Birmingham 6 – Die For Jehovah Lyrics 16 years ago
I couldn't help but laugh when I heard this song... obviously a song about the bullshit of the Jehova's Witness cult. Mentioning how they think it's rape if you take another's blood in any way, even something such as a blood transfusion (whereas the only way the Scripture actually mentions taking blood as a sin is to consume it, as in drinking the blood of another human).

Also I thought it was clever, the line, "burn down the Tower," because the cult is also known as "The Watchtower".

A very well-written song... and this coming from a Christian, hah

Just an average cliché love-song. Way too mushy for my tastes.

Lacrimosa – Tränen Der Sehnsucht Lyrics 17 years ago
Really amazing song. Obviously about the pain of longing for someone, perhaps as if longing to regain the love of someone that you once had.

Though it's not communicated in the lyrics that I can tell, the finale of the piece seems to have a distinct and even ironic change in motif from the sullen, contemplative and sorrowful that stays almost constantly the mood of the entire earliest few of Wolff's released works, into the oddly triumphant, ascending into a melody that is both uplifting and inspiring. Why this sudden complete transformation and its significance to the meaning of the overall piece is a mystery to me. Why does the mood of the music undergo such a drastic change while the lyrics dwell in the chorus, on the note of "tears of longing" and "tears of loneliness"? I'd really like to hear someone else's interpretation for insight into Wolff's decision to progress the song that way.

Lacuna Coil – Soul Into Hades Lyrics 17 years ago
I don't think it's just depression, I think it's death, and the fear of death. Once again really great English lyrics come from a foreign band -- a lot of writers who call English a first language can't get the same depth and meaning from such simple words the way bands like Lacuna Coil do.

This song has some really beautiful aspects lyrically, the choral section comes to mind. "It's hard to say/see, you must believe it," seems apparent to me to embody the concept of faith to comfort a dying person; not to worry, because death will supposedly carry us into the afterlife, it's difficult to believe since we can't see it but you must believe it. The same prospect seems to be used by the dying to comfort himself as well, "maybe in a dream I'll go between the sun and shining stars".

The title being "Soul into Hades," I think all in all it's a real work of art and an interesting look into death as a subject in music... like much good art, it may be about a much over-used subject, but it offers a beautiful look into it, and one with very real human connections in this case.
