| Bat for Lashes – Dark Time Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m01VUC3UZmU I don't know anymore beyond the fact that it is a demo that was released as a b-side with 'Let's Get Lost' for a physical record release. I have a hunch that it is possibly an early demo (pre-Fur and Gold) due to similar references within other early works such as 'Horrorshow'. Someone has also pointed out to me that musically the intro and ending have a similarity to 'What's A Girl To Do?'. I can't say I hear it myself, but it may have been inspiration. |

| Warpaint – Krimson Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| This an Burgundy have really similar lyrics, the titles are based around similar colours, both in different styles. This one is totally more upbeat and feisty. I remember reaing it was played in a style or at least in homage to another group they liked. i'm not really sure what I'm exactly getting at here...just felt I'd chip in with a few points. | |
| SALEM (USA) – Oftentimes Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| Aside from the last part of the song: Oftentimes= Dirt. | |
| Fever Ray – The Wolf Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
It's definitely "We took you out From your mother’s womb". Also something that's interesting is that although the bits where she's wailing are supposed to sound like a wolf and whatnot, it kind of reminds me a little of the hook from Danielle Dax's 'Big Hollow Man'. Dax played the Wolf girl in 'The Company of Wolves', which this new Red Riding hood film *ahem* heavily borrows from. Obviously it's not a direct or deliberate thing, but I just thought it was kinda interesting. Maybe Fever Ray is a Dax fan, who knows? |

| Florence + the Machine – Swimming Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
It's very obviously about falling off the tracks and having an old song/singer bringing back memories and getting her to pull herself together again because of this rediscovery. I think she wanted to get back in touch with herself but couldn't, began rejecting help and letting herself stagnate. Without being concious of doing so she began to get herself back to reality all due to this 'song'. It's no secret that Flo had a bit of a turbulent teenagehood and I feel this is a homage to coming out of it. It's a sweet song in a way and I'd love to know who this singer and their songs are. |
|
| Bat for Lashes – Circle Song Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
Also I think the chorus may be "I am loved" Not certain on that. I get the "I am" part, the the next bit just sounds like random singing in a way but I'm sure I deducted a word from it. |
|
| Florence + the Machine – Ye Olde Hope Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| There's another recording with a violin and less heavy on the drums (known as 'Tear Out My Tongue') inwhich at the end she sings 'I don't have to sit down and behave because my darling I've been saved'. | |
| Florence + the Machine – Between Two Lungs Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I don't know if anyone has noticed this and it's nothing major that contributes to the meaning of the song, but when all the music has finished she shouts 'yay'. I really think this song is the epitome of the album. | |
| Bat for Lashes – Siren Song Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| One of the things that intriuges me about this song is who's point of view is who's? I mean, naturally it is possible to suppose that Natasha is singing all the kind parts and Pearl all about destruction. But the purpose of a siren is to lure a sailor/ship to death with their beauty and song- all the sweetness she shows him is a guise. | |
| Bat for Lashes – Circle Song Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
I have a hunch that this song was one of the earliest Bat For Lashes songs, possibly a demo, it's very much in the Fur and Gold vein of imagery- knights, horses, deserts, children etc. (possibly an early version of Horse and I?) Also I think it's slightly inspired by 'Le Petit Chevalier' by Nico in a way, not just through the use of the French language, but once again through the images created. Despite what the submitter requested about this being translated by one who is fluent in French, I did use a translator online (though I'm not fluent,I have studied French and could pick up quite a few words, I just needed that extra help)simply because these lyrics have been missing/not detailed for quite a while, and I felt it was important to have some form of interpretation rather than none. Anyway, enjoy: So I have the story of a strong girl A girl who struggles with love To fulfill its mission She said that the childish men Are not good for me Then she held up the ice And put the jewels in my eyes And I have a little story about The boy with the free spirit This is my brother, is a pioneer He said "you are everything and everything is yours" Together they repair my broken heart And singing songs circular Together they are my family And with them I'm dead "You're a big black horse" she said "And a little knight will find you Walking the streets, traversing deserts It will, for you are love" |

| Tristania – Sanguine Sky Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
Wow, has nobody got that it's about vampires? Well not vampires per say, but probably a sanguinarian. You know, one of those people that are actually convinced that they're a vampire or an 'emotional vampire'. I get the feeling that she is one of them and she has convinced him that she really is a vampire, though he remains sceptical. It kinds of reminds me a little of 'The Lady Of The House Of Love" by Angela Carter. I'm not too sure why. I think this album has a strong theme of belief within it, or at least a sense of something being built up again. I remember reading an interview inwhich a member of the band said that Illumination and Ashes has a link, and I think whereas Ashes deconstructed alot of things, new links, ideas and faiths are formed in Illumination. |

| Patrick Wolf – The Halcyon Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Actually looking at upcoming Disney projects, can't really see what film it could be for...but who knows what is coming up in the pipeline. | |
| Patrick Wolf – The Halcyon Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Thanks! Sounds rather interesting... | |
| Patrick Wolf – The Halcyon Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
Haven't really had time to dwell much upon the song but did a bit of reasearch and wiki came up with a Greek myth (quite apt really as it sounds very much like the early Theseus). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcyone So all I can say it's probably about this, though does anyone know what the deal is with the song? I mean, is it going to be on the next album or something? I don't really follow Patrick much these days so I don't have any idea. |
|
| Patrick Wolf – The Tinderbox Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| You could tell it was him though, yeah? He has a particular way of communicating through the internet, and so it wasn't hard to tell. | |
| Bat for Lashes – Moon and Moon Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I guess it's understandable that the song could be interpreted in such fashion, I couldn't comment on Natasha Khan's sexuality, but it really is obvious it's about her ex-boyfriend. | |
| Bat for Lashes – Sleep Alone Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
This song has a 1980s feel to it. Natasha Khan (aka Bat For Lashes) explained to BBC's Newsbeat: "Well, I've always been an '80s girl, and I think [on] the first record I was quite shy really and I wanted to just keep it how I'd been playing it in my bedroom. I grew up listening to The Cure and I loved early Madonna and Prince and all of that stuff, so I think what prompted me was just probably having more confidence to kind of reach out and reveal even more of myself and what I love and not be too shy about it." Just a quote from Natasha commenting on the song. |
|
| Florence + the Machine – Girl with One Eye Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Originally done by The Ludes, Florence was dating a member of the group. My Boy Builds Coffins is about him. | |
| Nico – Ari's Song Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
Nico's relationship with her son, Ari was incredibly strained due to the issues of her drug addictions and his paternity. Later on when the two were reunited, it was said that they had a very strange relationship, not like mother and child because of being rather estranged from one another for so long. I feel this song is a bitter apology from Nico to Ari. He was (I think) about 7/8 at the time of the recording, and the relationship that formed between the two of them was pretty much set. Essentially at the core of the song is Nico disconnecting herself from him, telling Ari to get on with his life and forewarning him of future dissapointment. There isn't really a sense of a maternal feeling from Nico. In a way it kind of conjures up a Moses-like scenario. But alos, very much like the story of Moses is a mother sacrificing her relationship with the child, for it's benefit. |

| Bat for Lashes – Howl Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
Of course, but it was from that time when she wasn't really publicly giving out lyrics and also this is a B-side, so yeah it isn't going to be a priority. EnjoyTheMelon, you got her email? There was an image of a demo cd with an email adress on it, that I've supposed was probably hers. But I've never thought about emailing it...that would be a bit creepy to me... |
|
| Bat for Lashes – The Big Sleep Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| The whole sleeping pills and sleep suggestion, might not necessary allude to death, but a state in which the character can be brought back to Natasha. I mean, she had to bring Pearl back for the album, so it makes you wonder, is she actually dead? | |
| Bat for Lashes – Two Planets Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
I was reading some recent interviews with her and she mentioned quite a bit how she wanted to just dress up and be someone else, as she had seen so many other people do and that Pearl was a symbol for an kind of old fashioned NYC feeling that she used to sense. From that it seems that she's also addressing that she is also just Natasha completely-I can't quite get across what I mean by that as I've said it too blunt and it now means something different. But it's like when you rehearse for a theatre production and you come to terms with your character and such, it kind of takes over a bit to the point where you've adpoted the features of the role that they become a part of yourself. When you think about it at first it's like 'Is this something I do/say? Or am I just doing it in character?' but when you consider it more it becomes 'No, this is me. At the end of the day it's essentially me.' The suspended belief changes, it doesn't go, but it becomes something different and hard to describe. I hope that's clear, though that kind of makes me think I should have taken up psychology too, not just drama :/ |
|
| Nico – Das Lied Der Deutschen Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I've heard that she had Nazi sympathies. But growing up in what circumstances she did and such, she was always a little...messed up? I dunno, she had a alot of issues. | |
| Nico – Le Petit Chevalier Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| If you listen very carefully you can hear someone (most likely Nico herself as it is a womans voice) prompting Ari. It is particularly audiable before the first 'J'irai te visiter'. | |
| Bat for Lashes – Seal Jubilee Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I think that 'out of love' thing might be human concern. The black snow is possibly a metaphor for pollution/destruction. When she describes it being froze out of love I think it means that it is so damaged, so beyond something in our control that we essentially abandon it, stop trying to save it and let it end. | |
| Patrick Wolf – Theseus Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Yeah, it's interpretation has changed slightly due to the last part. Though it is essentially him questioning 'why are you doing this?'. I think Patrick and the character of Theseus became slightly meshed together-he was up so high, had it all but was letting it slip away and overwhelm him. | |
| Bat for Lashes – Prescilla Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I think she's whispering the start of the first verse, or at least I think so. It sounds like that. But there are loads of bits and pieces like that on F and G, and I've only heard a few little things on Two Suns too. Either on Sad Eyes or Wizard (can't remember) you can hear someone making slight noises in the background, not sure what but someone else is there. On Good Love there's a really loud cough part way through. Not too sure if there's anything else...the city noises at the start of Glass? I tend to listen to music with headphones on, therefore I normally pick up things like this. | |
| Tristania – Endogenisis Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| The title is spelled differently to the only form of the word I could look up. Endogenesis is a development or growth from within. This is about someone trying to make a desperate bid for freedom and an act of defiance. What they are running from spurns them forward. Whatever this thing is I'm not sure, it could be religion, love, slavery. All we know is that it is an opressor. This opressor is being decieved as part of the process of freedom and they want the truth. I think it will be derived in a posibly cruel and humiliating fashion due to the mention of bits and pieces...maybe even torture. The opressor is also showing a more compassionate side. It tries to persuade the person that they are fooling themself. The person continues their effot to escape, but then opessor is too stong and once again they find themself in captivity. | |
| Bat for Lashes – Peace Of Mind Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
Look at this and look at us We wonder,oh, we're wandering And I don't like to say we're lost Try my best with leading us I was struck by the narrator refering to more than one person, which makes me think that the two beings of herself are being addressed- especially due to this song being primarily about reflection upon solitude. Build a ladder to the sky Sit up there and say 'Oh my! Does looking down make me a Queen? With all the sorrow that I've seen' She begins daydreaming, she cuts herself off and lets her imagination take her somewhere else. She is watching and observing. In this role she places herself in the familar spot of the queen (which as I've mentioned was who she played on moon and moons album, but I'm curious as to why she keeps going back to it...unless she views the queen as someone who is wise and powerful, but not all about those factors- I mean think about how a queen contrasts with a king, or a princess...) and cuts herself off. She can look and judge without anyone knowing. And if I ever get back down... Find a map that takes me back Through the wounded, through the wars To a time that came before if she ever breaks from the constant watching, she will get to a place that came before the heartbreak (possibly to Daniel). With a map she will always have the knowledge to get to that place. To hover-board into the Sun And bring back when my time is done A mother for this childless world And an arrow of light for every boy and girl The sun is essentially a creator and the nuturing force of this earth. Maybe Natasha believes that the soul will unite with a higher force (the sun) after death and that the light she will create as part of this being will be her children. I also view this as perhaps a maternal tug. I read in an interview that she'd love to be a mother (this was dated summer 08, so maybe the split was taking or had just taken place) but she'd never find the time, or that she couldn't even look after a cat. When you daydream, your mind can take you anywhere you wish. Natasha is an imaginative person who looks to fantasy and I get the feeling that she recieves 'peace of mind' from being deep in thought that being alone can provide. When I think about it, I feel that way too sometimes. By the way, does anybody actually like this song or what? |
|
| Bat for Lashes – Wilderness Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Well now, I did some relistening and I got the feeling this song was meant to be a part of Fur and Gold, not Two Suns. But now you've mentioned that, I think I'm doing a U-turn on this song. | |
| Bat for Lashes – I Saw A Light Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I think that the song in the beginning might be a hymn. Not totaly sure, but I really think I've heard it somewhere else. If I find it, I'll put it here. | |
| Bat for Lashes – Daniel Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
I think the video kind of relates to the chorus...when she's in a bad state of mind or feeling a little blue (the weird balloon people are possibly a physical depiction of this) she seeks comfort in the idea of Daniel (Daniel Larusso is a symbol for all that innocent love stuff)who she is reunited with at the end. Also someone mentioned the thing about the Wizard of Oz? Yeah, I totally picked that up when I first heard this and the reference to the emerald city in Glass. |
|
| Bat for Lashes – Prescilla Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Has anyone else noticed her whispering during the opening beats? Listen to the song loudly with headphones on and I'm sure you'll hear it too. I think she's just going over the first few lines, but it's definitely there. | |
| Bat for Lashes – Two Planets Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
Celestial twins, night and day, sun and moon, positive and negative, pearl and natasha. 'Show me moonlight on the sunrise I've seen so many planets dancing I've seen too many people hiding Show me sunset and I won't forget That I am one of two planets dancing I am part of two planets dancing' She wants to understand these two sides of herself and discover them-there are many ideas about this and she is facing them head on rather than burying them. She is coming to terms with the two halves. 'Shallow man! Sign your name' On my sun!' The man in her relationship (W I'm guessing), hurt Natasha and left his mark on her life. Perhaps the split was a result of something trivial? 'The song of Solomon Died in the battleground The song of Solomon Died in love's battleground' everything she supposed about this love was crushed by her lover, Pearl points this out to her (notice how her voice changes as she sings this?) at this point the two begin to develop an understanding of the issue... 'I am full Shattered by this sailing tim For all your suffering by night Oh warm, but under bright And life is so much dark and light When day cannot exist without a night And you are not separate from me I am a heart that's full of life' Natasha begins to reflect on this duality-she is hurt but her other half feels possibly reunited upon this. Pearl begins to state that, yes Natasha doesn't really understand her, but she's still very much there when Natasha is acting 'normal'. She is the other half of Natasha-the moon, the negative, the night. She is a part of her and she is real. 'And to be shared On this night Feel my hands Feel my life For the Sun And the stars Are my Mother And my sister I know where the form is changing I know that the stars will follow me.. ' They will begin to understand one another, Pearl's physicaltiy and emotions will be made clearer to natasha. The sun and the stars are linked with the moon...Pearl is linked with others. Not herself but perhaps the idea of the negative. Something is changing... The music adds to a sense that this battle/understanding are taking place out of body...up in space...out of this realm... |
|
| Bat for Lashes – Moon and Moon Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
A bear is a symbol of aggression, but also when you consider the cuddly toys they can represent protection/security (think about the emotional attatchment and feelings of your own cuddly toy if you have one. Maybe that's the kind of person she distinguished her boyfriend to be. I also think the bear/bat idea comes from native american spirit guides...I know she's quite interested in mythology. Although it's not in this song, notice how she uses the idea of a Queen alot too? In Moon and Moons album, she plays the part of the queen and W is the king, it's mentioned in her dedication on two suns too. I think this relationship was one of the most important events of Natasha's life so far and possibly even brought her to this stage. While this album is tinged with sadness and confusion, I think there's a lot of understanding and gratitude to W. |
|
| Bat for Lashes – Wilderness Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| The lyrics of this song kind of feel like a mix of some previous pieces, through ideas such as the armour, queen, sea and the lost companions in the sky. But overall I actually think it might be the end of the adventure embarked upon in 'Horse and I', or even the start of something new. But the imagery does symbolise death/transition...maybe Natasha is going to try something new, lyric or sound-wise. Who knows? | |
| Kate Bush – Ne T'enfuis Pas Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
I come like a cat By the black night. You await And I fall In your white wings la-la-la.. And I fly And I flow As a feather. If the big eyes of my God did not keep me, I would fly you. Not you some fled! You have wings, The strength to leave me. You are in the sky as an angel, the-it-it And I am afraid That the sky resumes You. If the big eyes of my God did not keep me, I would fly you. I come like a cat By the black night. (not too ceratin about the last part, it translated funny) |

| Nico – Abschied Lyrics | 16 years ago |

Departure I confess is myself its spirit a longing consumed its face that shadows ermattet, It has moved itself not in the trauma finally its clamps In the howling jubilation, I recognize await you who breaks me the holy peace; its silent mouth its sleeping breast the desire (done via online translator) |

| Nico – Mütterlein Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
I may be myself dear small mother now finite with you the longing and the loneliness selecting in bliss The cradle is changes your homeland dress floating your glory in bliss your Herzeleid and grasps into the winning flood in Really badly done via an online translator, but hopefully the jist of it is kind of clear. |

| Bat for Lashes – Glass Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| The coat of colours is also present in the song of solomon. Not 100% certain on it, but I'll check it out. | |
| Bat for Lashes – Pearl's Dream Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
There was another song that was sung on tour last year called Pearl Dreams, not Pearl's Dream, as shown through this youtube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpVgjZSlyVw Anyway, turns out it's from the film 'The Night Of The Hunter', 1:54 in to the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFzTBPy7nl8 I personally found it quite interesting. |
|
| Bat for Lashes – Moon and Moon Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| It's actually 'Braid our hair together' rather than 'better here together'. | |
| Bat for Lashes – Good Love Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| True, but I wouldn't say this song is completely devoid of sex. It has got a lot of words that could be translated into that context, regardless of state of mind. I mean, christ, Fur and Gold had it's fair share of sex, just because this is a more personal doesn't mean Natasha Khan would censor herself.I think there is probably a blur of the barriers of love and lust in this track. | |
| Patrick Wolf – Hard Times Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| When I saw him play this live in 2007, there was a line like 'kill the king and crown the witches'. Obviously it hasn't made it onto the final cut, but I quite liked it. | |
| Patrick Wolf – The Tinderbox Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
http://www.surlalunefairytales.com/boardarchives/2003/aug2003/tinderbox.html It's legit. |
|
| Bat for Lashes – Glass Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
Also at the end of the chorus it's not ride it's 'But we're light and light and light and light and light!' Another piece of additional information: 'I will rise now and go about the city and the streets, and in the broad ways I will seek him whom my soul loveth: I sought him but I found him not. The watchmen that go about the city found me: to whom I said, Say ye him him whom my soul loveth?' Song Of Solomon 3:2,3. |
|
| Patrick Wolf – Vulture Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I thought that this was just generally about how whilst touring he was pretty wrecked and that the vulture(s) were people who wanted something for him. Satanic sex acts eh? Wow, I think that's weird on the basis that Patrick isn't at all religious. Still whatever floats his boat. | |
| Bat for Lashes – Pearl's Dream Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| It probably is nights, seeing as this person got most of the lyrics wrong (no offence). I'm curious about the machine which she mentions. I think it's about Pearl wanting some recognition. I'll have a proper analyisis of it after some re-listening. | |
| Bat for Lashes – Two Planets Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
'Shallow men, sign your name on my soul The song of Solomon died in the battleground' Not 100% on the bit about soul but that's how I've heard it. Pretty certain about the song of solomon part however. |
