse. Little things being the 'I' in the beginning.

I know a girl
she puts the color inside of my world
she's just like a maze
where all of the walls all continually change

and I've done all I can
to stand on the steps with my heart in my hand
Now I'm starting to see
maybe its got nothing to do with me

fathers be good to your daughters
daughters will love like you do
girls become lovers who turn into mothers
so mothers be good to your daughters too

Oh you see that skin
it's the same she's been standing in
since the day she saw him walking away
now she's left
cleaning up the mess he made

so fathers be good to your daughters
daughters will love like you do
girls become lovers who turn into mothers
so mothers be good to your daughters too

boys you can break
find out how much they can take
boys will be strong
and boys soldier on
but boys would be gone
without warmth of a woman's good good heart

on behalf of every man
looking out for every girl
you are the god and the weight of her world

so fathers be good to your daughters
daughters will love like you do
girls become lovers who turn into mothers
so mothers be good to your daughters too
so mothers be good to your daughters too
so mothers be good to your daughters too

Wow I found this song on accident but I think it's soo sweet. It also reminds me of my favorite book in the world, "The Perks of Being a Wallflower". She's got a beautiful voice and even though I've never heard of her until now, I think I'm about to become a huge fan.

Haha I'm on here because I heard it from House TOO. That's amazing. Yeah I've heard this on the radio once or twice, and I'm glad I finally sat down to give the lyrics a look-over. I like hethsk8ter's idea of the song because if that's really what the song is about, it'll give me the hopeful feeling I'm looking for whenever I hear it. If that makes sence =P

Great song though. It's catchy :D

Joe Purdy – Rainy Day Lament Lyrics 16 years ago
Wow I feel so weird because I'm looking up a song I saw on House at 1:33 am haha. I love the songs they play in that series, and anyone would agree when I say they're all emotional tear-jerkers. This is a great song.

I especially love this when it says:

How do you feel when there's no one there
on the other end of the phone

It just struck a chord as soon as I read it and songs don't usually feel so personal to me. Everyone has those times when it feels like your luck has run out, and the emotion behind this song is very profound. Especially when there are parts like that that hit home. It would always hurt so much when I would be talking to my boyfriend on the phone and all I would hear is silence, and trying to elicit a conversation just hurt even more. It's like knowing there's nothing to say.

And how am I the first to comment this song? It's a great song. Unless someone manages in the minute it's taking me to type this...?
