| yes, finally someone who gets the philosophical ideas of existentialism that nietzsche explores: "God is Dead", and decartes "i think, therefore i am" concept that trent harnesses..! hoorah | |
| Nine Inch Nails – Right Where It Belongs Lyrics | 17 years ago |

rené decartes? cogito ergo sum (English: "I think, therefore I am") trent could be reffering to the concept of discarding perception as unreliable. i think this is very likely! |

Do you love your guns? Your God? The Government? this is what trent often touches base upon. another satirical display: holding the mirror upto society, pointing out flaws via imitation. |

| Nine Inch Nails – Burn Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
i agree - "i look down there where you're standing flock of sheep out on display saw your lives burned up around you i can take it all away" it seems to be written from the point of view of perhaps jesus: people are willing to believe anything in desperate times, eg rise of nazi germany during the depression: citizens polarize and look for a savior to help them, to lead them. and its obviously very satirical and vicious if it is concerning this religion, stating that christianity is your savior, but then showing it is really corruption and then revealing itself to be man kinds angel of destruction. i dont agree with this point, and this is only a touch-base, but this is my interpretation of trents motives. any comments back plz?x |

| Nine Inch Nails – Me, I'm Not Lyrics | 17 years ago |

yeah, i agree. it's concerning soldiers and war: "you've got something I need kind of dangerous" perhaps directly indetifying with the afgan/iraq war: we were told of clear evidence of nuclear weapons of mass destruction. all through out the song, it appears to be from a soldier/infantry's point of view (some one low down in the heirarchy: who gets told what to do.) the government didnt, and still hasnt, told us the whole truth. if only we knew back then what we know right now. |

| Nine Inch Nails – Discipline Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
i agree, this song is more satirical about society than self motivated: putting up the mirror to society and saying make decisions for yourself! we dont need to be disciplined we dont need to be helped and how ridiculous it sounds to beg for discipline and help. he is pointing out flaws via imatation: discipline and help yourself. to be governed is walking along thin line, he is questioning if its crossed the line into oppression - he articulates this suggestion through out the lyrics, by a persona deffo not of his own: a non dominant follower, and ingorant (not offensively ignorant, jus more like innocent) person; also displaying pack mentality ie dogs need their roles in daily life defined, and need to be governed and disciplined and poses questions like a scared dog whos done something wrong: "Am I taking too much? Did I cross the line, line, line? I need my role in this Very clearly defined" it says "you know, once i start i cannot stop myself" YOU KNOW. who is this you he is addressing? once again ironic and satirical we are humans. not animals. we CAN stop ourselves. asking questions he asks alot of questions... questions where an answer is expected: the answer that "you know". once again, like an oppressive figure, you've: "I see you left a mark, Up and down my skin, skin, skin I don't know where I end, And where you begin" so yeah. thats just touching base. :) harder to identify with, but more or less brilliant still... just in a different (politically concerned) way. what do you think about that? :S plz reply |

| Nine Inch Nails – Please Lyrics | 17 years ago |

"time starts slowing down..." right before an accident eg car crash when things get overwhelming, time slows down so we can realistically deal with what is occuring then... "now everything is clear I erase the fear" so its like a personal safety mechanism: subconciously or by heroin (diamorphine); stop reality, and retreat to recoup so dealing with problems becomes a possiblity. or be consumed/overwhelmed and "sink until you drown" deffo relates or touches upon addiction of more than one sort... esp if you can find the music video! ;) |

| Tool – Schism Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Okay, to wrap this all up... I'll refer to the video one more time... although it can be seen as 2 separate people becoming one, i believe it's the "church" reforming into one unit... I mean notice what happens to the 2 separated people [who represent "denominations"]... they almost seem to be trying to outdo the other. I mean one even stands on his head during the song. It seems they're trying to show that they're the BETTER group (which you can't deny happens today). Yet in the end, the 2 come together, reforming the one true body... suggestion: when the christian church was formed, it was by saint peter and saint paul, the TWO caretakers and preachers who, after jesus died, were left to carry forth the word. saint peter brought the church in one way: individualism and personal interpretation of religion, the preachings of love and tolerance (from jesus), liberalism saint paul brought the church in another: organization, mass production, the preaching of the book of revelations ie apocalyptic predictions, and persecution, esp of non believers... perhaps the schism could be based on these differences that once worked together as opposites but were no longer functional and seperated into (more or less) totally different views on christianity? it is a type of relationship: a the relationship of different and opposing (sometimes contridicting) characteristics of religion: a caring and forgiving god...a vindictive and vicious god (mother...father) PLZ REPLY :D |
