Well with all due respect and I know it is all up to interpretation but I think this song is about an older man who lost his wife. Not to divorce but to death. I think of my grandpa when I hear this song. Colin Hay is a god lyrically because his songs are so personal yet they touch everyone. So bluntly personal at times that when at first you go what? but it isn't about making a song that sells its about telling the story |

I do not think this song necessarily HAS to be about two people in love. It could be much more primal and basic, maybe he is just talking to a person who he thinks knows him best, used to know him best but got lost somehow. He is so depressed he feels old tired and weak, he may soon be attempting suicide which explains why he says i wont feel these slices and cuts. I have had this feeling so often too that he needs them to open their eyes so they can look into his. Like he is the only one on the planet. I need you to look at me, but not just anybody someone who understands to look at them. maybe he is talking to a loved one in a coma at the hospital, and he is going to commit suicide and kill them both. Take my hand and walk from this dark room for the last time? who knows thats why i love music! |

I think of movies like cold mountain when I hear this song. Two people that are far apart geographically but not in heart and spirit they have to be together and they will cross rivers and statelines to do so. Love love love this song |

There are a lot of ways to interpret this song. I think I agree with the masses about most of the song but here are some that I thought stood out as my favorite parts because they appeal to me personally. 1) I as a lot of you do think that "those three words said to much and not enough" are I love you. 2) for me it always makes me tear up when he says "all that i am all that i ever was is here in your perfect eyes" because I think of my grandma on the hospital bed and I felt the same way. 3) I also think the garden he is talking about would show him that life still goes on after death at some level. |

The only version of hallelujah I have found that is comparable to John's is Brandie Carlie. She pours so much into that performance. But what I think this song is is a bunch of different stories of how people resort to having no options left and just screaming hallelujah. Hallelujah of course can be expressed two ways in joy and in desperation. I think the song relates peoples stories from their past and people in it to give you a very short glimpse into their lives |
