| Siouxsie and the Banshees – Peek-A-Boo Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| IMO this song is about a woman who has submitted to tawdry objectification within the sex trade. The lyrics suggest that she knows how to work it but behind all the sexual allure, glitz and excitement there's someone who's hurting. The lyrics are colourful and full of sleaze but Siouxsie's tone is aggressive and almost borders on sarcastic - which in itself suggests there's some unpleasant feelings underneath the surface. I think it serves as commentary on the double life of a sex-worker and her fragile psyche. | |
| Siouxsie and the Banshees – Sea Of Light Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I think this song is about being murdered and crossing into the spirit realm which is described as a journey through the "sea of light". There's no mention of heaven or hell but just metaphysical elements which evoke a sense of beauty and serenity. I think this is a really sad song. | |
| Alanis Morissette – Orchid Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I cannot understand why this track was not included on the actual album but was instead featured on the bonus disc of the special edition. This is by far one of the best Alanis songs I've ever heard and it's better than every track on "Flavours". | |

| Tori Amos – I I E E E Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I couldn't agree more - that's what clicked with me as well. The Es I think definitely stand for Ecstacy and the "Lip Gloss boost", "Is it God's, is it your's, sweet saliva" - I basically picture a crackwhore giving a blowjob, she needs to reapply her make-up "In your America" because this whole country is governed by men and the Church. I definitely think this song is about misogyny in religion and how America is run by men who gather their values from the Bible which places women at the bottom of their hierarchy. I think the line "WE SCREAM IN CATHEDRALS" is loaded with meaning because according to the Bible, women are never allowed to speak up in a church. | |
| Tori Amos – The Happy Worker Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
the lyrics here are a bit messed up - anyway - what I LOVE about this song is Tori's dry cynical delivery of the lyrics which makes me think she's being sarcastic and the job is not, in fact, a joyous one afterall. As the music builds, by the end it actually sounds military (which ingeniusly ties in with the film's narrative) and the happy factory sounds more like a war camp. |

| Tori Amos – 1,000 Oceans Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Tell me I'm way off but to me this song was about reminiscing over something that's long gone but something that you still yearn for - even though the boundaries have been set and there's no hope of it coming back. The lines about "Solar Fields" and "Silbury Hills" make me picture landmarks that carry so much emotional significance to the individual and it prompts her to cry out - to remember and to ask questions. The "Solar Fields" in particular - could it be about an astral plane? This is what told me the song is possibly about death and someone who has crossed over. The lines about the "playing at the trains" and the "little blue ball" that fades away - childhood perhaps? Does this person remember such a time or does it fade away? "Little blue ball", could that also symbolize the planet Earth? Considering the album "To Venus and Back" features the prominent theme of the solar system - could this be a way of saying "the earth is fading away" as you cross into the universe? Again this supports the idea of the "Solar Field" being a place far beyond our physical world. |

| Tori Amos – Riot Poof Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Thank you for all those quotes - it does help verify some of what I suspected the song is about. I think the themes are clear but it's still hard to decipher Tori's language. I'd always thought the song was partly about self-hatred brought on by prejudice against a person's sexual orientation. The verse: you know what you know so you go chain her to your flow she bites through your lean dried meatas she's going to the movie show in a bath of gliter and a tiny shiver she crawls through your lava sea black sahara i'm stepping into your space oddity This, I cannot help but think it's about trivializing martyrdom - turning it into a sort of fashion statement. "She bites through your dry lean meat as she's going to the movie show - in a bath of glitter and a tiny shiver" - it all conjures images of a social scene, a world of superficiality, sharp tongues and bitchiness. I think this is Tori's assessment of the gay scene or maybe just the idea that it's suddenly cool to embrace sexual diversity but it also works as a smokescreen to cover the fact that there's a whole lot of anger and hatred underneath it all. The scene, in fact, perpetuates this sort of behaviour but makes it out to be something cheap, fun and harmless. I could be completely wrong but still. I do recall reading something about the gay scene and its superficiality. |

| Well said :) | |
| Björk – Pluto Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Ok - If I may offer another interpretation. The song is about two forms of consciousness - one connected to the physical body and another attained through astral projection, becomming the astral body. The "brand new" body is one that exists on a metaphysical plane - this is all according to esoteric theology and partly tantric buddhism. | |
| Mandalay – Don't Invent Me Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I think this song is about how we fall in love with the idea of someone and confuse that with the reality of who that person really is - which may effectively defy that idea. She's saying "Don't invent me, 'til you need me" - note that she uses the word 'need' as opposed to 'want' which is most commonly used in love songs. "I want you, I want to be with you", etc. She is not denying that there's an element of falsehood involved with the notion of 'inventing' someone, but she would rather be assured that the ideal stems from this person 'needing' her. | |
| Juliet – Avalon Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I think the song is not only about the point of realizing that the relationship is on its way out but also that they were just kidding themselves to begin with. I think there's a bit of clever sarcasm in the chorus "we'll take a holiday, you know I'd love you better" - in contrast to the verses, this line sounds optimistic and terribly naive. I think she's mocking of the notion that people actually believe such things because most commercial love songs perpetuate such unrealistic ideas. A line and a velvet rope Looks like this party has the best view But no life Headstrong, my precious alibi I refuse to complicate you more than twice You are no reason to give You are no reason to try I LOVE this line because it sums up her perception of club culture - "This party has the best view but no life". It's all glamour but no substance. "Headstrong, my precious alibi" - I think her alibi is directed towards herself. She's put-on a persona to adapt to her surroundings yet it defies her true nature but she's doing this because it's socially expected. The persona is simple and naive, suggesting that her partner must be also - she understands he couldn't fathom how she's unsatisfied with this lifestyle ("I refuse to complicate you more than twice"). This song is loaded with cynicism and that's what I love about Juliet - she's like an anti-pop-star. When you really listen to her lyrics you find a whole new level of meaning. |

| Christine Anu – Sunshine On A Rainy Day Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| what a shit song this is - they used to play this on the automated playlist at work and i quit my job almost entirely because of this shit music. anyway, i think this was christine anu trying to catch onto the pseudo-new-age vibe that was going 'round in the late 1990s thanks to Madonna and William Orbit, maybe Delerium to a lesser extent. the lyrics are cheap, meaningless and really thoughtless - it's like one of anu's songwriters sat down for five minutes, put this crap together and said "yeah, that sounds spiritual enough" - the next day they recorded it and I puked. | |
| Madonna – Drowned World/Substitute For Love Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
This song demonstrates how intelligent and eloquent Madonna really is! It's provocative and challenges those who see her as a dumb aging pop-tart. It disappoints me immensely that after Ray of Light, her most accomplished and poetic album, she went straight back to being a dumb aging pop-tart. Anyway, that aside, I LOVE this song! I think the meaning is relatively simple - Madonna is reflecting on a life spent in the spotlight, chasing things that only mattered for the time-being. "Substitute for Love" I think stands for something that fills the void. No matter how famous or happy you are, there's always a loss of that special something - and in this case that something is love. The verse about the "Trinkets, ferris wheel, etc" - I think it's Madonna turning against that world of fame and glamour. She's realizing that it's all fake and she's now found something real - even if that real thing is just a "substitute" it's also a revelation. The "substitute" stands for holding onto the truth until real love comes along. Ending the song with "this is my religion" gives credence to the idea that the substitute for love is part of a new belief system. |

| Madonna – 4 Minutes Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
this song is indeed weak. the music itself lets down what could otherwise be a remotely better song. That obnoxious horn section is dreadful and gives it a very campy feel so we're not even enticed to give the lyrics a chance. Anyway, quite frankly I think Madonna and Justin scrapped together a bunch of loose lyrics of their own and put them together hoping that something meaningful would come out of it when ultimately it just sounds, well... like a bunch of random verses mashed together. Seeing that the song is called "4 Minutes (to save the world)" and Madonna has made her political views known as well as committed herself to global campaigns fighting AIDS and poverty - I was utterly disappointed that the lyrics seem to centre on herself as an icon rather than anything substantially connected to "saving the world". I think the song is about self realization and knowing your place in the world as a starting point for then making a difference. The only like that really strikes a cord for me is "the road to hell is paved with good intentions" - meaning, we may think we're doing something right but ultimately it leads us to our own demise. |

| Massive Attack – Teardrop Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Elizabeth Frazer is a nutcase - in a good way, of course. Anyway - I think the song is about being strong-willed but also feeling powerless and becomming complacent with that. The first verse: "Love, love is a verb -- Gentle impulsion, shakes me makes me lighter" may be about contemplating the pleasure and the meaning of simple things that fill us with a sense of security and control. The repitition of the line "Fearless on my breath" (which, until now, I always thought was "Feathers on my breath") may indicate that the idea of a strong ego or identity is a fundemental key to survival (hence "-on my breath", it's as natural as breathing). We need to feel sure of who we are. I think deeper into the song things get a little more serious as we face "teardrops on the fire" "the mirror" and "stumbling a little" - these are things that challenge our inner-strength and self awareness and that's why she ends with "stumbles a little". I think the key line in the song is "teardrop on the fire" - that single line in itself is loaded with meaning and, in my opinion, summerises everything the song's about. Something soft and fragile that faces up to an insurmountable obstacle. I think that idea is backed up by "- of a confession" - a moment of truth and realization. |

| yeah, I read that quote too. Pretty amazing stuff :D | |
| Tori Amos – Cornflake Girl Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
That's a good point! I never thought of that but you're right, it's a fact that's why cornflakes were made. Lol! I read a bit of Tori's bio and there's two factors which also come into play - 1: Tori once starred in a Kellog's "Just Right" ad prior to writing this song. I don't know whether that had any baring on the lyrics but I suspect it would have considering Kellog's make Cornflakes. 2: The song was inspired by a book Tori had read about female castration in Africa. Mothers would sell their daughters into tribes where men would practically mutilate their vaginas - I don't know why exactly. Some sort of rite of passage or political beliefs - either way, it's pretty sick. |

| Ladytron – Predict the Day Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I know this sounds far-fetched but I kinda had the impression the song was about someone abusing their powers of authority and battling with morality vs power. | |
| Ladytron – Destroy Everything You Touch Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I think you're right on the money. I think this song is about relying on a defensive attitude by means of protecting yourself. I also think there's some political connotations suggesting that the person is paranoid about higher authorities bidding against us. The lines "takes your gun/shakes your hand" conjures ideas of government conspiracies, secret organisations and such. | |
| Ladytron – Ghosts Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I personally favour the response from martinellia88 declaring that Helen's former self would have apologised but whilst she (the present self) still feels somewhat remorseful it's only in fleeting stages. Helen has divided herself into two seperate entities, each representing a different perspective on the situation. I also think that she romantisizes the situation by depicting it as a sort of fairy-tale by speaking of "princes" and a "trail of 1000 tears" as a way to dull the pain - or maybe it's a way of suggesting that her "ghost's" perception of things was romantic and naive. |
