| Alissa Moreno – Far From Here Lyrics | 14 years ago |
When I hear this song, I see a soldier sitting alone on a cold desert night, looking into the dark, lonely sky, waiting and wondering about what hells he must survive before he might return to his heaven. And in his head, there's a beautiful voice that keeps him sane, reminding him to keep walking that line, because eventually it will lead him home. Then, when I read the lyrics, I can see the beauty of the song's universal meaning. Whatever your difficulties might be, remember that good exists. Strive for it. |

| U2 – Bad Lyrics | 16 years ago |
If they should ask well maybe they'd Tell me what I should say True colors fly in blue and black Through silken sky and burning flak Colors crash, collide in bloodshot eyes The music continues it's march as the protagonist struggles with the knowledge of his friend's losing his grip on life... Our hero is confused, he wants to help, but doesn't know how - True friends are there day or night, in peacetime and war,... and still, the other takes solace in one more beautiful rush for his haggard body. |

| John Lennon – Working Class Hero Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I wondered about Lennon's meaning behind the line "a working class hero is something to be." And I've decided he was being sincere. To see the truth, and to choose to struggle against difficulties in order to create a better situation is heroic. Folk heroes endure. |

| The Decemberists – Sons and Daughters Lyrics | 16 years ago |
So how do you write a song? I know little of The Decemberists, but I really like this song. The order of these steps, I think, may be transposed. I'm still learning. You create music that you like. You play it over and over. You learn what feelings and ideas it invokes within you. You share the music with your collaborators. You incorporate their ideas and feelings and the music may change a little. You write down the ideas that have been inspired until you are satisfied with the structure. And hopefully it has become beautiful. A beautiful piece of writing, as these lyrics are, when separated from the music (though they are much the richer when lifted up with the music) has more layers of ideas than even the writer(s) had in mind. Because language is imperfect. It is how we try to express that which is within our minds. This discussion is beautiful. All these ideas from minds all over the world, inspired by beautiful words and music. And so I will add to this thread: I think the authors may have written about all of these places and times that have been spoken of (those that they are aware of); they've woven the pieces of these narratives into a tapestry that is this idea they wish to share - a journey to a wonderful place on the horizon where the fear and sadness of days gone by is forgotten, and the dreams of the coming times inspire hope. |

| Pearl Jam – Do the Evolution Lyrics | 16 years ago |
There is no better or worse, only different. I make my choices, you make yours, and they make theirs. The algorithms of existence will process the data, a change will take place, and another moment - with all of the infinite perspectives from which it will be viewed - will exist. I exist. I perceive my world. Within my world are others. My existence is not static. My consciousness begat better and worse. You have yours and they have theirs. And sometimes we share, and sometimes we are opposed. And the world continues, until it doesn't. Or I don't. It's evolution, baby. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122178211966454607.html |

| Victoria Vox – C'est Noye Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Many songs are about freedom. But this imagery of choosing the wide-open sea, the unknown, letting go of the land you knew, reaches to a different level. And the music takes you there. It feels like being adrift, yet still knowing everything will be alright. |

| Coldplay – Viva la Vida Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Keep in mind Ecclesiastes, it has all been done before. Know the past, for it will be so again in the future. A reflection of the past in the present. See what is happening in your world now, and understand it because you saw the process unfold before. Our hero had good intentions, but things didn't play out as he had hoped. But it's all good, it's the life we live. |

| Glenn Frey – Part Of Me, Part Of You Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I thought of Richard Bach, and his words and themes when I first heard this song many years ago. | |
