Frontman Jim James explained the title "Evil Urges" to AOL: "It's kind of all tied into religion confusing people's morality and people always wanting to think that something is either bad or good, whereas in reality I feel that most stuff is more confusing than that. So basically, it's about being confused and feeling that most people are searching for some kind of answer that sometimes people think religion can bring. And lots of times, people will do things that they think are good in the name of religion, but oftentimes they're destructive for the world, although people think they're really being good - or maybe they are being good, 'cause I'm kind of confused about the whole thing." James told Mojo magazine May 2008 that the album title was one of many on a sheet of paper, but was "winking its eye at me. Some people were concerned because they thought Evil Urges sounded like a death metal record. Once people hear it they'll realize it's kinda the opposite." |

A lot of Strokes song are about relationships/one night stands/ or just situations with women in general. I think this is no different. I could be way wrong about this but it's just how I read it, this album comes at you at different angles (haha) but this song is my favorite. |

I feel like the Slug is describing someone else in the first verse (Which could be anyone, not just Slug). It's someone who wants her and he's describing this person situation But he always did his best to get under the surface Not a saint, not a serpent He just wanted everyone to be impressed with him as a person --Then this girl maybe him happy. So when she came along with the sunbeam Self-esteem stopped making nothing outta somethings Leaving the scene was unseen, I mean It was the first time he ever felt the need to keep the gun clean Do the math He knew he had to choose a path Gotta get that girl, gotta make her laugh Gotta shake the past and move forwards Gotta make this last, it feels gorgeous -- then he goes onto why they can't be together. But she had a lover in the mid-west Never figured out how to get him off her thick chest Just like that everything is gone -- She can't let go of this guy she with even though he treats her like shit. She got a man but he thinks hes a star And it feels like she has to compete with the bar She keeps up her guard but it seems so hard Momma never told her she would see those scars Every night hes out doin who knows whom While she cries along like a new show tune Last call past, is he comin home soon? Or is he gonna run away with the dish and the spoon? -- He gives himself hope that maybe they'll be together. She'll realize she don't want that clown Leave those shoes at the lost and found He wont catch on until shes not around After somebody else already locked that down -- I think the last verse describes this other guy she's with as well as her thoughts on him and their situation. -- The chorus itself I think is also this guy who likes her, he's saying he wants to give his love but it isn't enough, he thinks its love but he thinks she probably won't feel the same way. He assures himself that even if she stays with this guy or goes onto someone else, he'll remember how he felt about her and tells her to go on and be free/happy. Everything is all I have to give you And I'm afraid it ain't enough And you're not so young that you believe me Just because I say its love And even if they come to steal you tomorrow I'll know my smile was yours Go ahead and chase your dreams and your freedom Just how I interpreted it and I think it fits... |
