Tori Amos – God Lyrics 16 years ago
To me, this song is specifically about the male-dominated way Christianity is run. Tori seems to be calling out the patriarchy of the institution. God never comes through for women, if this god exists. Time and time again, women are viewed as a lesser beings than men. It's even all right there in the bible:

"give not thy strength unto women
nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings"

Pslams, I think. Not to mention the whole Adam and Eve story.

Anyway, I love this song. It embodies what I feel towards this subject in religion. I will not worship a God who views me as an accessory or inferior. I will not be part of an institution who deems me unworthy of holding their highest offices and respects just because of my gender. I love Tori <3

Zac Brown Band – Chicken Fried Lyrics 16 years ago
@Richie: No, you were saying that I was wrong because apparently country artists aren't the "ONLY artists who talk about their country and their love for it/her." Then you didn't give examples of other artists in other genres; instead, you just went straight to how "rap is stupid." My reply was that country music is the one genre of music where patriotism is almost GUARANTEED to be in every song, and that is why I don't like it. That has nothing to do with rap.

But if you want to talk about it: Rap is not just about sex, drugs, money, etc. The chunk of it that are about those things is the rap that is commercialized and you hear on the radio. Things like poverty, discrimination, intolerance, systematic violence, and politics - those things are clearly present in ALOT rap, but I guess those aren't as important as fried chicken, right?

@ uclaornd: You may be right. But in my personal opinion, I find the repeated repitition of just how important those things are to be boring, bland, and PREACHY. Most of the country music I hear on the radio (ala Zac Brown Band's "Chicken Fried") just regurgitates those things over and over, to the point of excluding anyone who wants to criticize their government, rejects religion, or is somehow different from the mold that modern radio country has created. That's why I stick to older country music, like Johnny Cash, or other country-influenced music, like Bright Eyes.

Incubus – Pantomime Lyrics 16 years ago
I believe bboyd_is_genius got it exactly right.

Actions speak louder than words. I love the feel of this whole song, although I like the version that was released on Alive at Red Rocks a little bit more than the version on Monuments and Melodies because it's a little bit more minimal, and the very last note of it just cuts me and makes me all smiley and invincible. I like to think of my relationships in the context of the song as well. And man I wish they would have played it at the show I went to on August 21st...it would have been the perfect concert!

Simply wonderful and inspiring, I love Incubus so much.

Nine Inch Nails – 13 Ghosts II Lyrics 16 years ago
Upon futher listening, I think the track is also about birth as well as death. At first I only had mental images of a peaceful death that an old woman may have accepted, but recently I've also thought about a baby in a uterus. It's kind of the same thing, almost. A similtaneous life and death message.

Or maybe I just think too much. :P

You do know that the rap you hear on the radio isn't the only kind in existence, right? A lot of rap is very political, very socially aware. It's just not the stuff you hear on the radio. And I say the same about country music too - there is a lot of good country. It's just that this song is representative of the radio kind that isn't very good at all. And I don't like it, so don't get your panties in a twist that I don't, and you do. It's not the end of the world.

And you didn't even refute my claim. Modern country is the genre where you hear overwhelmingly patriotic sentiments in the majority of its songs. It's basically standard. That's what I don't like, and it has nothing to do with rap. Rap and country aren't complete opposites, bby.

Brad Paisley – I'm Still A Guy Lyrics 16 years ago
Haha, well if you are wondering, my comment is 90% sarcasm :)

But I kind of disagree - it's definitely bashing a certain type of man. There is nothing wrong with being a "manly" man (problematic term there) and liking being that way, except Brad Paisley seems to be implying that any guy who doesn't act in that "manly" way isn't "still a guy". The old gender roles and such. It's tiring to see it reinforced. I think it does more harm than good.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Shallow Be Thy Game Lyrics 16 years ago
Isn't this song called Shallow Be Thy NAME? You know, like the line in the Lord's Prayer ("Hallowed be thy name")?

Anyway, I really, really love this song. It says alot about how I feel about religion (Catholicism). This is what I make out of the some of the lyrics:

"I was not created
In the likeness of a fraud
Your hell is something scary
I prefer a loving god"

Here, what comes to mind is how people say that God is wonderful and great and loving, but then turn around and say how if you don't follow/believe in him or religion's rules, you will burn in hell for all eternity. The concept of being sent to hell when God is supposed to be a loving god is contradicting. Why would a being who is described as peaceful and loving and forgiving send you for hell for not believing in him? That‘s just cruel. I think he is saying, "I prefer to believe in a god who would not send people to hell solely because of beliefs. If God would do that, then I am not created from that God."

"I do not serve
In fear of such a curse"

To serve a God simply because you fear going to hell isn't a very good reason to serve God.

"Shallow be thy name
2000 years look in the mirror
You play the game of shame
And tell your people live in fear
A rival to the way you see
The bible let him be"

It's all religion here. 2000 years is, as someone already said, referring to Jesus Christ. A man who preached love and forgiveness. But look what religion does - it plays off of shame and fear. I was raised Catholic, and I have experienced this - it's always "You're not good enough", "You need to repent", "You need to feel sorry for simple human emotions and urges", "God will not love you unless you do [this]", "God doesn't like [that]", "You will burn in hell unless you do all [this]", "Anyone with different views than [this] is going to hell", "OH GOD FORGIVE USSS" etc. etc. It's maddening. Anthony seems to be calling the dogma of religion out and saying, "Look in the mirror and look at what you're really doing." It's in stark contrast to a loving God and a forgiving Jesus Christ.

"I'm a threat to your survival
And your control company
You'll never burn me
You'll never burn me
I will be your heretic"

Control company = religion. They control people's lives and minds very often (and it seems that they want to control government too...but that's neither here nor there.) Anthony is saying, "I will rebel against you. This is one more person who will not follow your rules and lead to your downfall."

"You can't contain me
I am the power free
Truth belongs to everybody"

First two lines seem to be saying: "You cannot contain this brain by your restrictions and shame. I am free from your control, free from your power." The last line makes me think of when people say that their religion is the ABSOLUTE truth, that everyone else is wrong and they are going to burn in hell because they don't follow their religion. Truth belongs to everybody - not just one specific religion and group.

"To anyone who's listenin'
You're not born into sin
The guilt they try and give you
Puke it in the nearest bin"

Original sin. The concept of original sin is the biggest shame of all (plus some added sexism!). Eve ate the apple out of pure human curiosity, and got Adam too as well, and it was shameful because God told them not to do it. Therefore, everyone is sinful because they were the first humans, and we are forever going to be trying to make up for their mistakes (in what world does that even make sense?). So, when everyone is born, we are all sinners, and the only way for us to repent is to accept Jesus. We are not complete, or good enough, until we do.
Anthony is saying: REJECT THIS. Do not allow yourself to feel guilty over nothing.

"Missionary madness
Sweep up culture with a broom
Trashing ancient ways
Is par for the bourse
It's fucking rude"

The missionaries who go to other countries, "helping" out the poor and taking over countries in the name of their religion. A lot of the time, it was just to convert (reminds me of the missionaries who go and try to "help" the AIDS crisis by preaching abstinence to the poor and giving them religious lectures). They destroy the cultures already built - for example, the Native Americans. They were forced to take Christian names, and completely throw away their language and everything about their culture to be "assimilated" into ours. The underlined theme: "My religion and beliefs are superior to yours." It's fucking rude indeed.

"To think that you're above
The laws of nature what a joke"

This makes me think of all those Christians who reject evolution and proven science and everything because "God Did It" and it's the only explanation for everything that ever happens.

"Purple sashes feeding masses
Smoke on which to choke"

Purple sashes - the Pope's/priests' garments.
Feeding masses - Double meaning: feeding the masses means, going along with the context and tone of the song, how religion (or the pope, ie purple sash) feeds its followers shame and fear and hate. It also refers to (or connotates) to the (several?) stories of Jesus feeding crowds of people. (The one I think of is the fish and bread story...he fed a mass of people out of very little.)
Smoke on which to choke - The incense they burn in Church mass.

Anyway, that's what I make of the lyrics.
It's really one of my favorite anti-religon songs. <3

God this song is annoying. And it basically wraps up Every Single Country Song Ever:

Put together all the stereotypical "country" things, say how much you love them, reference yourself as OMG JUST A HUMBLE COUNTRY GUY, and always, ALWAYS say something about how America is the best and you love this country and blah blah blah.

Don't people get tired of this crap? Granted, I know it's catchy (not to me, but i know it's catchy to others) but seriously, if you've heard this song, you've heard at least 50 other country songs in the same vein.

I don't like this cover, and this song is so out of place on the Watchmen soundtrack. So terribly out of place. But I admit that I'm biased because I kind of hate MCR.

But it's like loverly23 said: It's not good, because it's not Bob Dylan. Some covers don't need to be made, because they bring nothing to the original.

I agree, Mistica. This is my favorite track off of the whole Ghosts album.

It's one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard in my life, period. It brings out so much emotion in me that I can't help but tear up when listening. I can't really describe what goes through my head - a mix of sadness and solace. I think of childhood. Of years gone by. Of all the people I love, of what I have now. The human condition, expressed in just mere notes. It's gorgeous; it hurts.

If a song had to sum up the beauty and sorrow of life, this would be the song.

Beautiful. Just beautiful.

It makes me think of death approaching, and the acceptance of that death. The ticking I hear in the backround - a clock. Your time is drawing closer. But you're letting it engulf you, you're going to let yourself be taken in by that current gently. You're going to be free.

As the music builds, you can hear Trent exhaling and inhaling throughout the last half of the track, which adds to my idea of the song. (And also it's kind of sexy. I mean, wait what, I didn't just say that :P)

The last thing you hear is a breath escaping.
So yeah, I like the mental image this song gives me. Very cool.

This is probably my favorite track on all of Ghosts (well, second favorite).

Seriously, it's such a BEAUTIFUL piece of music. Every time I listen to it, I'm just blown the fuck away. It's gorgeous and sad and inspiring all at the same time.

And it makes me think of flight. I envision a person, maybe a child, closing his eyes and thinking of flying - how it would feel, the euphoria of escape. When the guitars kick in, he's deep in his world, already sailing.

I can't say how much I love this track. It's simply beautiful.

Brad Paisley – I'm Still A Guy Lyrics 16 years ago
"When you see a priceless French painting
I see a drunk, naked girl"

You stay classy, Brad Paisley.

"Well love makes a man do some things he ain't proud of
And in a weak moment I might walk your sissy dog, hold your purse at the mall
But remember, I'm still a guy"

Yeah, you're SO weak for holding a purse and walking a dog that won't kill a human. God, poor you. I bet that takes alot of strength!

"But when you say a backrub means only a backrub
Then you swat my hand when I try
Well, what can I say at the end of the day
Honey, I'm still a guy"

Yeah, only guys like sex and stuff. And jeez, she's totally lying when she tells you exactly what she wants. I mean, it's either they don't tell you what's on their minds, or you know, they're really lying and just want you to molest them unnecessarily when they do! Oh, those women! Obviously guys have no sense of self-control! Women should know this and just take the molestation because it's expected, amirite?

"These days there's dudes getting facials
Manicured, waxed and botoxed
With deep spray-on tans and creamy lotiony hands
You can't grip a tacklebox"

OH GOD NO. They can't grip a tacklebox?!? Holy shit, what is the world coming to when all guys everywhere don't like the Manly-Man sport of fishing?!?

"With all of these men lining up to get neutered
It's headin' now to be feminized"

Men are getting neutered? Like dogs? Buh?
And LOL yeah those stupid feminine traits! I mean they're icky and stupid, no real person would want those kind of traits because they belong to inferior wimmins! Who cares about the obvious fact that everyone is different and everyone has a mix of testosterone and estrogen in them, REAL MEN ARE DEVOID OF ANY FEMININE CHARACTERISTICS! (This includes having feelings, cause those are for women, dontcha know?)

"I don't highlight my hair
I've still got a pair
Yeah honey, I'm still a guy"

It's a well-known fact that when people, regardless of gender, dye their hair slightly to change their looks, they immediately lose their testicles and right to be the best thing anyone could ever be - A MAN, OF COURSE! Oh it's true. FEAR THE HAIR PRODUCTS!

"Oh my eyebrows ain't plucked
There's a gun in my truck
Oh thank God, I'm still a guy"

Having a unibrow is sexy. So is killing things with your manly man gun. If you don't have a gun, you're NOT A MAN. Thank God you're still a man Brad Paisley, and not something icky like, say, a woman!

So basically, this song is about a guy being so self-absorbed in his masculinity and the proper way a "man" should behave that he thinks anyone who doesn't think like him or act in society's rules of his gender has something wrong with him or obviously MUST be a girl. Also, homosexuality is stupid. Tbe end.

Don't you just love modern Country?

On one hand, the song is really catchy. I'm all for experiementing, and bisexuality exists, people!

But on the other hand, shouldn't you experiment respectfully? Seems like she's just using the poor girl. And the one thing that always bugged me about this song is how it presents lesbianism/bisexuality as just a game and a passing fun thing, or something to be flaunted when you get drunk so all the boys can drool at it. As if to say, "Omgz she's kissing a girl that's hot!!!1 but I know she's just doing it to have fun, no girl could really feel something for another girl." I really, really hate that aspect.

I disagree with the people who are saying it's a "marry someone who will take care of you like a father" meaning. I get the complete opposite. The person you marry shouldn't be your father, who treats you like you're a child and someone to be taken care of (because you're NOT A CHILD, you're a full-grown woman!).

"You need to know the difference between a father and a lover."

There IS a difference. A lover is your partner. He isn't your provider, your dad, your protector and the guy who's gonna make your life all nice with no worries. He's your partner, someone to share your life with, not someone to solely depend on and do all the work for you. That's what the song is saying to me.

And for all those who are bashing Meg's voice, I'd just have to wonder what you think of Jack's, because his voice isn't vastly superior in comparison. Srsly.

There are many ways to love just one person - like a brother (protective and advice-giving), like a child (looks up to and clings to for attention), like a mother (nurturing and unconditional love, no matter what you've done), like a lover (sex and romantic-aspects). You can love someone in all these ways, all at once. They all are different colors of love.

But the person in question only loves in red - just one way. It might be just solely sexual, or (this is the way I interpreted it) the person can only see them as the boyfriend/girlfriend - only good for cuddling and kisses and the like. They never see them as a confidental, a friend, a person they could trust with everything. It's only the romantic-type of red they see in, and there are no grey areas with this person - they only see in black and white with everything (sort of like, "Either you're my lover or not, you can't be my mother or friend too, you're just my romantic sex companion and nothing more"). So they couldn't be The One.

Also, I'd like to make a quick comment on this song, musically.

I have to say, her voice just so filled with emotion. It's...wonderful. But so sad. I love it when she goes into "No such details will spoil my plan", it's great. And the little "huh huh huh!" she does, ahahaha.

The Dresden Dolls – Sing Lyrics 16 years ago
I think it's about the power of music. Not just singing, I think, music in general. Hell...just something that provides you with an outlet, or expression - you could replace 'sing' with 'play' or 'draw' or 'write' or what have you, and it still fits. Amanda's is singing.

"There is this thing that's like touching, except you don't touch."
As we all know, music is something that can touch you incredibly deeply. Amanda and Brian don't have to walk up to each of us and tell us some fortune-cookie phrase to change our lives - they do it with their music.

"Back in the day, it just went without saying at all."
To me, this line refers to the loss of intensity and emotion in today's music. Most music being produced today seems so cheap and meaningless, somehow lacking depth. You listen to something like Zeppelin, to Jimi, to other artists who put their heart and soul and sweat into their music, and it always seems far superior to the overused fast-food type music we have today. They didn't need to say that their music was deep, or to draw attention to the fact they played with everything they had. They just. fucking. did it. And you could HEAR it.

"There is this thing that's like talking, except you don't talk."
Expressing yourself through whatever outlet of your choice is a different and truly unique way of saying something. There's something about presenting an idea or emotion through music and art that is completely different than just saying it outright.

She goes on to say, sing for the bartender, janitor, animals, astronauts, presidents, terrorists, soccer teams - whatever you want. Whatever your passion is. Whether it be political, personal, or just seemingly meaningless - sing your heart out. Give it your all.

"Sing for the teachers who told you that you couldn't sing."
Fuck all of those people who told you that you can't. You can't sing, you can't express yourself, you can't be this, you can't do that. Fuck 'em all. In this moment, you're gonna sing.

"Sing for the kid with the phone who refuses to sing."
The people who distract themselves so much with technology - sing for them. The people who complain about people singing at concerts - sing for them. The people who, like the teachers, tell you to shut it and refuse to go along with the amazing feeling of music - sing for them.

And everyone will sing someday. Everyone will take a chance and do something with all of their hearts. It's just a matter of when.

The Dresden Dolls – Me and the Minibar Lyrics 16 years ago
It's the couple's anniversary, but he left her the night before. So she's going to do all the things they would have done anyway - have a romantic dinner, drink, have sex. The song conveys the lonliness of that situation.

As far as the "put your insides all on ice" bit, I think she's refering to the drinks. And the "If they only knew what my night was coming to..." : Well, being smashed to bits isn't a very lovely and awesome thing. Especially when you're already depressed as hell. It can only go downhill from there.

And also get the impression that when she says "it was real true love" and "it's just us my love", she's in some way talking to the alchohol too, like a substitute for him, as to say, "Yeah, this is love."

But the Doll's songs can have so many interpretations. This was just mine. =]
