my take on the childrens' voices is a little different from yours as well. i dunno if haunting is really on point. it seems that any real 'child' of the teachings of christ would say things like 'Joy be written upon the earth And the sky above Jesus star that shines so bright Gather us in love', a beautiful message that gets tainted with ulterior motives by adults who 'let their feet stray'. now, i'm certainly not calling the lyricist a christian, and i'm certainly not calling myself one, just my take on the meaning on that aspect of the song. |

although i feel that matt scales is mostly on point, i'd have to say that i agree more with immanentvoiceless on the lyrics, but i'd like to go into a little more detail for the other posters. the song seems to me to be a critique on christian churches. the lyricist makes priests out to be military recruiters with lines like 'It wrecks me how they justify their acts of war' and then elaborating with the line, as if quoting from a priest, 'After death it's so much fun' and he also makes the congregations out to be 'sheep', but not the kind that jesus intended. mindless sheep that do not take the word of their priests with a grain of salt, they worship sermons condoning war and hate like gospel. but he (the songwriter) seems to respect the figure of jesus, and his seems to be a message out of love as well. i get the feeling that lines like 'be / a friend to me' (very thoughtful line, both engaging the listener to love one's neighbor while also suggesting that living in the moment and enjoying life is something to cherish) 'gather us in love' are sincere. almost as if it were a prayer to correct the wrongs that permeate organized religion. i feel like these lyrics should be nailed onto a church door somewhere. |
