This is such a beautiful song, though I'm not entirely sure of its meaning.... From an interview with Liberation Frequency: "I wrote some words over a picture of him in the newspaper because it was all I had to write on and then I couldn't sing the song without seeing this big picture of Wayne Rooney staring up at me. And somehow the words seemed like they could have been sung by him..." |

Here are actual lyrics: Get up and play the fool, The audience won’t bring you down. That’s right, you do what you do, While no one else is around. These people are my people, Watch how we roll. Don’t mess them up, they’re young, Life’s only just begun. And for the record, we were messed up on our own. He takes the fakes and puts them in their place, And he swiftly moves along. And he’s known around these parts As a breaker of social scenes and hearts. And yeah, I’ve spoke, And yeah, we get along. God, I could fall for a man that can sing about Love and depression among other things. And the man he sings about romance To a woman he hardly knows. What good does it bring? This is the life that he chose. I don’t get happy people, Why do they care? They can't be happy all the time, And they’re really just not there. And they’re all loved up on some drug, And I hope that it’s not love, Because I like them effed up and not really there. And I like them them roughed up, A little bit fucked up, If it can be arranged. As high as a kite And as willing to fight as a man of his age. God, I could fall for a man that can sing about Love and depression among other things. And the man he sings about romance To a woman he hardly knows. And what good does it bring? This is the life that he chose. The man sings about romance To a woman he hardly knows. What good can it bring? This is the life that he chose. And I like them them roughed up, A little bit fucked up, If it can be arranged. As high as a kite And as willing to fight As a man of his age. |

Personally, I think this song is about her disillusionment from Christianity. If I'm not mistaken, she went to church on her own until she was 12 or 13, then became a Buddhist, and now is an Agnostic. I think that the line "I fell into the water and now I'm free" is referring to the idea that some religious people don't worry about committing sins because they know they'll be forgiven by God (hence, they're free from responsibility or guilt). |

I've always thought this song was a bit about growing up and changing. When she was young she idolized a guy but then realized who he really was and moved on. And then the second bit about God, she used to be a Christian but now she's agnostic. I read this interview with her somewhere where she talked about how kids who are really religious miss out on some of the aspects of childhood, which is what she's referring to when she says "don't cry child, you've got something I would die for." Also, "I used to need a couple people keep my head down/now I need a whole lot more to keep me on the ground" could possible be referring to her choosing not to kneel down before God anymore in church. |
