| Thursday – A Darker Forest Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
I love this song's depth. I think it is fairly up to interpretation but the metaphors are beautifully layered. The whole idea of a 'darker forest' implies something beforehand that was either not as dark or not even a forest. This concept is developed in the first verse with the line 'presence of the world at hand' when the storms have passed, and in the second verse with 'darker forest waits'. Things have changed, and it seems for the worse. This first verse is also summarizing the extent of the change and describing the darker forest, how it paints blood with the sun (turning positive into negative imagery) and how it casts in relief all the colors previously seen (same idea). It's a great image because being inside a forest really does change the colors and envelop light into shadows. The chorus gets into the person's feelings about coming into this new place- the question of is it even real, and could it be possible. It's the idea of being someplace that you never thought you would be, and never wanted to be, where light is fractured and branches are broken, and the darkness is stifling. The second part is developing the first question- things have become so different, the forest is so dark, the person is wondering whether or not everything has become a lie, and if there was ever another way out. The second and final verse is my favorite. The metaphor of a dark forest here is that it is so easy to become lost in one. The person is caught in a repetitive cycle of reliving mistakes and trying to find where they first went astray- but never able to really find that singular place, because every fork in the road just extends back farther into the deep. Finally, it's about the realization that no choice was really 'right', and every choice would have brought you to this place... 'Walk in circles, and never find our way.' Truly lost in the forest. It seems to me like the forest itself is just a metaphor for a place in life where we feel like there is no way out or feel lost, and question everything we used to know. The different ways Geoff describes it is pretty amazing. You can really imagine it as he sings, and that's what I love about his lyricism. From Geoff's point of view, it might specifically have something to do with a relationship- the plural 'we' in the verses (we had been, we relive, we'll walk) and then the singular 'I' in the chorus seem to give that inclination. In the context of the rest of the album's material that idea would also make sense. But that's just a guess. |

^Same here welcome2space. Ironically enough I post this comment on the 9th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. But anyway I only wanted to mention an interesting tidbit I found- The part that says 'scales fall from our eyes' comes directly from the book of Acts, chapter 9, in the Bible, when Jesus appears to Saul on the road to Damascus. Saul is blinded by Jesus' light. When later he regains his vision, it is described as 'something like scales fell from Saul's eyes'. Something I stumbled across. Certainly no coincidence. |

| Thrice – Wood and Wire Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| There's something about slow songs and driving late at night. I don't know what it is, but it gets me every time. This is a perfect late night song. Makes you think about life. | |
| Thrice – Wood and Wire Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Totally agree with the death penalty theory. It just seems like there are a lot of different references in this song, like it suggests another, deeper, hidden metaphor or something. I don't know, it's fun to think about though. Lines like "weight of endless glory still remains" and "dawn is coming" or "all my sufferings are a light and momentary pain". Interesting. | |
| Thrice – The Great Exchange Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Interesting. Check out the Vhiessu b-side, "Weight of Glory". Great song. After reading some C.S. Lewis it's easier for me to see the influence he has on a lot of Thrice's lyrical work. | |
| Thrice – Circles Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Yeah I saw that article Prettyxsuffering as well and was going to post it. Dustin's whole interview deals with this song. It was really interesting to read his thought processes and everything for developing these awesome lyrics. He also talks about how the song has more to do with social issues such as abortion as well as what was already mentioned here. | |
| Thrice – The Flame Deluge Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Nice paper there Ysterian. It offered some good explanations. Thanks for posting it. | |
| Thrice – See You in the Shallows Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| That's very interesting natedogg. Thanks for that insight. I had always agreed with rxbandit and lovinthedrummin but the CS Lewis influence may imply a different meaning entirely... A lyrically awesome song in any case. | |
| Thrice – Circles Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| You are really only stating an opinion. Myself, I enjoy Thrice's ambient and slower-tempo songs, and I love how the lyrics usually fit the mood on such songs. Beggars is great just the way it is (in my opinion). I doubt Thrice will ever go back to the Artist-style days though. | |
| Thrice – Daedalus Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| *sorry, Dustin has a daughter, not a son. My mistake. | |
| Thrice – Daedalus Lyrics | 16 years ago |

SoLiDMoNg00se: I just felt that I had to defend the Thrice community here, haha... And many of your points made little sense. Dustin is generally agreed upon to be the lyricist of the band. That doesn't mean the other members get no input, but fans generally give credit to Dustin. It's just easier that way. Besides, I don't see Teppei, Riley, or Ed becoming extremely annoyed because they don't get any credit for them. Any why should the birth of Dustin's son be discounted in his inspiration for this song? Naturally he would be experiencing a lot of different and new emotions related to fatherhood, which could have easily led him back to this story and theme. Finally, it is not the story alone that makes this song so great, it is the emotion and feel of the way it is delivered. That is what I attribute to the band. They took an old tale and gave it life and abstract meaning. Now, you are entitled to your opinion about this song and the band, and that is totally fine. Just don't insult the rest of us for offering our own opinions. |

| If you can't respect other people's views, get off of this site. | |
| Thrice – Broken Lungs Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Totally agree with pushtenkcirrus's thoughts on Thrice's explorations of Freemasonry, up from Vhiessu. Artist had some definite political themes as well. To summarize everything, as I have read all comments, push and NayThin have the meaning down closest I think. Dustin is not so much saying that 9/11 was an inside job, but he is simply pointing out that there are things we, the people, were never told, there are issues that were deliberately hidden in the shroud of that day and the official story. I applaud Thrice for the bravery to write a song like this, knowing they would receive criticism and controversy. Just goes to show what a great band they are. I can't believe anyone would disrespect them for that. | |
| Haste the Day – Porcelain Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| That could be, I can see where you're coming from for sure. But that theory doesn't really make sense when you consider the end of the song, where the girl is burned at the stake after accepting Christ. The lyrics are pretty straightforward there. | |
| Emery – The Weakest Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I think the gun references and also other lines (like the running with scissors) do give a big clue that this is about suicide. Good idea Yix. | |
| Thrice – A Subtle Dagger Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Karatebob, great job. There are a lot of great opinions and ideas on here. I think bob nailed it with the above two posts. Getting specific, pride/human nature is the subtle dagger, imo. | |
| Thrice – To Awake and Avenge the Dead Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
Could be, Catalyst, but I have a couple ideas that could explain the Jesus theory of the song. 1. News broadcast your funeral could be how the media often takes an anti-religious viewpoint. 2. 500 channels focus in, just a guess, but there were supposedly 500 people that witnessed Christ's death. This is probably the weakest correlation, I know. 3. The soil was swift to drink her blood could refer not to Jesus himself but to his love. It makes sense when read after the lines above it, and explains the use of a feminine pronoun. 4. Finally, killing Aristotle could be the fact that belief in a religion requires defying what we see, hear and touch, and looking to the unknown. Denying logic. Killing it, if you will. |

| Killswitch Engage – Holy Diver (Dio cover) Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| lol I agree Rubandu, no one bothered to explain it. I'll give it a shot. The Holy Diver is someone caught up in their own lies- mislead. They "hide in the sun" while never really seeing what life is about, the light. They are too far in "the midnight sea". Good metaphors. They never see "the truth that's hard as steel". Then maybe the writer realizes he is the same way (I'm guessing here, so bear with me) Like in the line, "gotta get away, Holy Diver". If you look at the song this could make sense, but who knows? | |
| Killswitch Engage – Unbroken Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Yes great inspirational song, to take what life throws at you and prevail through it... I thought it was interesting how fear is mentioned so often meaning failure. It's saying, do not fear the unknown, misunderstood, and other things seemingly greater than ourselves. Most of us fear without realizing we are afraid, I think. | |
| Emery – In a Lose, Lose Situation Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Definitely one of my favorite emery songs also. I love how the Question had a great theme to it, every song title answers "Where were you when I was..." for instance, where were you when I was In a Lose, Lose Situation? And like Lindsey said, they have a great message that a lot of people can take inspiration from, Christian or not. And I think you guys pretty much nailed the interpretation on the head, and good job Tomahawk, that was a cool way to look at it. | |
| Thrice – Deadbolt Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
thefisherman: try emery. Anyway, this is a great song, one of the best off of the Illusion of Safety, although all of them are good. And I tend to agree with karatebob about the meaning. |
|
| Emery – Walls Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| That's a different way to look at it, cmart1807. I think Emery did intend it to be about a relationship, but I like what you said, offers a new viewpoint. | |
| Thrice – Betrayal Is A Symptom Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
born2xl I agree with your interpretation. I think that is what Dustin probably had in mind. I love the lyrics to all of the Illusion of Safety... Thrice is awesome. @zacharygarren: calling atheists retarded and logically dumb is why Christians are called judgmental and hypocrites. Just throwing that out there. |
|
| Haste the Day – Ros King Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| It's about loving someone unsaved, and looking them in the eye and knowing that if they were to die they would not go to heaven. It's about trying to tell them the truth before it is too late. I think that is the meaning that they were trying to convey... | |
| Haste the Day – American Love Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| This is a song meanings website. Obviously people are going to have different views. Comparing the rest of Burning Bridges to this lyrically, I would think it is about God rather than a girl. But maybe it is both. Either way, I love the mellow part, very moving. And xxcfl09, Christian music is not just for Christians. That would make the ministry kind of useless, don't you think? I'm glad people of many different backgrounds enjoy Haste the Day. | |
| Anberlin – Retrace Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| This song is beautiful. I am a big Cities fan, but songs like this totally won me over to the new album. So passionate and heartfelt. Anberlin is awesome! | |
| Haste the Day – The Closest Thing To Closure Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I think the lyrics make a little more sense when applied to a relationship, the title, 'Closest thing to Closure', kind of implies a breakup or something. But it is art after all. Interpret it how you like. | |
| Emery – While Broken Hearts Prevail Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
Where do you find this song? |
|
| Emery – Cutthroat Collapse Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| This is awesome. Definitely reminds me of their old stuff- can't wait for the new album too. I read somewhere that Toby said this song was about being in a relationship and making it your whole life, and these kind of relationships usually end up in doom, such a great thing becomes a tragedy. | |
| Haste the Day – An Adult Tree Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Great job WhiteCollarAgent. Totally agree. Just one other thing... If you've seen the album art, it goes with this song. It shows an apple, and when you open the case, on the other side is a skull with worms coming out. The rotten apple bringing death. Powerful message. | |
| Emery – Say the Things (You Want) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I keep hearing "you wanted me when you wanted me" too. Anyways, this song is pretty straightforward for an Emery song. It is about a girl who has manipulated a guy in a relationship, taking advantage of him and leading him on. "I would have always gave in But those late nights and phone calls Whispering everything I'd ever want For what its worth I believed Every word that you said So here is what I will say With these last wasted breaths Take take take take Back your promises and your sweet kisses That I though were only for me" Pretty straightforward. She cheated on him and he became hurt and angry, and the song leaves the listener with that. "for what its worth I believed Every word that you said So here is what I will say With these last wasted breaths Take take take take Back your promises and your sweet kisses That I though were only for me " |
|
| Emery – The Smile The Face Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I love the EP too. Takes them back to their old sound, with hints of their new stuff in there. It was very good. This song reminds me of Walls, but the lyrics aren't as deep or inspiring. That is the only thing about the EP, like jonneh said, lyrically it is not their best. I hope their new album, In Shallow Seas We Sail, is a little more diverse. But anyways this song rocks. | |
| Emery – To Whom It May Concern Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
This song is a little rough, and I can see why they didn't put it on an album. It has grown on me recently though. I think it could be referring to girlfriend or wife, but probably not a breakup. It seems like someone has died, like x-serendipitous said. "All my friends say hello The phone rings, as soft sheets and daylight surround me She's gone, they tell me. Are you listening? For the life of me I can't see Through this haze of sleepless dreaming" These lines in particular imply that someone he loves has passed away. He regrets never saying goodbye, before it was too late. "Light breaks, the morning shades wake but rise no more I could have called her the night before empty broken promises lost I never said goodbye I never had the time I never said goodbye" That's just my interpretation. |
|
| Haste the Day – Porcelain Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Wow nobody has commented yet? This was a powerful song to me... But anyways, I think it is about a guy that loves a witch or satanist. She has been caught and is going to be burned at the stake. (obviously this is a long time ago) "You know you'll burn at the hands of your king As they scream "Let them burn" You know you won't You won't forgive them She crawls through the dirt like a four-legged spider He's there, laying beside her As the serpent's tongue is wrapped around her neck Let them burn Let them burn" He loves her too much to let her go to hell, and he still sees hope for her. "Open all the voiceless souls Into the ears of a traitor I still see a believer The witness is here" He seems to know that he is her last chance at being saved and accepting Jesus. "It seems that which hang men over But I can show them the portal to saviour As empty words to forgive The witness is here" Finally, just before the flames engulf her, she looks to heaven and cries out to God. "Open all the voiceless souls She falls to her knees, and she begs for forgiveness As the Heavens open their gates The wood burns and a fire blazed But he bought back your soul with the blood of the saviour" (I have the lyrics with the cd insert) A beautiful picture of the saving grace of Christ, illustrating that no matter what anyone has done, they can be redeemed. |

| Emery – As Your Voice Fades Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Having lost a very close family member, I can really identify with this song and what he is trying to say. I think for sure it about death and losing a loved one, and not about God... I am a Christian and can see where you are getting your arguments, but like Atreyukidd said, it just doesn't make much sense when really contrasted with the lyrics. And it is definitely not about a girl or a breakup. (Bambamjr2006) But hey, everyone has an opinion. | |
| Emery – Under Serious Attack Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I think you guys are right and it probably is about physical temptations. This is one of my favorite songs on the Weak's End. But I think Emery probably wrote the lyrics to the song in a way so that many people could identify with it. When I first heard the song I simply related it to the "battles" I was fighting in my life at the time. "this is war can I take it anymore i'm falling faster and bleeding more than i have bled before certain death (this blade will carve a purpose) lingers on the other hand (and make you feel defeated) but i will fight you and victory will be mine in the end" So I agree emery had the idea of sexual temptation when writing the lyrics to this song. I take it a different way though. That's the great thing about art, everyone can interpret it a different way. Just another lyrically superior emery song. |
|
| Emery – Ten Talents Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| jackamunda I agree with what you said. I think this song is about a guy who has probably been a christian for a while, and wonders if the work he has done as a christian has amounted to anything. He wonders if it is too late for him to make a difference anymore. That sums up the first part of the song. In the third verse, God is saying come home because I still love you. Then it shifts back to the guy's point of view, where he says It's a slap in the face when I feel my complacency grow, I take for granted the grace that is given to me daily... referring to the grace of God. In the next section, he says nothing can make up for the things I have done, again the guy is feeling he is too far gone for God to save. Finally, at the end, the person realizes that God's love is all we need, and that God will forgive him. I am pretty sure this is correct, because in the cd insert it explained it this way too. Keep in mind this is a Christian band, and though not all of their songs are christian, this one is. | |
