seems more likely that being a meth addict makes you think everything's about meth.
not saying none of modest mouse's songs are, or that it isn't part of the meaning here, but there seems to be more going on than just meth in this one. |

can't believe nobody's said this since you posted it, but in honour of the 12th anniversary of 9/11, let me be the first to tell you that that's really goddamn stupid.
the moon & antarctica (i.e. the album this song was on) came out in june of 2000--as in, more than one full year before 9/11--and all the songs on it were presumably written a good while before then.
not every song is about 9/11, not every song is about kurt cobain, not every song is about jesus. |

it appears in "i came as a rat" (also on this album) and "three inch horses, two faced monsters" (which is where the clip at the end of this song was taken from). and yeah, that fits in with his cynicism and atheism. a lot of his songs are about religion/atheism. |

actually, they don't get rid of it, they cut apart and reassemble the penile tissue to create the new vagina. it's called "vaginoplasty". and uhh, transition is not just "oh hey i have a vagina now nobody can tell". it takes a long time for a male to transition into a female, and odds are the neighbors WILL notice and gossip about it. |

owlsie is fucking retarded and needs to go read a book. the entire point of a sex change is to structurally alter the genitals--FtM sex changes don't magically create working testes, a prostate, and cowper's glands out of thin air, nor do MtF sex changes spontaneously generate a womb and ovaries.
...on a friendlier note, i think you're interpreting it backwards, op--the 'surface meaning' is meant to allude to sex reassignment surgery, but the underlying meaning is that sex--as in, sex-for-pleasure AND sex-for-reproduction--has consequences. as far as i'm aware, amanda palmer isn't against abortion [see also "oasis"] but definitely seems in favor of people taking preventative measures so they won't have to.

| The Dresden Dolls – Ultima Esperanza Lyrics

also, "ultima esperanza" is spanish* for "last hope", probably referring to how so many lonely people, before they completely give up on ever finding love, turn to long-distance/"cyber" relationships, thinking maybe "The One" just isn't in the same city/state/country. so "e-dating" becomes their "last hope".
so, yes, it's "ultima esperanza", not "ultimate esperanza" >.>
*yes, it's grammatically-incorrect--spanish puts adjectives after nouns--but try singing it "esperanza ultima" sometime and you'll see why she chose that phrasing |

It's not -solely- about sex, but there's quite obviously a sexual component to it. But judging from your tone, you seem to feel that sex plays absolutely no part in it, so, by all means, enlighten us--what's it about, then, idiot? |

someone can be more than 'just a friend' without being a girlfriend. although Word Of God [in this case "God" being the guy who wrote the song] says that isn't the case here; it's about his girlfriend staying faithful to him no matter how fucked up he acted. |

this song's meaning in a nutshell: "i miss you, and i feel like my life is completely worthless without you. i'm afraid i'll see you're happier with someone else than you were with me, and i'm more afraid to even talk to you again because i know you hate me, but i just can't stay away, so i'm spying on you--and hoping to see that maybe, just maybe, you miss me too."
...i'm not proud to admit this, but i've been there and done that, so. |

My first guess is that it has something to do with drugs, but...I think it's more like he's just saying "Yeah, I know--something bad happened*, you feel like shit right now, and you don't wanna do anything but sit around. I know how that feels. But you're not going to feel better if you do that, so, come on, let's go do something fun instead."
*I'm inclined to guess it's a breakup, but it could be anything, really. |

By the way, Achory, if you think Obama's socialist, you don't know what the term even means, and should really head back to school until you learn. Obama's a shill, and he isn't changing anything. His so-called "healthcare" plan does nothing to improve healthcare, and overall it's just more of the same fuck-the-people corporatist BS as before (case in point: Deep Horizon).
Which is exactly the phenomenon "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss" describes. Guess what--liberal or otherwise, we all got fooled again.

Well, anyway, the speaker's singing to his mother, apologising for not being a better son. And now he's alone and--if the last lines are any indication--dying...basically, he just wants to see his mom one last time before he's dead. And he doesn't get to. |

That's not what that specific line means. "Moral Majority" was the name of a fundamentalist Christian lobbying group in the '80s. In a broader sense, the name can be applied to right-wing Christians as a whole or, indeed, anyone who tries to force morality and/or politics on everyone else. In short, to Hell with anyone who tries to make everything into a moral issue.
Green Day was political before American idiot :) |

It would certainly fit in with an interpretation on the "Psychedelic Furs, The" page for this song--according to that one, some guys drugged, kidnapped, and raped her, then sold her clothes and such.
Though that one's a bit -too- dark for the time period, IMO...I mean, this was originally the '80s, when you could be forced to testify before Congress for writing a song about throat surgery. But given the Dresden Dolls' lyrical darkness in the regular songs, it certainly makes a lot more sense this way. |

| Information Society – Mirrorshades Lyrics
| 16 years ago
|
It's full of allusions to cyberpunk literature--particularly Gibson's works, it would seem. "She" might be Molly Millions, one of the first and most famous wearers of the mirrored sunglasses that became the symbol of cyberpunk.
Expanding upon that, this might even be about the short story "Johnny Mnemonic"; the title character made a living by storing data in his implants that could only be accessed by the recipient's password. He never knew what it was at any time during most jobs, but at the end of the story, he and Molly decide to salvage as much of the data as possible and use it to blackmail his last client.
Or it could just be using the cyberpunk theme as a motif to convey how smitten with the mirrorshade-wearing girl the singer is. |

If it is "Spider-Man"...
Well, when you're a kid, you don't think about mortality...
Kids love superheroes, and Spider-Man's a superhero...
Also, he's much more human than Superman, since he isn't invincible or immortal.
Even Spidey dies, if the writers call for it =P |
