Kele Okereke – Meet Me In The Middle Lyrics 14 years ago
And it wasn't a light in a tunnel,
it was a flame
I've been going blind to the signs once again
Darling, Don't be so rough
Darling, I'm still here for you,
Darling, I've still got your back

We started on the left
but we somehow ended on the right
You thought that you owned me
I thought that you owed me.
We started facing East
but we somehow ended facing West
Slipping through our fingers
won't you fight for me.

This is really gonna work
if we Meet in the middle (x4)

You tell me I'm naive
but at least i'm still alive
I'm not scared of winter
I'm not scared of looking up
You tell me i'm naive
and these ??? won't pay the rent
silently in separate rooms
won't you come back to me?

Wasteful, analytical, twenty-something scared of love
Unfold, unfold those tatooed arms
come over here and open up

This is only gonna work
if we Meet in the middle (x4)

I'm looking over you
I've still got your back

This is only gonna work
if we Meet in the middle
(I've still got your back)
This is only gonna work
if we Meet in the middle
(I've still got your back)

I like to think this is a song about bloc party but some lines dont go with that... nice to think so tho

To me it translates as:

Get off your ass and do something with your life that you want to do instead of just getting by.

The meanign i get from it is:

Someone her has known for a long time has got hooked on drugs (prob cocaine as nose is bleeding). He wants that person back the way they were but it isnt happening.

He trying his best to help but with no luck.

Seems to me this song simply put is about a guy who thinks he is the perfect guy for this girl.

He thinks he is the hero she is looking for.

certainly dont think the whole song is about raving but quite possibly that block:

manmade disaster - could be chemical drugs
supermen and mitsy turbos - chemical drugs
twos on that - reefa
speed strength etc - how you feel on drugs

All a big part of the the late 90s club/rave scene in england. i know i went to a few raves in 98 and a few house parties after, being the same age as kele, he could have too which could explain his references to it

but as a whole... have no idea what this song is about and could be waaaay off!!!

would love to find somewhere with somekind of official breakdown from the band as to what each song means....

I know he has said a few times before playing a song live what the song is about... but only ever heard that for banquet (sex for the first time) and compliments (work - a fan video on you tube to this song hits the nail right on the head i think)

Just realised too... the line is

'Spark it... gimmi two's on that'

The more i hear it this song is about the sort of drug/club era of the late 90s...

Supermen and Mitsi Turbos (mitsibishi turbo)... 'e' pills

The line is 'Supermen and Mitzy Turbos'

These were two popular names of 'E' or ecstasy pills that were taken in the big sort of clubbing era in the UK around 1998 (could be a connection as he mentions that year at the end of the song). Appropriate as he goes on to describe what it might be like on a drug of this type. Another social group in england at that time were 'rude boys' (now chavs) that all wore sports branded gear like he described, and they were prolly the group that mostly were opposite to the loved up clubbers of the era.

Could be something else in that he says 'spark him... gimmi twos on that' later in the song which is referring to smoking reefa (if someone lights a doobie you says twos on that and it means you go next).

Hope some of this helps other bloc party fans!!!!

Also just noticed the second lline on the second block could be keep the 'past and future out' (living for the moment in clubland)

Could it be that Kele was a bit of a raver back in the late 90s.... could explain the electro beats of some of the latest songs??

Adam
