The Book I Read Lyrics

I'm writing 'bout the
Book I read
I have to sing about the
Book I read
I'm embarassed to admit it hit the soft spot in my heart
When I found out you wrote the
Book I read so

Take my shoulders as they touch your arms I've
Got little cold chills but I feel alright The
Book I Read was in your eyes oh oh

Oh...I'm living in the future.
I feel wonderful.
I'm tipping over backwards
I'm so ambitious
I'm looking back I'm
Running a race and you're the book I read so

Feel my fingers as they
touch your arms
I'm spinning around but I feel alright
The book I read was in your eyes

Na na na na...na na na na na na na
Na na na na...na na na na na na na
Na na na na na...na na na na na na na
Na na na na...na na na na na na na
Na na na na...na na na na na na na
Na na na na...na na na na na na na
Na na na na...oh oh oh oh oh oh oh

Oooooh...I'm living in the future
I feel wonderful
I'm tipping over backwards
I'm so ambitious
I'm looking back I'm
Running a race and you're the books I read so

Feel my fingers as they touch you arms I'm
Spinning around and I feel alright
The book I read was in your eyes

Na na na na na...na na na na na na na
Na na na na...na na na na na na na na
Na na na na...na na na na na na na na
Na na na na...na na na na na na na na
Na na na na...na na na na na na na na
Na na na na...na na na na na na na na
Na na na na...oh oh oh oh oh oh oooh..

I don't think it's literally about a book. I think the book is a metaphor for a person. Maybe he talks to her on the phone through another friend or something, and then meets her himself, only to realize it's the same person. He loves her, and he's imagining their future together. Maybe he's "running a race" meaning competing for her with some other guy - possibley the friend who he originally met her through. I know it's out there, but that's my idea.

What a wacky love song, whether it's to a book or favorite author or just some chick.

"The book I read was in your eyes" gives it away.

My Interpretation

It's about a guy who read a book and fell in love with it! The book isn't a book, it's a girl that heard a lot of good things about and when he met her and fell in love with her and has to compete against another guy for her!

See that is what I thought too, but the tone of it to me kind of suggests that it is more like hes singing about how it was so easy to seduce her. He read her like a book, but then again, he DID fall in love in love with that book. I still think though, its funny because he's singing to her about how easy and satisfying it is to take advantage of her.

And Byrne said that 'This Must Be The Place' was his only love song! Well, I guess this is more of an infatuation song.

I think of it like a story, could you imagine reading a book and loving it, and meeting an amazing person who turns out to be the author of that book...

i think that this is the perfect interpretation of this song. absolutely spot on.
