Josh Ritter – Old Black Magic Lyrics 6 years ago
the singer has lost a lover/partner, which was bad enough, but then other things have happened and the singer wishes for the support his former lover/partner provided

it's a modern blues song, especially as the gnarled guitar outro unwinds

all ancient history, but that comment makes almost no sense in the context of the song - or my comment. just in case you come back in a year or two.

The Replacements – I'll Be You Lyrics 12 years ago
This song was my introduction to the Replacements and I liked the wordplay and the attitude. There wasn't really anything this wry and snotty, or with as much heart, on the radio in 1989. So when I see all these self styled 'mats Purists sneer at this song and this album as being crap, all I really get out of it is that they didn't want the band to succeed commercially - it would have made them look un-cool. Which is really sad - as Slim Dunlap said around that time, Paul Westerberg's songs really did deserve a bigger audience than they've ever gotten.

'boy you would know'

the singer has a friend she's seeing, maybe just to listen, maybe something more, but she still isn't sure she wants out of the abusive/manipulative relationship

... it's possible to spend too much time thinking about these things, isn't it...

i think it's a 'boy you would own'

and 'sucking on dreams'

my best guess on the last is 'collaging girls' (as if he collects them?)

dark, nightmarish song about an abusive relationship, i think. it grabs me somehow.

Hüsker Dü – She's A Woman (And Now He Is A Man) Lyrics 14 years ago
funny, I always thought the song was about a guy who hadn't really grown up until this relationship got really twisted and then fell apart because of either addiction or his attraction to his partner's sister. either one could be the thing her heart could not forgive...

Bruce Springsteen – Open All Night Lyrics 17 years ago
This is sort of the opposite of all the other downbeat loners in the night Springsteen writes about- it has a sense of giddiness that comes with being sleep-deprived and amped up on something or other and motivated to get away from the cruddy job and back to his baby for the weekend.

It's almost funny though how dated the song is- carburetors, pay phones and road maps... practically *all* the answers to trivia questions now.

Death Cab for Cutie – Cath... Lyrics 17 years ago
It's a mismatch- she's afraid it is anyway and the people who know them both think so too. She's doing it because she feels this is as close as she'll get to 'love' and needs to settle before it's 'too late' (maybe she listened to the Killers' When You Were Young once too often). I think it's a stretch to say the guy is abusive- if that was the point, I doubt the song would end "I'd have done the same as you"
