When I first listened to this song I thought it was this guy breaking up with a girl by explaining he has feelings for someone else. Someone he's had feelings for for a while, but she doesn't notice him or the other guys who like her. And the girl he's dumping is saying she understands, she'd do the same. And he's seeing other girls as opportunity to move on but he let's the opportunities pass. but i wasn't quite sure what they meant by "that's not the only lie I told you" or "I think she saw through it". Or even in that context how opening the door to opportunity would fit because he keeps closing the door and then an idea hit me.
I think he has given up on trying to stay away from her or see other people
"I stop trying to write the things I don't like and start going back to where I'd been before"
and he goes back to her, and is trying to find an opportunity to tell her how he feels, but every time he gets a chance he chickens out.
"opportunity knocks, knocks, knocks open the door, I think she saw through it, I see through myself, another chance gone, won't get many more"
and that explains the lie he's talking about. And she's in denial by refusing to see what he's trying to tell her.

love this song. it's about being in love with someone but feeling too insecure or too afraid to go after it the way you should.
to me it sounds like, the guy is slowly ruining things between him and his girlfriend. He loves his girlfriend, but his insecurity or not being "good enough" keeps ruining things. And he's trying to save himself from ruining the relationship and losing the girl he loves, but he doesn't know how to get over his issues. That's why he's trying to reassure her by telling her not to worry, and their love is true.... but his issues are getting in the way.

I have 2 Theories.
The first- He is in love with a girl who is cheating on him. He knows she's cheating, but can't leave her because he loves her. When he's faced with undeniable proof he tries to stay calm, because he doesn't want to confront her with it. He's tired of asking her what she wants, and seeing her with other guys.
The Second- he's in love with his best friend... maybe it's his ex. and she cries to him about other guys, and sleeps around. And it kills him, but he can't leave her alone.
The first seems the most obvious. but the second seems the most reasonable. at least to me. |

i think bueller84 is on the right track. i mean, if he cheated but still wanted to be with her then why would he have to "tear apart the ties that bind", because if she was the one tearing apart the ties, then she wouldn't have forced a smile like she's okay... she'd have walked away and never looked back...And weeks and hours would be just as bleak, because he knows he's going to hurt her.
but i think, he is no longer in love with the girl, or at least is curious to see what else is out there because he isn't necessarily happy in the relationship. She's crying and asking what she did wrong, or why he's ending it. And he's crying because he's hurting her, and even if he no longer loves her, he cares enough not to want to break her heart. That's why he's telling her to ask for help if she gets too sad.
He wants her to yell at him, and break his nose. He wants her to get mad, not sad, but she doesn't because she still loves him. And the more he has to explain to her why he's ending it, the more it hurts her.
It's brilliant. this song is absolutely amazing. |

This may be WAY off, but I get the impression they are at a wedding, and the band looks really cool and trendy, but actually, is really horrible. And the song is about the experience.

since they're only a wedding band, it probably isn't their main profession. |

I love this song. This is EXACTLY what happened with my ex. I was so crazy about him, but we kept fighting. 2 years after the breakup we were STILL having the same fight, and at first, I felt like it was worth it.... but each time we had the same fight, I felt further and further away from him. I would try to reason with him, and each time he would disregard it. Then he would come back, and say he was sorry and how much I meant to him.... and I would forgive him... and he'd do it again.
This last time, something just clicked. And I realized that I'm ready... I'm ready to be done with him. I couldn't have cut him out of my life before (I tried, it didn't work), but now I feel like I can. I'm ready to "fall" out of love with him, I'm ready for him not to call. I'm ready to be done.

I can't decide if it's about a girl trying to solve all her relationship problems by manipulating him with sex, and the guy wants to ACTUALLY deal with them, and he turns the tables on her or a guy who is trying to convince his gf to sleep with him, and she eventually gives in but in a way that shows that she just doesn't want to fight anymore and that she still doesn't want to... I'm leaning toward the 2nd but I read this thing making an argument for the first and that makes sense too, it's just more figurative and the 2nd seems more literal... |

They still act like a couple, but they both know the relationship isn't as good as it used to be (we lay together just not too close, how close is close enough). And although he knows the relationship isn't good he doesn't want to let her go because a part of him still loves her, and he doesn't want to be left. You know how horses have to be broken? I don't think it's about a relationship. I think it's about life and situations in the world. With things going so fast and out of control. The bubble is ignorance. People being in their own bubble, oblivious to what is going on in the rest of the world. The confidence part, I'm not quite sure about, but I suspect it's about having confidence in our ability to turn things around if we try. |

I don't think this song is so much about someone dying. I think it's more about feeling like everything is pointless; we're all going to die someday, so what's the point in getting out of bed in the morning- type thing. That's cool about Vedder's mom. I didn't know that. I always thought it was about a woman in an abusive relationship anyway. I think this song is about a girl who left her boyfriend because she thought he treated her badly. Then she realized she was blowing everything out of proportion, and that she missed him. She "hears what she wants to" in the way that she only hears the bad things he's saying... she only hears him criticizing her, even when he's not. The guy is trying to convince her to stay. But she (hearing like she wanted to) thought he was saying stay not because he loved her but because he was afraid to be alone. so she left. and now she sees how stupid she was being and regrets it. |

TasChiBandGirl, that is brilliant. I hadn't thought of that. I always thought, and still do, that the song is about chasing after someone. i think he's in love with his friend, and the his friend but pretends not to... so he's trying to keep up with them so that one day when he gets the nerve to tell him, maybe they can be together. He's keeps trying to tell his friend, hint that he loves him and gets scared, but then feels like he wasn't clear enough when his friend pretends not to understand... then again that's a very literal meaning and REM's lyrics usually have deeper lyrics.
I feel like if my life had a soundtrack, this song would be track 1. |

This song is definitely about a guy trying to get his girlfriend to forgive him for cheating. It sounds like he had cheated before, but she forgave him. And although he loves his girlfriend, he cheated again, and she found out or he told her, expecting her to forgive him again, but she couldn't. He's trying to convince her to stay like she did the last time since he knows she still loves him.
This song is amazing. Snow Patrol really are lyrical geniuses. |
