I think it's about a couple who fights and then break up, but realize they're happier apart.
Actually, I think it's about a couple who moves away from their problems and are happier THERE.
I think it's about war. Soldiers wanting to come home and their loved ones here thinking about them.
It's about being in any difficult situation, and knowing that if we can get through it, that we'll be able to look back at it and realize how lucky we were to get through it; and be happier for it.
When I hear this song, I see a soldier sitting alone on a cold desert night, looking into the dark, lonely sky, waiting and wondering about what hells he must survive before he might return to his heaven. And in his head, there's a beautiful voice that keeps him sane, reminding him to keep walking that line, because eventually it will lead him home.
Then, when I read the lyrics, I can see the beauty of the song's universal meaning. Whatever your difficulties might be, remember that good exists. Strive for it.
