I use this song to illustrate what postmodernism is. They're proclaiming the death of disco, funk and rock and roll in a song that uses disco inspired beats, funk inspired bass and rock and roll inspired guitar. The song itself is a "remodel" of all it says is dead. Beyond that, the statement that "everything has been done" is central to postmodernism. Postmodernism is even reflected in the in music video: they're performing in front of a screen with constantly changing images; it's all surface; everything is just a reproduction of something else. The most postmodern part is that they're complaining about the postmodern condition while simultaneously propagating and indulging in it. I know this is academic and pretentious but i've been thinking about it all day. |

I think it sounds like a child being drowned Perhaps by her mother, based on the sounds i hear throughout the song: "Mommy" is heard a lot, around 2:01 i hear "mommy i'm okay," as if she survived the first round of drowning. almost clearly at 2:27: "mom! mommy!" and again at 2:40. at 2:44 i hear "NO! NO!" as if she has suddenly realized that her mother is trying to drown her. |

This song always made me thing of Lord of the Flies. Probably just because it has aspects of survival ("In the middle of nowhere","we're looking for brushwood",) and childishness ("surprised by the rain We're stumbling, tripping home again"). Also mention of the animal (the best) and finding the little man (at one point the find a dead parachutist). There are lots of lines that contradict this interpretation, especially the mention of 1991, but it was just something I found myself repeatedly thinking of when listening to this song. |
