Not really sure of the meaning, but its an interesting track that i didn't like at first, but after a few listens its growing on me. The vocals sound sarcastic to me as if they are mocking something. Maybe its told from a perspective of a young person, like barely a teenager, and hes behaving self destructively (drinking, violence, afraid to show weakness) and thinks it makes him a hard ass like John Wayne but its really just causing him to lose his identity as a child. Can't wait for this album, its been so long. |

this song has the most emotionally charged guitar solo I've ever heard... it always gives me a feeling of weight being lifted off.. similar to the curse being lifted off the werewolf protagonist. |

| King Crimson – The Court of the Crimson King Lyrics

the first two lines of every stanza oppose eachother.. prison moons beings shattered by the sun, keys and shutters, evergreen replacing the flower (replacing beauty with something that is more permanent), and lastly the crying and the joke.. just an observation. the colors are also interesting.. all colors of royalty and power (except gray). There is also a very apocolyptic tone about the song.. and mostly the album in general (schizoid man, epitaph and the album cover).. a warning.. anyways amazing song. As far as prog goes, King Crimson is up there with ELP and Yes imo. Maybe even better.. working on hearing more from em |

| Modest Mouse – Willful Suspension of Disbelief Lyrics

umm the world is not perfect.. and the above arguement about the existence of God and the validity of religion is kind of what this album is about. I was born and raised as a christian but as i learned more about it i started believing less and less in it to the point where i would consider myself agnostic.. i'm not stubborn enough to be athiest nor am i to be religious. There are other explanations for why things happen other than God or Satan. it pisses me off to hear about all the stupid stuff that has happened due to religious beliefs and people going overboard with it. maybe there is a God out there who made everything and maybe there is an afterlife but no one knows.. anyone who says there is is just believing in something they don't know for sure. struggling with religion is all just a nasty parlour trick. I'd rather just exist and experience what comes my way and avoid getting tricks played on me =P |

| Modest Mouse – I Came as a Rat (Long Walk Off a Short Dock) Lyrics
| 16 years ago

my favorite line in this song is the "i don't know but i've been told you never die and you never grow old" and like someone said earlier its used in a couple different songs. I think at the very end of another song on M&A and in Two inch horses (2 faced monsters) off of Everywhere. It doesn't seem Isaac likes the idea of living forever. Liek that could be Gods greatest punishment for us. i think of Two inch horses the most when i hear I came as a rat because of the usage of the same line and i think two inch horses elaborates more on it
You said, "I hope you live forever"
Don't you wish that on me
You said, "Don't be clever"
its like someone is trying to wish the best for the speaker but it really is the worst thing the speaker could have imagined because living forever just means more of the bad in life rather than the good. Its very pesamistic but most mouse songs are kind of like that. The person then just says don't be clever like the speaker is just tryin to be funny, some people could think that to live forever (or the afterlife) is our only goal in life. When really its just to make the most out of what we have. There is nothing greater than living so just go with it. Maybe there is an afterlife or heaven or w/e but noone knows. You shouldn't get your hopes up.
I came as a rat seems to be about reincarnation because its saying all these things he came as. But its always turns to something bad. Life is never always good and thats y brock doesn't want to live forever. Doin the cockroach i guess is the same too with life being just repetitive cycles that seem endless. With alot of his songs Brock just seems to be denying the hope religion gives to us because its better to work with what we know we have here and create our own hope instead of hoping for more in the unknown future. idk thoughts are ramblin on... its what modest mouse and all great music makes me do.

| Modest Mouse – Talking Shit About a Pretty Sunset Lyrics

i guess its about not being thankful for the awesomeness of living like the angry prom queen. This song reminds me not to be sore and negative about the way the world is and to take time to look at a sunset and everything else that is good in life. Talking shit about a pretty sunset is probably one of the best song titles ever. |

I agree with alot of what has been said. Heaven and hell don't exist and u can spend ur entire life searching for them and all the other stuff with religion. The only way to think they exist and basically to have religion/faith is to have a "willful suspension of disbelief" which is basically saying to forget everything u know and just believe. Which some religious people seem to do a little too much when they seem so crazy. Brock is an athiest but i bet he still has something in him that still wanders if theres something more. Someone said somethin about Brock bein more towards agnostic so i don't rly know but the line "I was in heaven, I was in hell, believe in neither but fear em as well", the opening line to doin the cockroach (amazing song)seems to be kinda agnostic.
This might be my favorite mm cd, too bad its so short but it has the best name and album art of all their stuff. I think Everywhere and his nasty parlour tricks is kinda how our very existance is just screwing around with us. Religion and is just a nasty parlour trick i guess. idk... kinda just makes you question a lot... and i love modest mouse for that |

awesome song.. reminds me of the matrix when it says what if life was an elaborate dream or an illusion. I think its saying something about not getting too sucked up into day to day habits and everything you experience in life because some of it might not be real or what u thought it was. its kind of about reflection. Looking at who you are and what u've done and asking if its rly what you want in life. Its saying forget what society wants of you. it doesn't matter, since u'll be alone in the end. all that matters is that you r happy with urself. I could write alot more... but i'm too lazy. There r so many meanings to these lyrics and they r very relatable... trent is a genious |

this song has such catchy drums. It gets stuck in my head alot... as for meanings i agree with other people who said its about not conforming to society or the pigs that r easily manipulated to do whatever higher athority tells them to do. There's probly alot more to it but i think the general meaning is rebellion. |

haunting song... i really like the lines
"A hundred and three is forever when you're just a little kid
So Cyrus Jones lived forever"
a kids view of death is very innocent because they have not experienced what an adult has. They think death will never happen to them and that mortality is nothing to worry about. The ring around the rosey part goes well with childhood. However when it talks about "Little Mikey Carson" dying at such a young age, it is the saddest because there is so much he never got to do in life and he was definantly not ready to die. I think the song has got somethin to do with eventually in life being ready to die. That you would have no regrets upon leaving this life. hes asking the guy to dig his grave so hes accepted that death will happen one day. But i guess he still thinks something will live on when he talks about wanting to feel the rain. idk just wat i get from it. great song

favorite Gorillaz song because of how different it sounds. Its very peaceful even dreamlike like someone said earlier especially with the last line. The song gives a hallucinatory image of walking through a foreign place like Hong Kong and the awe of taking in the strange beauty of the place. The intro with the Chinese instrument is the best and creates the foreign mood for the song that fits with the title. Almost perfect song. |

this song scares me at the end...the loud guitar then the haunting sound that remains after it. I get a picture of a person just hanging there after committing suicide, pale and completely lifeless. Its a horrible image and i hope i never see it in reality. Its an amazing ending to The Downward Spiral where the guy chooses to end his life to save the lives of others he would kill.
NIN=amazing both musically and lyrically |

the most peaceful song i've ever heard, it puts me to sleep or puts my mind at ease. it gives me the picture of floating down a river on a raft in absolute comfort staring up at the starry night sky.
I want to actually do that someday and listen to this song and be at absolute peace. |

i agree with the pop idol thing. it might be about the rise and fall of a young immature pop star who couldn't handle the effects of fame. it could also just be about someone who gets to arrogant or something and think they can handle more than they rly can. I used to always think it had something to do with sex but this makes alot more sense. its amazing how it starts off slow and builds up to the fast part that has an absolutely amazing bass line. definantly one of my favorites |

imo its about how u r promised success as a kid and u work hard for it but it almost never happens. We all have such high hopes for our lives and it can be disappointing when none of it comes true. I think thats what the part about don't be too creative ordering your drinks is about . I like Issac's voice in the beginning, it sounds delirious , kind of like hes lost in a desert. I guess that could go with illusions or mirages of success or w/e. idk. anyways amazin song, one of mouse's best. |
