* Ain't no place for to hide
* At an orgy of grooms and bride. At the scene of the suicides.
* He will awake from his dreams. Find his way in these honey beams. Find a way to the cream of creams.
* Black harpoons for the killer whales. |

I would agree with Plphoto ont this one. It seems to basically to be a song about the rebirth of AIC and a "fuck you" to the nay sayers of the album. Beautiful song that is definately a high point of the album. |

Definately a song with a balsey message. Though the album as a whole seems to be a staley tribute, i find this song expresses the bands dissapointment in Layne and the mistakes that he made leading to his abandonment. |

This song seems as though it could have been inspired by "Crime and Punishment". Raskolnikov creeps up to the door of the pawnbroker and is refused entrance. After he has killed he can't control his actions and is definately not in his right mind. His life is self absorbed, and in such a desperate time his murder made sense. Most likely not AIC's intention, but to me it fits perfectly. |

| Jerry Cantrell – Chemical Tribe Lyrics
|
The more i listen to this song the more i think it could be a reference to John Steinbecks 'East of Eden'. "Generation turned to chemical tribe", every persons genetics supposedly traces back to Cain becuase he populated the earth, so chemically were all siblings and we're naturally eveil. (in theory).
"No last supper right
Bitchslapped 'fore you reached the table
Born in ending times
Leaning more toward Cain than Abel" 1st of all whoever transcribed these lyrics misspelled the word "right", but i digress. This quote may be a parallel the story of Cain and Abel, and is aimed at the Cains of the world whose sacrifices are not accepted and are chosen second to Cain. I suppose none of this could have been Jerry Cantrell's intention, but i think 'East of Eden' applies to the song fatastically. In any case i like the song a lot and as well as most songs, "chemical tribe" probably varies interpretively.

| Down – Beneath the Tides Lyrics

I agree, this does seem to pertain mostly to that. Altough i do also think that this has to do analyzing the interior things, "beneath the tides", "chasing the tucked tail" trying to look under the exterior and finding the things that are hidden. "playing russian roulette with a full chamber", i could be wrong but i think that is referring to living in NO, a city hundreds of feet below sea level right on the coast, danger was inevitable. Anyway theres a lot of symbolism in this song, and thats my take on it. |

| Down – Stone The Crow Lyrics

|
I've come to a conclusion (although it could be flawed because this is from '95) that this song is about how people gave Phil a bad rep and blamed him for what at that point was just the eroding of Pantera. "Stone the Crow" means to dislike the crows simply because they're big, black, ugly, birds. Phil feels he is being condemned by people who have formed decisons based on what they have seen or heard, but not by what they have expirienced first hand. Perhaps this is not what down intended for this song to be interpreted as, but even if it's not i still think it fits. In any case this thought applies to the time after Dime died as opposed to when it was written & released. |

Yeah, I agree with the first two cholos. It seems pretty self explanitary. I also think that the name of the song could have been an intentional oxy moron. Pillars are man made and therefore won't last forever, they're mortal which is an opposite of eternity. Even after everything is gone, time will exist and eternity will go on. This along with the corrosion of the planet i think are the message, ...but i don't know if i really got into phil's head. |

This song could be interpreted as being from the point of view of somone who has somthing they have to do, but are unaware of how to do it. The 2nd verse seems to about getting older and going through stages of life. "Staring right back at myself", looking back at different points in your life and seeing what you did right and what you did wrong. Those are my thoughts. |

| Corrosion Of Conformity – Echoes In The Well Lyrics

This song could be about the decreasing amount of oil at our disposal, the "wells" being the oil rigs which only fin emptiness, hence the echoes, ...although that is kind of a long shot, especially becuase this song was released in '91. It could just be about problems which exist through out the world which are more convenient to ignore and therefore the are by most. "Listen To The Battle Cries Of A Race That Knows It's Dying" , species are becoming extinct and so will humans if ghosts like global warming exist. whether these ideas reflect my opinions aside, thats what i believe this song is about. |

| Corrosion Of Conformity – Dance Of The Dead Lyrics

|
I think that this song can be partially explained just by the name of the band. It's about using your brain for whatever it might be to find the answers you need to know. Obviously this probably makes some kind of reference to the government and the economic flaws which exist, but i'd like to think that it's deeper than that. "The Dance of The Dead" are/is the actions that people make who act without question, if we don't use our minds to our full potential and just do things becuase thats the way they are, then we ARE dead.

in response to "Jayrock", .uhhh, i'm not sure what lyrics you were reading but there isn't even really one line that could be pertaining to do with James (thats how you spell James) childhood. Its just about Cthuluh, theres no second meaning, it's in the style of an epic so there is not metaphor. |

thats not fuckign funny. Blackened truly said what needed to be said, i agree with most of what he said becuase it is true. He came off as intelligent, well spoken and he clearly knew what he was talking about. but I Am Drugs, has showed his immaturety by simply choosing the name that he chose. Apparently you have an extremely poor judge of character since you decided to take the side of a drug user over an undeniably competent person, and as far as your joke about him being touched as a child is sick and makes me incapable of ever gaining any respect for you.
incedentally i love the song. |

I couldn't possibly agree with you more, this is a great song which was written beautifully, but yeah i think the message in this song is a bit too one sideded. Being overbearing on either side of a conflict is rarely the correct position to have. |

| Machine Head – A Farewell To Arms Lyrics
| 17 years ago

Well since it's been failed to have been mentioned so far, it should be acknowledged that the song is based off of the book "A Fairwell To Arms" by Ernest Hemmingway. The Song uses symbols from the book and is basically about the sacrifices of war and questioning if they are worth what in turn becomes lost.
Hemmingway's books seem to have a great effect on songwriters since this is his third novel to be converted into a song (the first two being "For Whom The Bell Tolls" & "The Thing That Should Not Be")
I really enjoy this song and it is definately one of my favorites on the album and it is a great way to end a nearly perfect record. Hopefully they'll play this song when i see them in January. |

| Alice in Chains – Shame In You Lyrics

This is a fantastic song, it got me into the rest of this album. What i've gathered from listening to this song is that it's about being critized by society though it's flaws are no less shameful then your own. It could be about the way that Layne thought he was viewed by a lot of the world, but the meaning doesen't need to be that precise. If you think the song parallels the character of a relationship thats accurate too. Both Layne and Jerry stressed to not argue about the meanings of their songs and that what ever you thought they were about were what they were about, i think this song is a perfect example where their suggestion should be taken. |

This is definately ABSOLUTELY in my top 3 favorite Alice in Chains songs. The Chorus probably has my favorite vocals harmonies of all time. I agree with how its about being falsley judged , i also think its about leaching off of another persons popularity, and that if you like someone and you care about someone who was less popular than you. Would you still love them if it meant you would lose your other friends as well as your image? |

The first instrumental written without Cliff. Somtimes the instrumentals are the best on the album, for this song that is arguably true. I like this song a lot and it contains some of the elements from To live is to Die and Orion. I'm so happy that Metallica decided to resurect an old tradition. |

The song is most likely about being betrayed. And how jesus knew that inevitabley he would be betrayed by Judas, whether Judas knew yet or not. It also seems that in some places the story is told from the betrayers point of view and how Judas felt after he sold Jesus out and killed himself as repent. This is a great song and is one of the best on the album. Death Magnetic is a classic, the best thing Metallica's made as a whole since Master of Puppets. |

| Metallica – All Nightmare Long Lyrics

|
Personally this could be my favorite song on Death Magnetic.
I think that first verse is about Metallica themselves at their darkest hour, 1. When Cliff Died, 2. When James struggled with addiction, 3. The failure of St. Anger and the loss of many fans through out the years.
As a whole i think the song is about the thing that you fear the most and how you're unable to escape it until you aren't afraid of it anymore. When you're dreaming a Nightmare IS real. |
